PRACTICES AND INTEGRATION
OF THE BLIND IN BULGARIA
(Summary)
This book is dedicated to the friends. The main characters are blind, with
whom lives the author met long time ago. The book represents a combination of
alive until present days communication with blind acquaintances and the research
interest of
folklorist
and ethnologist. Writing recreates the pursuit of mutual un¬
derstanding, dialogue, public utility. Tracked are the basic elements of the chain
of difficulties that sightless people have to overcome to find a respectable place in
society. The consideration of cultural practices and achievements of people with
visual impairment purposes highlighting their potential and benefits for the society
of their realization.
The book is the first of its kind in Bulgaria comprehensive systematic study on
the culture of the blind people and the current problems of their social integration. In
Bulgarian science lacks a comprehensive study of the blind's community, the litera¬
ture of which is dominated by representatives of its union movement, and concerns
social, psychological or educational problems, whereas to cultural practices of the
blind are devoted only a couple of popular articles in their specialized periodicals.
This monograph is the first attempt in the research of disadvantaged communi¬
ties through the optics of Bulgarian folklore and ethnology. The main research focus
is on aspects of mutual understanding and integration of the blind into Bulgarian
society by highlighting cultural needs and mechanisms of their role in community's
self-expression. Entering the field of cultural events, system performance analysis
reveals potential opportunities of these people
-

some stereotypical attitudes and formation of public opinion and adequate attitude.
The book is based primarily on personal research

interviews and drawing on
data from published sources to interpret each section. The word is given mostly to
people from the studied community. Included are interviews with blind people of
different ages, social, educational, professional status (students, singers, musicians,
scientists, workes, etc.). In some places an outside view of people who are away from
the research community stands out. The main source

for the developed
issues are printed over the years (from early
60s
up to today) on the pages of journal
"Zari"

appearing a body of the Union of the Blind in Bulgaria.
The study is based on personal fund created from field documents (video, audio,
photo) illustrating the
socio-cultural
life of blind people. Included are interviews and
observations of a number of community representatives from the three largest cities
in Bulgaria
-
Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna, wherein the main organizations of the blind
are situated. The first field recordings were made in
2004
with the support of the
donation program FORD under the "Documentation and preservation of folklore.

National Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage at the Institute of Ethnology and
Folklore Studies with Ethnographic Museum at
BAS.
In the book are traced the cultural practices on blind in the past and today

from
the creation of National Institute for the Blind in Sofia, on the initiative of the emi¬
nent scholar and politician Prof. Ivan Shishmanov, through the amateur art widely
spread in socialism
-
to contemporary expressions of blind artists and contractors in
the field of copyright and amateur art. Disclosure of cultural practices and achieve¬
ments of persons deprived of sight, and identification of difficulties and obstacles
to their social integration, help for promoting stable positive social effects. Systems
analysis and included personal interviews conducted by the author showed that the
lack of vision does not correlate with the underlying gifts in the individual. Undoubt¬
edly, the blind people appear full citizens, whose potential
