Political journalistic writings about Ukraine and Ukrainians in weekly maga¬
zines
"Myśl Polska"
and
"Nowa Myśl
Polska"
The examination of the press gave the knowledge of its ideological and politi¬
cal contents and helped to reconstruct the reality in view of a selected system.
The weekly magazines
Myśl Polska
and
Nowa Myśl Polska
have reflected the
nationalist ideology which protected the interests of Poland. The journalists in¬
tended to show the Polish-Ukrainian relations in terms of historical experience.
They tried to restore the memory of the events in which the Poles
-
inhabitants
of the former area of
Kresy Wschodnie
[Eastern Borderlands] of the Republic
of Poland
-
were victims of Ukrainians' actions. The message was about the
methods of promotion the awareness of the past. The journalists protested
against the attempts to relativize political evaluations. The language they used
to discuss the subject matter has clearly discredited the image of Ukraine and
Ukrainians.

The Image of Ukraine and Ukrainians in the journal
"Opoka w Kraju"
The Periodical
"Opoka w Kraju"
("The Bedrock in country") maybe classified
as mainstream among national magazines. Such a view can be corroborated
by the references to the Catholic ethics, perception of the nation as the high¬
est value, historicism, the role of a family in maintaining one's identity and
living in accordance with the Latin civilization. In its columns, the magazine

presented the role of the nation, the national vision of the state, foreign policy,
and the importance of religion.
Maciej Giertych
is the editor of "The Bedrock in country". The ratio of the
editor of the letter to Ukraine is a result of anxieties in many aspects: economic,
cultural and social. The nationalists are afraid that Ukraine is the satellite state
of Germany. Giertych wrote that Ukraine should be independent of west influ¬
ences.
Maciej
Giertych thinks that, an independence of the state of Ukraine is
in the interest of Poland. Image of Ukraine and Ukrainians in "The Bedrock
in a country" results from the history of both nations. The nationalists accuse
Ukrainians of anti-Polish actions. They think that the Ukrainian nationalism
can be featured in chauvinism that can encourage many to fight witch the Polish
national identity, in particular with the Roman Catholic Church.

Ukraine is comparison to other adjacent countries in the most popular Polish
information services
Ukraine seems to be a completely irrelevant country, mentioned by journal¬
ists only in negative contexts; such a conclusion can be drawn after a detailed
analysis of the most popular Polish information services:
Wiadomości
and
Fakty.
This article examines news broadcasted from the period of April
10
to
May
10, 2013
in detail, focusing on information about countries other than
Poland, and in particular on the exposure and the framework of news related
to Poland neighbours, the duration of the messages, the verbal and iconic as¬
pects, selection and contributors of the experts and behavior of journalists.
The analysis showed that in terms of the media, the most interesting coun¬
try for viewers is the United States. Among the neighbours first place on the
podium was occupied by Germany and Russia. Conclusions about forgotten
Ukraine may grieve, especially in the context of stereotypes, namenly the drunk
state with big
HIV
problem, which after all is a part of the image of "the eter¬
nal enemy of the people". According to the study, in relation to Poland, Kiev
can still be called one. The authors suggest a solution that would help the
pro-neighbourhood policy towards Ukraine.

The Ukrainian chronicle in the concept of the East in
"Kultura"
The emigre chronicles in the journal
"Kultura"
constituted a specific form of
journalistic commentary at the same time also constituting an informational
value. Furthermore, the chronicles fulfilled few roles, including reporting and
informational ones that were significant for the emigrants scattered through¬
out the world. There were pragmatic clarifications regarding implementation
of political concepts concerned with collaboration and understanding. Those
concepts reflected the position of
"Kultura"
towards political refugees. Moreo¬
ver, the chronologic presentation of the Ukrainian chronicles emphasizes how
crucial the knowledge of basic factual matter is to comprehend their part in
the Eastern program of
"Kultura".
Those facts were intellegible and necessary
to recipients behind the Iron Curtain and on emigration, allowing them to stay
informed about vital issues of sovietized Ukraine. Conversely, this constitutes
the historical value of the chronicles nowadays. They reflect long-forgotten
characters, disputes, parties, programs, therefore after years the chronicles
teach different perspectives regarding the modern history of Eastern Europe.

