ABSTRACT
This book is a study, the perspective of which, is performed for the
first time in Albania and it is focused on monitoring, measurement and
analysis of communication of prisoners in the prison system. The key
word of the study will be 'communication in prison', and there will be
considered everything which is related to or that follows this process.
So, in this case, we do not study communication in normal conditions, in
conditions of freedom, but in exceptional circumstances, in «extreme»
circumstances. Human communication is broken so violently and
suddenly of liberty, of society in general and family in particular. The
termination of these natural social contacts, as well as the strain to
establish other forced contacts because of circumstances, is followed by
specific traits and behavioural characteristics.
Communication in total institutions of punishment is a form of
internal communication, a form of communication within the agency,
within the organization. But in the case of institutions of punishment, it
has its own, quite important characteristics. Traditionally, punishment
systems are regarded as static and hierarchical organizations. They get
their static character because their objectives are clear and unchanging;
prisons exist to execute a court decision that removes freedom of a
person convicted of a particular crime. While, the hierarchical character
is related to their top-down way of function, according to which, orders
given by a high level, are just implemented by the representatives of
the lower level. Not mentioning the prisoners, who must obey orders
of the staff without discussing them. This organizational structure is
justified with the main objective of prison, that is, to isolate the culprit,
to prevent the inmate to escape.
One of the specific reasons of this is that the status of those who
communicate is not equal. Even in everyday life, often happens we

communicate
with someone with whom we do not share the same
status. Power is always present when we communicate with each other,
even though it is not always obvious or evident. But, in the case of
institutions of punishment, the communicators' status is not equal in
their fundamental rights: in the penitentiary institutions; one party is
punished, monitored; while the other party is the one that is observing.
In this isolated environment, one party is the convicted and the other is
the one that exercises the right to execute the sentence. In this rapport,
the party exercising the right of execution of sentence demonstrates
power as a mechanism for obedience or as fear of punishment.
