The Library of the Cistercian Monastery
in
Henryków
until the late 15TH century
Until now, the library of the Cistercian monastery of
Henryków
has not been
the object of comprehensive research. Out of the
Henryków
manuscripts which
were secured in
1810
by
Johann
Gustav Büsching 107
manuscript units in
116
volumes and
40
incunabula stored in the Department of Manuscripts and the
Department of Old Prints of the University Library in
Wrocław
were preserved
till the present day.
Before the research activities were undertaken
11
manuscripts and
16
incun¬
abula were excluded from this collection because it is certain that they did not
belong to the library of the monastery during the Middle Ages. The remaining
96
manuscript units in
105
volumes and
26
incunabula may be considered, with
lesser or greater certitude, to have been a part of the medieval stock of the monas¬
tic library and that they are the proper object of the source analysis of the present
work. The
Księga henrykowska
(the Book of
Henryków)
is also included in the
collection that was researched. This work is currently stored in the Archdiocesan
Archives in
Wrocław.
The aim of this monograph is to present as many aspects of the library as pos¬
sible. Due to the scanty number of sources some issues, such as the history of the
library, could be described merely in a rough outline. Because of the lack of cata¬
logues and inventories from
Henryków
any attempt at tracing the history of the
growing monastic library and presenting the principles of its organisation faces
similar challenges. Because of the aforementioned reasons the work concentrates
above all upon the description of the external features of the books, such as the
illuminations, binding, writing materials, and upon the detailed description and
analysis of the content structure of the collection.
The chronological span of the work ranges from the beginnings of the existence
of the collection until the end of the 15th century. The origins of the book collec¬
tion may be traced back to the time when the monastery in
Henryków
acquired

the first books from its maternal establishment in
Lubiąż
when the abbey was
founded in the first half of the 13th century. Therefore, this period is considered
to be the beginning of the library. The second half of the 15th century is the time
when the number of manuscripts decreased in favour of the first printed books
-
incunabula which were still very similar in form to the manuscript codices.
The text was divided into three chapters. The first chapter is further divided
into four sub-chapters which are preliminary. It is opened by The current state of
research upon the
Henryków
library which is an in-depth discussion of the litera¬
ture concerning the
Henryków
library as a whole and the respective books. The
second sub-chapter discusses the Cistercian legislation and the attitude of the
Cistercians towards books. The next sub-chapter presents the medieval Cister¬
cian libraries. For obvious reasons this sub-chapter cannot be treated as a source,
but it was written on the basis of the existing literature on the subject. The last
sub-chapter presents an overview of the history of the
Henryków
abbey and its
library until the dissolution of the monastery in the 19th century.
The second chapter, The description of the library from the perspective of the
growing number of books and the time of origin, provenance and external features
of the books and the third chapter, The content of the manuscripts and the incun¬
abula constitute the bulk of the present work which is based on a comprehensive
analysis of the medieval book collection. The chapter The description of the library
from the perspective of... is divided into four parts. The first part describes the size
and the development of the library during a few centuries of its existence (from the
13th to the 15th century). The manuscripts and incunabula were categorised into
three groups according to their provenance. The first category comprises the man¬
uscripts which the monastery presumably acquired from the
Lubiąż
abbey; the
second category comprises the manuscripts which were made in the
Henryków
scriptorium; the third category comprises the imported codices, i.e. those that
were made outside Silesia, works re-written in other Silesian scriptoria and incun¬
abula. With reference to the books which belong to the latter category the question
of the origins of the development of the library collection was discussed (purchase,
donation, pledge or exchange?). The description of the books is enhanced by the
information concerning the manuscript copyists and the footnotes include refer¬
ences to the majority of colophons, subscription notes and other notes placed on
the pages of the main text, protective notes and endpapers found in the codices.
Another part includes a short presentation of the time of origin of the manuscripts
and incunabula. The last part is devoted to the external description of manuscripts
and incunabula. Separate sub-chapters concern the illuminations, binding, writ¬
ing, writing material. The assessment of the illuminations frequently facilitated the
establishment of the provenance of the codices in which they were contained. The
state of preservation of all the bindings was also presented, the greatest emphasis
was put on the medieval bindings. The terminology which is used here to describe
the external features of manuscripts and incunabula was drawn from the

