against the background of former
Biecz
county towns
Summary
This publication concerns the history of the town of
Jaśliska
during the medieval
period, against the background of towns in the former
Biecz
county. The mono¬
graph focuses on urban planning and architectonic issues in Jasliska, confron¬
ting them with the urban planning and architecture of other towns of the county.
Jaśliska
is located about
35
km south of
Krosno,
in the territory of the pre¬
sent-day
Podkarpackie
Voivodeship. The former town was established in
1366
by a foundation act issued by king
Kazimierz Wielki
(Casimir
the Great) who per¬
mitted a Hungarian, Jan from
Hanselin,
to found a town, initially called Honstadt
(High Town), in the tributary of the
Jasiołka
on the left bank of the river.
Establishing the town was connected with colonising the eastern borderlands
of the Krakow domain which, before the change of the frontier resulting from
seizing Halych
Rus,
were poorly urbanised and inhabited. By founding new tow¬
ns and villages here,
Kazimierz Wielki
wished to develop and strengthen the
defensive features of the area which, despite formally being a part of the Polish
Kingdom for several years, was still a target of Lithuanian and Tartar raids. The
origins of the town were also linked to the trade routes running northwards from
Hungary, through the
Beskid
pass, of vital importance in those times. Owing to
its location on the above mentioned route, at the end of the Middle Ages the town
became an important trade centre with a customs house, numerous merchant
privileges including the right of wine storage. Particularly the privileges connec¬
ted with transporting wine from Hungary hastened the development of the town,
initiated during the medieval period and hampered in later ages, which finally led
to Jasliska losing its town rights in the
1st
half of the 20th century. It does not
mean, however, that
Jaśliska
lost its cultural values. Although the town fell into
decline, yet today it can boast a medieval urban layout representing the so called
turbine moDelegatura The history of medieval architectonic objects that once
existed in
Jaśliska
is also worth finding out. Even though they did not survive
till today, on the basis of a careful analysis of source documents, archive carto¬
graphy and iconography one can venture formulating their general characteri¬
stics. While mentioning the historic architecture of the town, one cannot ignore

defensive ramparts whose relics existed here as late as the
1960s.
Nowadays,
merely their remains in the form of small escarpments and embankments can be
observed in the area.
Currently the town, probably also because of having been degraded to the
status of a village, has fallen into oblivion. This work is aimed at bringing closer
the history of the former town of Honstadt
(Jaśliska)
during its heyday
-
the me¬
dieval period. It also has to draw attention to the need for its
revitalisation,
and
for revalorization in the area of particular cultural value.
The first chapters of the monograph present the state of research on the
history of
Jaśliska
in the Middle Ages, and the research methods applied n the
process.
Further on, foundations of towns chartered by king
Kazimierz Wielki
in Lesser
Poland are described, as well as a road network in the lands of south-eastern
Lesser Poland towards the end of the
1
5th century.
The next chapter deals with towns in the
Biecz
county in the Middle Ages
and their urban models. It should also be mentioned, that during this period
the Krakow domain was divided into three large districts
(Kraków, Nowy Sącz
and
Biecz)
and six counties. The latter consisted of Krakow, Proszowice,
Książ,
Lelow, Czchów
and
Biecz
counties. The above described division was connec¬
ted with a reform of administrative-judicial structures in the Polish lands, which
began during the reign of
Władysław Łokietek
and was continued by
Kazimierz
Wielki.
Because of settlement development
,
the previously functioning system
of castellanies was replaced with a county organisation. After the division of the
Krakow domain into counties, the area of the
Biecz
county covered
2300
km2.
In the west, it bordered on
Nowy Sącz
district, in the north on the
Sandomierz
lands, in the east on the
Sanok
lands and
Rus Voivodeship.
At the turn of the
13th and 14th century, in the county there existed eleven towns:
Ciężkowice,
Bobowa, Biecz, Gorlice, Szymbark, Jasło, Dębowiec, Osiek, Żmigród Nowy,
Dukla and Jaśliska.
This chapter also presents a typological classification of medieval centres,
according to which models of towns in the former
Biecz
county were determined.
This classification defines two fundamental groups which occurred in Poland in
the high medieval period i.e. at the turn of the 13th and 14th century. The first
were towns adapting previous settlement elements in the form of a trade settle¬
ment. The other group consisted of new towns, which were orthogonal structu¬
res. This group encompassed simple and complex layouts. The simple layout
subgroup contains five types of layouts according to which the towns in question
were analysed. They are: a 9-square model, a turbine sometimes called windmill
model, quasi-oval also known as Silesian, orthogonal enclosed within an oval (or
a circle) and a model with one axis. Further in the chapter, after the presentation
of the
Biecz
county and urban layouts, all the county towns were described in the
context of their structures. Those analyses were carried out on the
19th-century
cadastral plans.

