AT THE PERIPHERY OF GREAT EASTERN CIVILIZATION:
ANCIENT GREEKS AS BARBARIANS
Summary. As is well-known, the very notion of the barbarian
for the first time appeared in the Ancient Greece. However, later in the
world history prevalent was not the Greek concept of barbarity
(barbarians as all foreigners) but the Roman one (barbarians as
underdeveloped peripheral peoples). If we look from the latter
perspective (which is nearer to ours, too), it was ancient Greeks
themselves who could in some sense be conceived as barbarians. They
lived and developed at the periphery of more ancient (and till a certain
moment more developed) civilizations of the Orient, and in their
development they borrowed many things from those civilizations

literacy, many forms in arts, etc.). For such a large and flourishing
empire as the Achaemenid Persia was, the Hellenes, no doubt, were a
marginal highland people with rather savage habits, a people that did
not want to receive the civilized imperial order. All this, of course,
does not contradict the fact of the civilization breakthrough
managed
by the Greeks from a certain moment.

Summary: In the article the problems of interrelations between
ancient civilization and tribal world of the Black Sea Coast are
examined. The peculiarities of the regional way of hetlenization and
romanization
of aborigines. As a concrete example the contacts
between Greek colonists and aborigines on the area of European
Bosporus from the beginning of a colonization to the late ancient
period were analysed.

THE GHASSANTOS AND THE FATE
OF THE BYZANTINE EMPIRE
Summary. The article focuses on the role of Arabs in the Eastern
limits of the Byzantine Empire. Special attention is given to the
Ghassanids, who faithfully served the Empire more than a century. As
the federates of Byzantium, they were actively involved in virtually
every military conflict that took place between Byzantium and Iran,
were engaged in transit trade. The Ghassanids also played the huge
role in maintaining Monophysitism. If emperors, notably Maurice, had
treated with more confidence to the Ghassanids, the consolidation of
the Arabs under the banner of Islam could not have been or it would
have been much more modest.

Summary. The article explores the
Gallo-Roman
intellectual
Sidonius Apollinaris individual experience of understanding and
estimating rapid changes and occurring events. Grounding on the
analysis of Sidonius Apollinaris letters, the way he saw the appearing
barbarous power is reconstructed. In his works, the German royal

power makes first steps that cause its transition from the heroic epoch
to the military one, and becomes one of the most important elements in
the new political and social system. Speaking about Theoderic IPs
civilitas, the author especially wants to emphasize that the Visigothic
ruler had already proven his belonging to the Roman world. This first
meeting of the civilitas and barbarous ruler shows that the rex and
royal power are no longer perceived as something totally alien to the
Roman tradition and set of values. Sidonius Apollinaris never spoke
straightly about the collapse of the Western Roman Empire, but he
always fully realized the meaning of the occurring events, did not
cherish dreams and entertain illusions. He saw how the influence of the
Visigothic royal power was growing and spreading and

Summary. Using a complex of Latin and Greek texts of the
period, the author tries to analyze the problem of symbols of power of
the Visigothic rulers of the Kingdom of Toulouse and their successors
till the middle of the

cen.
The absence of sufficient information about
using of the Roman type symbols and the informal character of the
Visigothic royal power in general can be explained by the fact of king s
prevalent orientation to the Barbarian army, which was a main base of
their power. The situation changed, when the kings began to approach
with the Roman local elites.

VIZION
OF GOTHS IN THE WORKS
OF ST. AMBROSE OF MILAN
Summary. The article is devoted to the image of Goths in the
writings of St. Ambrose of Milan, outstanding bishop and theologian of
the second half of the IV century. The author shows that according the
bishop of Milan, the Christian faith was closely associated with the
Roman patriotism and his negative vision of Goths was determined not
only by their violence against the Roman people, but also by their
Aryanism. The spread of this heresy among the barbarian tribes do not
lead to their rapprochement with the Romans. Its only result was
barbarization of
Arians.

THE DYNASTIC ONOMASTICON AND ETHNO-POLITICAL
DEVELOPMENT OF THE ANGLO-SAXON KINGDOMS
IN 6th -7th CENTURIES
Summary. The Anglo-Saxon dynastic onomasticon of the
Germanic invaders well illustrated not only as a social and cultural
phenomenon of the Old Germanic two-element naming, but also as a
symbolic indicator of ethno-political development of the Anglo-Saxon
kingdoms. The anthroponomical situation in the Anglo-Saxon royal
dynasties presented a unique combination of the Germanic oral
traditions and the intensive foreign influences: the presence of the first-
elements (prototheme) Eormen-ZEorcen- in the Kent genealogy and the
Frankish political adoption; by contrast, the existence of the
native
Saxon elements Cyne-ZCyth-ZCeol-ZCen- and early British assimilation
in the pedigree of the royal family ofWessex; the good evidence of the
strong mythopoeic relationship between East Anglian kings and their
Scandinavian ancestors; similarly, the ethnonyme Swaef- in the Essex
royal family and cultural connection of the British Isles with the heroic
epic tradition of the Continent.

Early Modern Times. At issue were the Italians claim to superiority
over other European nations. They were based on the exclusive right of

was a challenge to all the other European nations. In the changed
international political situation of conflict of civilization and barbarism
got a brand new sound.

historical problems, concerning the ancient Black Sea states, which had
been earlier put forward and partly studied in Russian Classical
scholarship before
1917.
The author is showing how these problems
were solved in the Soviet science and how they are under research now
in the post-Soviet Russian scholarship and in the republics of the
former USSR

now the independent states. Among these important
questions and scientific problems are the Greek colonization of the
Black Sea Coast, creation and developing ofpoleis, mutual interaction

Summary: The perception of Russian travelers and officials of
the Balkan Slavs during the first half of the XlXth century was
extremely contradictory. It varied from rejection of barbaric (Asian)
features to hopes for progress. The formation of the stereotype of

in the middle of the century was caused not only by the
ideological influence of the Slavic reciprocity , but also by social
changes in Russia.