The issue of Polish-Ukrainian relations in
"Tygodnik Powszechny"
(1989-1995)
The aim of the scrutiny is to discuss the media image of Ukraine in
"Tygodnik
Powszechny"
between the years
1989-1995.
As a result, two domains were
distinguished: the issue of Ukraine's geopolitical concepts and the problem of
overcoming historical resentments in Polish-Ukrainian relations. The publicists
of
"Tygodnik Powszechny"
supported the independence efforts of Ukrainians
as well as cooperation between Poland and Ukraine; seeing it as a guarantee
of the sovereignty of both countries. However, the realistic approach of the
geopolitical situation prompted towards the avoidance of antagonizing Russia.
That concept regarding Polish and Ukrainian relations was consistent with the
two-track policy on Polish relations with Ukraine and Russia led by Minister
of Foreign Affairs
Krzysztof
Skubiszewski. Nevertheless, more explicit was the
situation of journalists of
"Tygodnik Powszechny"
in terms of the position of
the Ukrainian minority in Poland. They advocated for respecting their rights
and restitution for injustices of history, where the operation
"Wisla" was
con¬
sidered the defining moment. Moreover, they opposed making those actions
dependent on the decisions of the Ukrainian side.

Ukraine in the journalism of the Cracow
"Arka"
bimonthly in the years
1991-
1995)
Russian and Polish contexts
The paper consists of an introduction, two main parts and the ending. The
introduction discusses the history of the
"Arka"
periodical and the causes
and stages of the breakdown of the USSR. The first part concerns the issues
of Russia-Ukraine relations. It discusses the consequences of the appearance
of Ukrainian state, the conceivable conceptions of state union of Russia and
Ukraine and the problematic of border disputes. The second part discusses
the Polish-Ukrainian issues. Historical topics, the questions of borders, na¬
tional minorities and the political relations in the Poland-Ukraine-Russia
triangle, as well as the rebirth of Ukrainian nationalism are all discussed.
In the ending the author attempts to recapitulate the opinions and estimates
of the
"Arka"
journalists, concerning the Russian-Ukrainian and Ukrainian-
Polish issues.

Polish-Ukrainian relationships at the pages of the regional and local press of
Wielkopolska
region
The Polish-Ukrainian relations presented in the local and regional press are
rather neutral. Publications about Polish-Ukrainian relations in the
Wielko¬
polska
press refer to three aspects: a history of Polish-Ukrainian relations,
an international cooperation of local governments and sport. The local and
regional media are dominated by general information. This stability is a feature
of the local media, confirmed by the research of readership (PBC,
2010),
and
the public opinion which is a part of nationwide media. The Ukraine becoming
member of the European Union is a common theme appearing while discussing
all aspect of Polish-Ukrainian relations.

The debate concerning Volhynia in weekly reviews in Poland
The article aims at assessing the level of interest regarding the 70th anniversary
of events in Volhynia in selected weekly opinion in Poland and highlighting
their approach to the issue. The inquiry has included such titles as "Do
Rzeczy",
"Duży
Format"
-
weekly pull-out to
"Gazeta Wyborcza",
"Newsweek",
"Polityka",
Summaries
"Przegląd", "Sieci", "Tygodnik Powszechny", "Uważam Rze. Inaczej pisane" and
"Wprost".
The anniversary of the events in Volhynia fostered many initiatives
to establish the Polish-Ukrainian dialogue on the national, spiritual and so¬
cial level. The variety of standings on the matter visible in the press allowed
to underline still existing difficulties on that subject in Polish and Ukrainian
nation associated with the policy of historical memory of these two nations.

