In the Orbit of Integral Nationalism: Active Nationalism by
Dmytro Dontsov Versus The Modern Thought of Roman Dmowski

A Comparative Study
This study is an attempt to present the views and theoretical basis behind the ideology
and thought promoted by integral nationalists in two neighbouring nations, i.e. the Ukrain¬
ian and the Polish. With a view to conducting an in-depth analysis, the scope of this study
was focussed on the most characteristic concepts of two authors, constituting the refer¬
ence point for the followers of integral nationalism in the nations concerned. As regards
Ukrainian nationalism, Dmytro Dontsov
(1883-1973)
was undoubtedly the most renowned
promoter, whereas Roman Dmowski enjoyed most respect among Polish nationalists. In
this study, Dmowski s ideology was used as the background and the point of reference for
Dontsovs views, which have rarely been the focus of examination, and remain relatively
unknown. The aim was not to leverage the position of both ideologists but to investigate
their views and arguments, on the basis of a comparative analysis of the source materials
available. Such an approach resulted from the intention to identify the correlations, similari¬
ties and differences between the integral nationalists acting in the two neighbouring nations.
Roman Dmowski
(1864-1939)
was born in
Kamionek
(within todays city limits of
Warsaw), but his predecessors came from the Podlachia gentry. He pursued his early edu¬
cation in Warsaw, which is also where he later studied natural sciences. As a student, he
became active in politics but he was soon imprisoned and sentenced to exile. While serving
the sentence, he escaped from Russia to
Lwów
which at that time belonged to Austria-
Hungary. From then on, he was fully devoted to politics, becoming one of the leading figures
in Polish nationalism. By the end of the First World War, he launched a wide diplomatic
campaign and represented Poland at the Paris Peace Conference, actively engaging in the
fight for its borders. However, in the rebuilt country he did not fulfil any leading functions
(except for a few-week-long period of heading the Ministry of Foreign Affairs), yet he was
treated as a spiritual leader of the National-Democratic Party
( Endecja ).
He released many
publications, all meeting with wide social response. He died just before the German Nazis
invaded Poland.
Dmytro Dontsov was also born in the

empire reigned over by the Romanov
Dynasty. His place of birth was Melitopol, located in the todays Zaporizhia
Oblast
in

Ukraine, but his father came from the Voronezh Governorate, situated in the historic land
known as
Sloboda
Ukraine. As a child, he lost his parents, but the inheritance they left
behind allowed him to complete education and pursue law studies at the University of
Petersburg. In the course of his studies, he was arrested twice for his political activities. In
fear of exile, he fled to Austria-Hungary
-
as Dmowski had done twelve years before
-
and
he eventually settled down in
Lwów.
Before the First World War Dontsov belonged to the
Socialist movement, but at its outset his values began to gravitate towards nationalism. In
the inter-War period, he conducted publishing activity but, contrary to the previous years of
his political career, he avoided any connections with political organisations. This was when
he became known as the ideologist of Ukrainian nationalism and the founder of active
nationalism . After the Second World War, Dontsov emigrated to Canada. Although his
publishing activity continued, his post-War works never became as popular as the earlier
counterparts.
This study comprises eleven chapters that focus on various issues, which range from
comparing the biographies and political careers of the ideologists involved, from analys¬
ing selected elements of their political thought, to identifying the major assumptions and
values emphasised in the compared ideologies. The author aimed at identifying various
areas the examination of which could bring us closer to understanding the process of the
development of the integral nationalist movements in Central and Eastern Europe. An
attempt was also made to show the correlations between the biographies and careers of the
ideologists in question, along with selected elements of their political thought and ideologi¬
cal assumptions.
The general chronological framework for this study was set by the dates of birth and
death of Roman Dmowski and Dmytro Dontsov. As regards their political thought and
doctrinal assumptions, their time-span was limited to the period when both ideologists
were active developers of the nationalist trend, which in effect corresponded to the fifty
years preceding the outbreak of the Second World War. The study recognised the fact that,
although Dmowski
s
entire period of activity was devoted to the shaping of nationalist ideas,
which had a tangible impact on their followers, his thought was subject to evolution. The
breaking point fell at the end of the First World War, which was also when Dontsov s ideo¬
logical
reorientation
began, followed by his changing from the socialist into the nationalist
community.
The sources used in this study included a wide array of diverse works by the ideologists
concerned. Reference was also made to their private letters, as well as to the recollections of
and relations of other people. Furthermore, wide archival research was conducted, which
provided access to many unique documents stored in the domestic and foreign archives.
Finally, use was made of numerous press materials and scientific literature on the subject
in question.
The comparative studies of Dmytro Dontsov s active nationalism by and the political
thought of Roman Dmowski have confirmed that active nationalism was under some influ¬
ence from the Polish national-democratic movement, though it was obviously not intended

to derive from its ideas. No impact was observed the other way round. Furthermore, even
by merely glossing over the biographies of both ideologists and comparing their activities, it
can be inferred that, in the political field, Dontsov hardly matched up to Dmowski. As com¬
pared to the latter, the former could be considered a mediocre politician. This difference,
however, should not obscure the fact that they both were, and still are, viewed as the most
prominent co-founders of a radical nationalist ideology within their respective nations. The
contrast between them gets smaller in the publishing field. While Dmowski s works were
closely connected with, and perceived through, his political activity, Dontsov
s
interests were
more focussed on ideas, ideological discourse and literary criticism. The analysis of both
approaches allows us to capture many similar aspects. When redefining certain concepts,
both ideologists referred to the arguments commonly used by nationalists, often deriving
their views from the thoughts expressed by representatives of various epochs, trends and
fields, including other mainstream followers.
The nations described by Dmytro Dontsov and Roman Dmowski were presented as
living bodies, which were only alive when fighting and remaining active. Nationalisms
embodying these nations were presented as an original collection of ideas, reflecting the
desires of the nations soul . Dontsov and Dmowski related to the same values. Paradoxi¬
cally, they both considered themselves representatives of western civilisation, at the same
time opposing its values, such as democracy, parliamentarism, liberalism and humanism.
In this context, the active nationalism propounded by Dontsov and the political thought of
Dmowski exhibit many similarities, though their life paths did not cross and were broadly
set in various periods. The character of their nationalist visions depended on many factors,
including especially the internal structure of the community represented, and its political,
economic and cultural
Ufe.
Integral nationalism can be wrongly considered a thing of the past that is morally dis¬
missed by any society based on the ideas of European civilisation. In fact, these two ideolo¬
gists (and their concepts), in the main period of their careers, were very much aware of the
considerable social support for the trend which they represented. At some point, national¬
ism became widely accepted, and even nowadays it has a prominent role in public discourse.
For this reason, the challenge of investigating its workings, social impact and consequences
still appears extremely relevant.
