OPOROWSCY, SULIMA
COAT OF ARMS
Career of a magnate s family
in the late-medieval poland
SUMMARY
This monograph falls within the scope of genealogical and prosopo-
graphic research on a noble family in the late-medieval Poland. It was
based on an extensive source query performed primarily in court
archives from the area of
Łęczyca
province, and, to a lesser degree, from
Kujawy
(Kuyavia) and
Wielkopolska
(Greater Poland] regions, as well as
on printed sources. The family of Oporowscy, Sulima coat of arms, was one
of the most significant magnate s families living in the region of so-called
wide
Wielkopolska
in the late Middle Ages
(XIV -
beginnings of the
XVI
c].
Its members included, inter alia, two chiefs of Jagiellonian Royal Chancery
-
Deputy Chancellor of the Treasury,
Władysław
from
Oporów
and
Andrzej
(his nephew}, two bishops, including the Primate of Poland (the mentioned
Władysław],
province governors and castellans sitting on a royal council as
well as highly-placed clergymen
-
prelates and canons of the most important
Polish cathedra chapters. Many members of the Oporowscy family partici¬
pated actively in shaping of the internal and foreign Polish politics, especially
during the reign of
Władysław Jagiełło
and his son,
Kazmierz Jagiellończyk
(Casimir
Jagiellon].
Oporowscy always belonged to the courtly party and fre¬
quently engaged in various political activities of Jagiellons, especially those
connected to wars and Polish-Teutonic peace negotiations or the incorpo¬
ration of West Mazovia to the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland. Therefore,
the family, or at least some of its representatives, may undoubtedly be rec¬
ognized as all-Polish elite. This is a sufficient reason to examine the history
of this magnate s family in greater detail, particularly because so far families
related to
Małopolska
(e.g.
Tarnowscy, Leliwa
coat of arms;
Tęczyńscy, Topór
coat of arms;
Szafrańcowie, Stary Koń
coat of arms;
Rogowscy, Działosza
coat of arms or Kmitowie, Szreniawa, coat of arms] were mainly presented

in modern monographs. In this book I did not include genealogies of sev¬
eral noble families originating from the stem of Oporowscy living in
Kujawy
(Służewscy,
Chodowscy) and in
Wielkopolska (Goślubscy, Grocholscy),
for the
reason that I would like to examine the history of those families in a separate
monograph.
The year
1339
may be considered an initial chronological turning point
of the monograph, since this is when the overlord of
Łęczyca,
Stefan, the heir
of
Oporów,
appeared in the historical records for the first time. The beginning
of the
XVI
c, i.e. the turn of the Middle Ages and the Modern Times, is marked
as the final turning point, however, due to genealogical reasons I finished
the review of the family s history on the years
1540-1542,
when the death
of province governor of
Brześć
-
Jan Oporowski (junior], and of
Łęczyca
-
Andrzej
Oporowski, the representatives of the sixth generation of
Oporów
was recorded. The geographical scope of the book includes all places related
to the activity of Oporowscy, nevertheless, the greatest attention is devoted
to their estates in the province of
Łęczyca
concentrated around
Oporów
in
Orłów
district.
The monograph of Oporowscy, Sulima coat of arms, consists of four chap¬
ters. Introduction, summary, genealogical tables and bibliography constitute
its integral part. The first chapter entitled The first generations. The origins
of Oporowscy career in the
Łęczyca
region until
1391
discusses probable
beginnings of the career of Oporowscy family s ancestors in the
Łęczyca
land.
In my opinion the family had derived from northern
Małopolska
(Lesser
Poland), and they appeared in the central Poland because of
Konrad
I of Mas-
ovia in the second quarter of the
XIII
с
Their first representative in this region
mentioned in the historical materials was
Budzisław Strzeszkowic
(the son
of Strzeszek), a judge in
Łęczyce,
the owner of the Ostrowsko village near
Uniejów
(1241].
It may be that the name of the family and the coat of arms,
i.e. Sulima, was made from the name of the
Sulimów
village (presently Sul-
mów) in
the
Sieradz
region.
Bogusław,
judge of
Łęczyca
(1302),
was prob¬
ably the grandson of
Budzisław.
I believe that the mentioned
Bogusław
was
the first owner of
Oporów
and a founder of the local parish, which had been
established before the division of the family possessions between the mem¬
bers of Oporowscy family and the heirs of
Oporówek
(Little
Oporów)
closely
related to them. In the following part of the chapter I discussed the careers
of the representatives of the two consecutive generations of Oporowscy rep-

