Resumé
At the turn of the millennium, social exclusion became typical, especially
for the border region of northern Bohemia, i.e. a territory which, from
a long-term historical perspective, is ethnically and nationally mixed area
of the Czech Republic. It is exactly the Ústí region in northern Bohemia
that became the location of our research of Czech-Roma stereotypes
because they met several parameters suitable for research. Indeed, this
region has the largest numbers of the Roma population in the CR and,
at the same time, it is a region in which the lowest degree of tolerance
towards Roma has been identified out of all other regions.
Stereotypes, in view of the considerable social sensitivity is a phenom-
enon that requires a specific methodological approach. The research was
time-limited and therefore was conducted in 2010 in a form of anony-
mous interviews on the basis of previously prepared both open-ended
and close-ended questions that the respondents were asked by the in-
terviewers. Participant observations were studied in combination using
the quantitative and qualitative form; approaches on the boundary of
socio-ethnology and social psychology were applied. Interviewers filled
a total of 184 forms.
Of the many aspects studied within the research, we focused on the
stereotypical ideas Czechs have about the Roma culture and on stereo-
types in naming Roma in the Czech Republic. It was a wide range of
stereotypes from negativist, racist and Anti-Gypsy aimed to stereotypes
of romanticising nature. At the same time powerfully projected to ste-
reotypes still alive primordialistic and essentialist understanding of the
Roma identity. The respondents declared that Roma share and represent
some immutable “natural” core, sort of their own essence of negative
“Gypsyism”. This is particularly significant reflected in the answers to
the research questions focused on the variability of naming Roma when

certain leitmotiv response is still saying that “Gypsy remains Gypsy,
either do what he does”. Interestingly, this approach stereotypes of “in-
corrigibility” of Roma, in the sense of a kind of stable sticker can be seen
in traditional Czech folk administration since the time of folk books in
the 18th century, which testifies to the high resistance of this stereotype
in folk environment until now.
Although during the totalitarian communist regime in the former
Czechoslovakia stereotypes against Roma in society existed, they were
not professionally examined, even to a greater extent politically exploi-
ted. After 1989, the stereotypes among people again came to life and
gradually became an instrument of populist politics. The Czech example
shows how the function of stereotypes in different historical periods,
changes, modifies and upgrades. The whole of the Czech society seems
to be affected by creeping intolerance against Roma and, given the enor-
mous scope of this intolerance, we can already talk about the new face of
the existing Anti-Gypsyism. It is now present in all areas of life and social
structures. Anti-Gypsyism is part of racism and, throughout the history,
it underwent some development and changes. The task of social science
disciplines is to study and analyze a virulent form of Anti-Gypsyism in
Europe. A partial contribution to this broad topic is also this publication
which is focused on current forms of cultural stereotypes manifested in
the Czech Republic against Roma.