The following chapter presents the issues associated with the spatial deve¬
lopment of
Jaśliska
itself. It commences with a section characterising the pre-
chartered period in the area where the chartered town was established in
1366.
It also discusses the results of recent archaeological excavations carried out in
the town and its vicinity. Section two addresses the questions associated with
the period of
Jaśliska
foundation, taking into account town-growing factors, ori¬
gins and the site where the town was located. The last section presents the issu¬
es related to the urban layout of the town, its construction and traffic.
Unit seven concerns the medieval building development in
Jaśliska,
against
the background of architecture of other towns of the former
Biecz
county. The
form and character of town walls, main architectonic objects as well as residen¬
tial and utility buildings were characterised here. Section one describes defen¬
sive fortifications in
Jaśliska,
their shape, building materials used to erect them,
and alterations in various periods. Their supposed outline was also presented,
and confronted with Mieg s map, a cadastral plan from the mid-19th century, and
a contemporary aerial photograph. The next section concerns the parish church
in
Jaśliska,
which was erected in the town during its foundation period. Trans¬
formations of the church and source information about its form throughout the
centuries are presented here. Because the first parish church in
Jaśliska
was an
object built of timber, other wooden temples from the area, this time going slightly
beyond the
Biecz
county, were used as comparative background. Churches lo¬
cated within the area between the
Wisłoka
and the San river were selected for
a comparative analysis. Sections three and four characterise two objects func¬
tioning in the
Jaśliska
parish during the Middle Ages, i.e. school and hospital.
Those buildings were described on the background of other medieval objects of
that type. An analysis regarding documented occurrence of such objects in other
towns of the
Biecz
county was also carried out. The subsequent section refers
to the most important object associated the life of the town, namely its town hall
building. Its history, form, and building material were presented, and then its lo¬
cation was analysed on Mieg s map, a cadastral plan from the mid-19th century,
and a contemporary aerial photograph. A comparative study of town hall buildin¬
gs in remaining towns of the
Biecz
county was also conducted. In that section
trade appliances, situated in the market square in Jasliska and in the vicinity of
the town hall, were characterised. Section six presents the history of wine stora¬
ge and trade in the town. It also describes relics of medieval wine cellars which
have survived in
Jaśliska
to this day. Finally, an analysis of towns in the
Biecz
county which had been granted the right of wine storage was conducted. The
following section describes the story of taverns and hostelries functioning in the
town. Their architecture and character were presented against the background
of other such objects. Section eight concerns the town bath house which existed
in
Jaśliska
since the time of the town foundation. It was described hypothetically,
taking into consideration the manner of using and the form of other Polish bath
houses from the same period. A comparison of bath houses functioning in other

towns of the county in question was also made. The next section contains cha¬
racteristics of the brewery which, according to source documents, functioned
in
Jaśliska.
Its supposed location and form were described; studies concerning
such objects in other towns analysed in this work were carried out. Section ten
presents the issue of mills which existed in
Jaśliska
since the time of the town
foundation. Their manner of functioning and owners were determined, as well as
hypothetical locations confirmed by the enclosed Mieg s map. This section also
presents the map of mills location in the 15th century, in the area of the former
Biecz
county and its close proximity. The following section describes the bishop s
grange, probably established in
Jaśliska
already in the 15th century, after cre¬
ating a demesne belonging to Bishops of
Przemyśl.
It was presented against the
background of farms in other towns of the
Biecz
county. Residential buildings of
Jaśliska
were characterised in section twelve. They were described in the form
of a research hypothesis founded on the basis of knowledge concerning house
in medieval towns in the Krakow domain, and confronted with housing in other
towns of the
Biecz
county from the given period. The last section concerns the
customs house existing in the town during the medieval period, and must have
been a significant element of its functioning. Determining its hypothetical loca¬
tion in the town was attempted, as well as an analysis of occurrence of customs
houses in other towns of the county.
In conclusion, it should be emphasised that this work is the second in a series
of monographs of king
Kazimierz
towns located in the borderlands of the Krakow
region. The first, concerning
Skawina,
located within the borderline of the we¬
stern part of the Krakow domain, was published in
2012.
This one, is in turn the
essence of several years of research on the history of
Jaśliska
and the eastern
part of the Krakow domain during the medieval period.