Freedom and Orange Colour. The Image of the Orange Revolution in the Polish
Media
During the Orange Revolution most Polish popular newspapers and journals
were focused on covering the situation in Ukraine. The image of the revolu¬
tion was positive. The protesters and "orange" politicians were described as
members of a new social movement, whose role was supposed, to change the
country. The main themes of the narration about the Ukrainian revolution
included: the symbolism of orange colour, the comparisons of the events in
Ukraine to episodes from Polish history and the myth of the "two Ukraines"
and
démocratisation.
Also the participation of Polish politicians in the events
in Ukraine was one of the main topics.

The Image of Ukraine and Ukrainians in
"Nie -
dziennik cotygodniowy"
in
2004-2013
Ukraine, as it is directly adjacent to Polish borders, found its way into political,
social and economic debates in the Polish media. The discussions connected
with the aforementioned topics often appear in
"Nie - dziennik cotygodnio¬
wy".
The articles mostly relate to the following issues
-
the so called "Orange
Revolution", the upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections in Ukraine
and the status of Ukrainian immigrants in Poland. The image of Ukraine and
Ukrainians presented in
"Nie - dziennik cotygodniowy"
is very realistic with
slight satirical touch. The articles published in the paper point at irregularities
in the functioning of government institutions and offices in both countries,
Poland and Ukraine. The authors comment on differences between the official
stance of the politicians and the actual actions taken by them.

2012
parliamentary elections in Ukraine from the perspective of Poland
Parliamentary elections in Ukraine, which took place on 28th October
2012,
attracted greater interest of the Polish media. Because of the focus on the U.S.
presidential campaign, the political situation in Ukraine was perceived only in
the context of election fraud and harassment of the opposition. A special place
in the media discourse was taken by
Vitali Klitschko,
whom many publications
were devoted to. Polish readers could learn much about the ruling Ukrain¬
ian Party of Regions or the main ally of the opposition "Batkivschyna"
-
the
nationalist party
"Svoboda".
In short, the political image of Ukraine created
by the Polish media was simplified, and detailed analysis showing Ukrainian
politics from different points of view was not enough.

the image of
Vitali
Klitschko in the media
The subject of the analysis presented in this article is
Vitali
Klitschko, WBC
world heavyweight champion, whose popularity had an impact on the results
od
2012
parliamentary elections in Ukraine.
Vitali
Klitschko attracts attention of
the Polish media, both in terms of his sports and political career. According to
the journalists the image of a box champion and also this of a political leader is
very positive. It is significant especially with respect to the amount of criticism
present in reports describing the actions undertaken on the Polish political
area. What was highlighted was his knowledge and eloquence, model family
life, but also his power and the ability to pursue the goal specified beforehand.

"The Georgiy Gongadze case" in the Polish media
"The Georgiy Gongadze case" has caused major political crisis in the country
since
1991
when Ukraine gained independence. The mutilated body, identified
as the body of Georgiy Gongadze

a well-known Ukrainian political journal¬
ist, has been found in the woods in the suburbs of Kyiv. What happened next
shows corrupted and criminal nature of Ukrainian government. The articles
and information in the news have revealed a series of illegal actions under¬
taken during the murder investigation of the journalist. One of them included
'purloining' the body of the G. Gongadze from the morgue. The Polish press

texts published at tvn.24 website from

All texts concern the Ukrainian group FE-

media become a mirror in which recipients perceive surrounding them world,
therefore this article attempts to answer the question how language affects
media image of the group. In this context, this paper was divided into social,
political and international problems issues raised in the protests.

AIDS
-
danger for contemporary Ukraine
AIDS was first discovered in the USA in
1978.
Between
1983
and
2008, 25
million people died because of
HIV.
Althought Africa is still believed to be the
place most affected by AIDS, statistics show that it is not the only one. A great
increase of
HIV
infections is now observed in countries like Ukraine.
Even thought Poland is familiar with the problem of AIDS in the Ukraine,
it is not a popular topic for discission. From time to time information about
development of AIDS behind east border appears in Polish media. That infor¬
mation shapes the way contemporary Ukraine is seen by the Polish society. |