The chapter entitled The content of the manuscripts and incunabula is the fruit
of a detailed analysis whose aim was the identification of the works collected in
the codices and incunabula. They were grouped in fourteen thematic divisions.
The arrangement that was adopted does not admit clear-cut divisions and it also
eludes strict temporal distinctions of fields of study when the sciences did not
have a specific object of study and a well-defined area of study. That is why rep¬
etitions proved to be inevitable. Wherever possible, each work is furnished with
a reference to its author (if he or she is known) and its content. If the text was
published, the respective data is indicated in the footnotes. As a rule, the most
recent editions of works are indicated; there are frequent references to multi¬
ple editions of the same work. In the case of some of the works there is indica¬
tion of their position within the manuscript tradition (their place in the
stemma
codicum, the value which they constitute for textual criticism) and the literature
which explores this field.
The work is furnished by an introduction, conclusion and a bibliographical in¬
dex which comprises the manuscript and printed sources and the literature com¬
prising publications of works from the
Henryków
library, reference and catalogue
works. The bibliographical index is followed by a selection of illustrations of the
Henryków
codices.
As opposed to other orders, the Cistercians were not an order whose aim and
obligation was research and intellectual work. They did not attach that much
importance to books as the
Bernardine
monks, canon regulars and Dominican
monks. However, the activity of the
Henryków
monastery should be held in high
estimation as the makers of books. The proof of this is not only the beautiful
writing of the manuscripts made in the monastic scriptorium, but also its or¬
namentation. The rich illuminations included in a part of the
Henryków
manu¬
scripts indicate a fondness of
Henryków
Cistercians and Cistercians in general
for aesthetic values. This idea refers especially to the liturgical manuscripts. The
monastic bookbinders created works of considerable value as well. The fruits of
their labours, the binding of several manuscripts, may be admired even to this
day. As far as the copying and production of books is concerned, it seems that the
Henryków
abbey was inferior only to the older and bigger
Lubiąż
monastery. The
Henryków
scriptorium began its operation a few years after the foundation of the
monastery (mid-13th century) and it operated for a few centuries.
As far as the collecting of books is concerned, the contributions of the
Hen¬
ryków
monks were also considerable. This is proved by the estimated several
hundred volumes of the medieval library in
Henryków
which was systematically
growing. The books collected right before the secularisation (in
1810)
amounted
to
20000
volumes
-
this indicates that the growth of the number of books was
gradual and it persisted during the whole period of the monastery s existence.
This is proof of the continuity of book culture in the monastery and quite wide-
ranging intellectual interests of the monks who presumably demanded a continu¬
ous development of the availability of books in the monastic library. Since the

15th century new books were certainly necessary due to the existence of a school
in the monastery.
The estimated number of a few hundred volumes in the
Henryków
library dur¬
ing the Middle Ages makes us conclude that as far as the size is concerned, this
was one of the biggest Cistercian collections in Silesia and, presumably, one of the
biggest Cistercian collections in Poland. It seems that the
Henryków
library was
comparable in terms of size with the biggest book collections of other orders in
Silesia and in Poland.
As far as languages are concerned, the
Henryków
library presents itself as
a typical medieval library. Latin, the language of medieval Europe and of the
Church, definitely dominates in the library. The Church used Latin in its liturgy
and administration; it was also the language of the educated. Out of the national
languages represented by the manuscripts German occupies a privileged posi¬
tion, represented in nine codices. The collection of
Henryków
incunabula which
are preserved to this day is written exclusively in Latin. Apart from German, the
library includes works written in Polish and Czech. The former is represented by
only one sentence, but its significance for Polish culture is significant: Day,
ut
ja
pobrusa,
a ti poziwaľ
which appears in the
Księga henrykowska.
This is the oldest
known record of the Polish language.
The subject matter of the
Henryków
library does not differ from the subject
matter of other medieval manuscripts and incunabula in Silesia and in Poland.
An analysis of its content indicates a manifold advantage of religious literature
over secular literature, a phenomenon which may be discerned in other librar¬
ies. The library has a conservative character with a predominance of theological
literature in the broadest sense. There are writings which belong to both sacred
and pragmatic literature.
The library of the
Henryków
monastery with its collection of books consti¬
tutes a significant part of the cultural and spiritual heritage of the Cistercians in
Silesia, in Poland and in Europe. A closer examination of this collection not only
extends our knowledge about the Silesian libraries during the Middle Ages, but
also about the book culture in Central Europe. This contributes to the enrichment
of our knowledge about the monastic culture of this region.
