RESUME
The study “Luan Starova’s Balcanic Saga - hermeneutic
reading” is comprehensive and has just opened parentheses of
serious research on this interesting work, which will deal with
its specific aspects and issues that will always remain open. It is
focused on the portrait of the author and on the expected work
that was highly rated by local and international criticism as a
literary text different from our traditional novel, as an unusual
work for many reasons, ranging from its wider praises and po-
pularity in other countries than within Albanian cultural realm,
the type/kind of novel ( Balcanic Saga is a river/serial novel.);
the thematic and radiation of human ideas/messages; characte-
ristic ethnicism and supranational spirit of the work; the way
of interweaving the documentary with imaginary and literary

and non-literary genres and discourses; the use of contempo-
rary narrative techniques and up to new feeds which come as a
result of Luan Starova’s literary environment and formation, of
one of the erudite authors of Albanian and Balcanic literature,
who is considered one of the most translated and respected Al-
banian authors on the international scene, after Ismail Kadare.
About Balcanic Saga many appraisals were said by distin-
guished scholars from East and West, as Adonis, Nedim Gür-
sel, Edgar Moren, Erik Faj, Alain Bosquet, Peter Rau, Vasili
Vasilikos, Alexis Lorca, Gerald Antonie, Predrag Matvejevic,
Nikola Kovac, Jorgo Bullo, Ali Aliu, Ardian Marashi, Luan
Topçiu, Ali Podrimja, Xhevat Lloshi, Gane Torodovski, Geor-
gi Stardellovi, Mateja Matevski. It is now acclaimed litera-
ry work which has given to the author an immortal name in
contemporary Albanian and European literature.
Indeed, Luan Starova became popular even writing other
literary genres (poetry, essays, reportages, travelogues, criti-
cism and literary studies, translations.but he reached the
pantheon of aesthetic values with novels: “Librat e Babait”
(Father’s Books, 1992), “Koha e dhive” (Time of the Goats,
1993), “Çelesi ballkanik” (Balcanic Key,1994), ”Muzeu ateist”
(Atheist Museum, 1997), “Dheu i mbjellur” (Planted Soil,
1998), “Udha e ngjalave” (Way of the Eels, 2000),
prej hiri” (Ashen Castle, 2002), “Erveheja” (2005), “Dashuria
e gjeneralit”(General’s Love, 2008), “Ne kerkim te Helen Lejbo-
vicit” (In Search of Helen Leibovic, 2008), “Ambasadat” (Em-
bassies, 2008), “Ambasadat e reja” (New Embassies, 2011).,
all of them written in these twenty last years.
The narrative prose that Luan Starova writes is serial no-

vel/cliffhanger, with dual status, which makes the works at
the same time simultaneous and autonomous and part of no-
vels entirety with common title: Balcanic Saga. As the project
is close to the corpus of Balzac’s novels ֊ a truly Balkan dra-
ma with the fate of the father as a leading character and his
asylum seeker family in the center, a very allusive fate within
which is involved the existence of humanity often found in
historical whirlpools and swirls.
The criticism has called this work in question as so-
mething special, atypical and non-categorical, so as such it
is difficult to frame it and to label it as a single type of no-
vel. But, despite the fact that it can stand comfortably within
the frame of historical, political, essayistic, philosophical, pi-
caresque, family novel, character’s novel., it suits him best
in the genre of autobiographical/auto-fictional type of novel,
known for the lack of immunity toward the hybridization
and migration of discourses of various sensations which are
melted and integrated, fictionalized and literalized until com-
plete conversion in literary reality.
Through coexistence of real with fantasy, documentary
with imaginary, human with mythical, traditional myths with
literary myths, metaphorical language, allusive and suggestive
with common language and without excessive adornments,
accessible and conveniently for ail kind of potential readers,
Luan Starova successfully manages to bring to literary world
the work which according to many renowned scholars repre-
sents better than other text the Balkan spirit, ambiguous sen-
sations of peninsula where ways of two different worlds are in-
tersected, most often incompatible: the East and the West, of

the Orient and Occident, Islam and Christianity. He makes
this with the language of understanding, tolerance and huma-
nism, with the most sympathetic and available concept for the
other and his values, thus offering to the suspicious public of
Europe, not the Balkans of hatred and fratricidal battles, but
the Balkan of understanding and tolerance from which the
public has a lot to learn.
Luan Starova is characterized by deep inner insight that
he has about social phenomena. He moves freely between the
truth and fiction by transfiguring the real life into literature
and without caring at all, as would Zija Cela say, about those
who are inclined to identify the jacket with the sheep that gave
the wool as raw material for fibers turned into stuff. The author
avoids the extreme naturalism and he is not prisoner of Zo-
laesque schemes and concepts. His confessions are reliable,
but always increasingly based on literary premises. He knows
quite well that real events cannot be more real than imagined
events, so he literalizes them in his novels.
Balcanic Saga is cycle of novels, narrated with inborn
calmness and a refined irony. Now it has become an important
work for European profiling of Albanian culture and literature,
it is an open book with expanding opportunities, evidence of
our creative genius, who successfully transforms into literary
page the individual drama in general human drama, which
convincingly evokes comedian system of successive tragedy,
like the fate of the main character, in whose life resides the
author’s life itself.
Centred theme of the Balcanic Saga is a century-old his-
tory of an Albanian family seeking asylum, problems of exis-
tence and identity and of a man trapped in open road facing
the oppressive government machinery, which carries overall
violence in trying to ensure its longevity. In such circums-
tances the main character of novels ֊ the father, this intellec-
tual with all possible levels of education completed in the East
and in the West, cannot do anything else but to get back to
the various books of his library, to seek ways of exit and rescue
this asylum seekers family from Balkan labyrinth, to project
utopian return through readings and sorting the books un-
der a rule known only to him, then proceeded as Don Quixo-
tesque and Sisyphean project by his son, author, narrator and
character.
Luan Starovas novels are in constant relations with the
history that is suggested and felt strongly through allusions
and allegories. The tool for exposing tragic truths is not res-
trictive mythology but global metaphors as an alternative of
discontinuities, with the help of which more easily penetrates
the diagonal through a centuries-old period of family life. Me-
taphors in words he found in his mothers mirror and keys,
in his father’s library and books, in time of goats, eels track,
atheist museum, labyrinths, the Janissaries, in order of books
as mobile code, in the relief of ash through pages of the books
read by his father, which represented the main characters
hope of finding the ways of salvation from the vicious circle,
in the background of family archetypes structured in author’s
subconscience, in the archeology of the soul of the family and
in the world of ideas collected in father’s books, through which
the author creates the relations of communications with rea-
ders of all categories and meridians of the world. Such is the

