Cain is the romantic outsider, presenting his se¬
ductive argument to the population of Babel,
both thrilled and repelled by the dangerous celeb¬
rity in their midst. Using his considerable powers
of language, Cain, the eloquent one, the one who
names (and who must continue to give expres¬
sion to all he feels of love and hate long after he
has committed his crime}, fashions a compelling
justification of the first fratricide. Throughout
the novel, Cain argues with Abel, with rumor,
with Qod, and with the very idea of Creation itself,
wielding a lethal logic that is convincing and
provocative.
A miraculous novel about language, it also con¬
veys brilliantly the intensity of archetypal emo¬
tions: a capricious Qod is Jealous of Eve s dalliance
with one of Mis angels; Adam displays a sullen
