Veliki Pijesak
( The Great Sand ) was loca¬
ted by the one of most important Roman com
munication routes through the Province of
Pre¬
vališ,
which connected
Salona, Narona
Acruvi-
um, Vicinum,
Budva,
Skadar, and further on,
Drach
[Durrës]
and Via Egnatia. This road fol¬
lowed present day old Bar
-
Ulcinj route, which
passes through Mrkojevici and
Anamale
and
emerges up at the contemporary Albanian bor¬
der. In the medieval age, the same communi¬
cation routes were used, connecting Bishopric
towns of Bar, Svac and Ulcinj, and further on,
Danj, Sard, Pilot and Rosaf (Skadar). This was a
traders road, and certainly was used in the mi¬
litary expeditions (e.g. John Kursily s campaign
from Drach against Doclean [Diocleian] Prince
Stefan
Vojislav in 1042;
also, Stefan Nemanja s
direction of movement during his liberation of
the Coastal towns from the Byzantium.)
Based on these reasons, it is hard to dispro¬
ve the opinion that the early Christian teachers,
dating back to the time of the Apostles, had pas¬
sed through these regions; therefore, we learn
about their very early presence within the towns
and
Latifundia
[spacious estates] throughout
the coast of
Prevališ [Preavalitana].
Prior to the
Edict of Milan, certainly while still in secrecy,
and later on in this land prepared for centuri¬
es
-
the Bishoprics were founded, as well at a
later date the Metropolitan Sees. Hence, in the
III century
A.D.,
perhaps even earlier, Christian
missionaries, after laying down a foundation of
Salona s ecclesial
community, did not forsake
the places east of
Salona.
This supposition agre¬
es with a series of facts. The first one is that ever
since its foundation,
Prevališ
was alternately lo¬
cated in three dioceses (under the rule of Pre-
fectus
pretorio Illyrici
Orientalis), in
which the
ecclesial communities were organized prior to
the ones in
Salona.
In
392 A.D.
in Skadar, the
center of the precinct, two Bishops were men¬
tioned, Basus and Snecius, (Kovachevic
1967:
225),
indicating that the ecclesial community in
Prevališ
was already expanded, Veliki
Pijesak
stands in evidence.
The general impression is that in the III cen¬
tury
A.D.
the Christian community raised a ho¬
me here for its rituals, and on its remains, two
churches were built and reconstructed several
times. The remains of the other ancient Chri¬
stian church were recognized in the reconnais¬
sance of
1978,
only about hundred meters away
from the archeological site, confirming that in
the period from IV-VI centuries
A.D.,
there exi¬
sted a well organized Christian life in this cove.
Based on the available archeological da¬
ta, we can not determine whether the churches
existed within a settlement or this was a mat¬
ter of isolated entities which were in proximity
to the monastery contained within a spacious
ecclesial property. Nevertheless, important data
discovered on the ancient Christian site of Veli¬
ki
Pijesak
will set off a new chapter in the study
of the origin of Christianity in this region.