metaphor of a library - of this Borgesian heaven reserved for
selected souls, the metaphor of books as possible and virtual
reality, or the metaphor of goats as personification of a philo-
sophical fable that belies the totalitarianism of Stalin’s style.
The makings of Luan Starova’s novels are made of various
materials. There we have feeds from all kinds, ranging from
rich folklore of his abandoned birthplace, from models that
represent the best tradition of Albanian and Yugoslav novel
up to those of French and European literature. Understan-
dably, then the content of the novel is developed relying on
the talent and craftsmanship of erudite writer, and he knows
how to give colors of the spirit to the things, without exagge-
ration and without turning the stories into simple things with
factographic data. On the contrary: he, events and key cha-
racters, carries through the creative laboratory and complex
process of literalization and fictionalization, from which even
he cannot spare himself.
As for formatting the characters, Luan Starova has captured
the essence of the fate of heroes facing the cog in the machinery
of power and in mercy of uncountable rulers that are in charge of
depersonalization of human beings. This is why the heroes of the
Saga are gripped by a kind of permanent fear and anxiety and why
they are obsessed by existence and escapement from the curse,
which in the case of the Balkans it has physiognomy of syndrome.
Perhaps for the same reason, in the novels we encounter charac-
ters who speak silently and keep within them many secretes, as
is the case with the father and mother, in whose side the author
with his open imagination easily forges various characters and
fates, then puts them in appropriate situations.
In Balcanic Saga we find the phenomena of characters
with initials, as at Kafka’s heroes or at any other literary au-
thority, Even there are no names of main characters (fathers
and mother name) and a description of their physical image,
which without any doubts gives them the mythical status - ti-
meless and omnipresent. Wrapping the characters with mys-
tery of the untold enables the reader to take part actively in
redesigning the events and typization of characters. Such is
the case with father, the main character, from whom Starova
has carved spontaneously and without any strains the proto-
type of the intellectual withdrawn in intimate world of books,
the intellectual who breaks the passivity with only one action
which manifests spreading/planting of silence to others, the
hope for finding the path to escapement and salvation.
The prose of Luan Starovas novels is open and has a mee-
ting point with many popular works. Scholars of the Saga have
mentioned in this context many distinguished authors of Euro-
pean and World literature, from the great Albanian and Balkan
authors as: Faik Konica, Jeronim de Rada, Sami Frasheri, Pash-
ko Vasa, Ismail Kadare, Danilo Kis, Mesa Selimovic, Nikos Ka-
zanzakisi, Vasilis Vasilikosi, Borislav Pekic, Milosh Crnjanski.
up: Miguel de Cervantes, Nikolai Gogol, Franc Kafka, Albert
Camus, Michel Montaigne, Marcel Proust, Paul Éluard, Sté-
phane Mallarmé, Emil Cioran, Edgar Moren, Gunther Grass,
Thomas Mann, Milan Kundera, Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
Starova is called the master of modern narrative, or of
combination of previous and contemporary models. His no-
vels are unique because of the way they are structured, with
wavy narrative surface, with pieces of digression containing

images of various patches and cloths that remind you of old-
time syncretism/coexistence of many arts in a single art. The
author brings as a model of literary writing, the diverse struc-
ture of confession, rich with subtext, which suggests more
than explains. The simple style absorbs readers of all catego-
ries, of course, not all of them manage to reach invisible layers
of text, on the subterranean side of literature.
Discourses and different systems of thinking (essayistic,
philosophical, symbolic .), harmonically integrated in es-
sence of novels, the confession of discontinuity type, devia-
tion from linear fabulous line, intertextual layers of associate
narration, rhythm/dynamic pace of narration, duplication of
heroes, a multiplicity of independent and autonomous voices,
representation of specific philosophies of promethean cha-
racters and aspirants of free thought, the author’s aesthetic
opinion, incompatible with the type of traditional novel that
has object characters., are elements which makes Luan Sta-
rova’s Albanian and Balcanic Saga a special polyphonic work.
Somewhere in this study we said that Tuan Starova’s novel
work has not yet experienced the deserved reception among
its natural public, among Albanian public, because the author
■writes in parallel in three languages: in Albanian, Macedonian
and French. However, despite all the drawbacks which he conti-
nues to face, Luan Starava is the first novelist among Albanian
■writers in Macedonia who seriously withdraws attention of the
audience of Albanian culture and literature. His introduction in
literature at the time when in Balkans no one cared about books
and remaining in the great scene of literary art, especially the
assessment of the work as unique and atypical is something
marvelous that can happen to the most talented artists of today.