resented by an overlord (and then a judge) of
Łęczyca,
Stefan and his three
sons: a judge of
Łęczyca - Włodzimierz,
scholastic of
Łęczyca - Bogusław
and
the third one of unknown name. The career of Oporowscy family in the
XIV
с
was developing fairly slowly, at that time they were holding only middle
offices in the land hierarchy. A connection between Sulimowie and a devel¬
oping land judiciary of
Łęczyca
is noticeable. In that period the genealogy
(only one son of
Włodzimierz - Mikołaj)
and a church career of one of the
brothers
(Bogusław)
were conductive to the growth of their wealth.
In the second chapter entitled Province governor of
Łęczyca, Mikołaj
from
Oporów
-
a builder of the family fortune I focused on the activity of the real
founder of Oporowscy career, namely
Mikołaj
from
Oporów.
He became
a close collaborator of the king
Władysław Jagiełło,
who at that time was
forming his own courtly party. He participated in various diplomatic mis¬
sions connected to king s policy towards the Teutonic Order. In view
ofthat,
in the year
1419
Mikołaj
obtained an appointment for the highest office
in the land hierarchy of
Łęczyca:
local province governor (passing over a few
intermediate levels of the clerical career).
Mikołaj
from
Oporów
was a head
of the royal party in his home land and one of the most significant support¬
ers of
Jagiełło
in that part of Poland. He also became a creator of the eco¬
nomic power of his family, as over years he had built the greatest property
complex in the Province of
Łęczyca
(with
25
settlements:
1
city,
15
entire vil¬
lages and
9
parts of villages). In the ancestral residence province governor
Mikołaj
settled a city with German law and, possibly, he also began the con¬
struction of a brick castle. Moreover, he extended the properties of Oporo¬
wscy by demesne of
Służewo
located in
Kujawy.
It was possible because of the
marriage with
Krystyna
from
Służewo, Pomian
coat of arms. This matrimony
raised the possibility for the descendants of the province governor of
Łęczyca
to make a career in the land hierarchies of
Kujawy
and become a multi-prov¬
ince family.
The third chapter entitled Primate
Władysław
of
Oporów
and his broth¬
ers. Generation of the sons of the province governor
Mikołaj
pertains to the
activity of the sons of
Mikołaj
from
Oporów:
Deputy Chancellor of the Treas¬
ury of the Kingdom of Poland, a bishop of
Włocławek,
and then an archbishop
of
Gniezno - Władysław,
castellan of
Brzeziny-
Stefan from Chodowo, castel¬
lan of
Brzeziny - Mikołaj
from
Miłonice,
province governor of
Inowrocław
-
Bogusław
from
Służewo,
province governor of
Łęczyca - Piotr
from
Oporów

and Jan from
Goślub.
Most of them obtained high posts in central administra¬
tion, Polish Church or land hierarchy of
Łęczyca
and
Inowrocław.
Good edu¬
cation was conductive to the clerical careers of Oporowscy, especially in the
Church and offices. Strengthening of the family position was possible by vir¬
tue of a consistent policy of supporting kings from the Jagiellonian dynasty.
Important position of Oporowscy was also gained through their marriages
with partners descending from magnate s families of similar rank. The nepo¬
tism of the primate
Władysław Oporowski
allowed his brothers and neph¬
ews to receive income from bishop s property, begin ecclesiastical studies and
careers. In the home town of
Oporów,
owing to the primate, a magnificent
Gothic castle, lasting to the present day, was built and a Pauline monastery
was founded.
In the last, fourth chapter entitled Careers of Oporowscy in the second half
of the XV and beginnings of the
XVI c
.
I discussed the activity of the sons of prov¬
ince governor of
Łęczyca, Piotr
from
Oporów
-
Deputy Chancellor of Treas¬
ury and bishop of
Włocławek, Andrzej,
province governor of
Brześć
-
Jan and
castellan of
Brześć - Mikołaj
and the sons of the two latter, until the reign
of
Sigismund
I the Old. The mentioned
Piotr
from
Oporów,
province gover¬
nor of
Łęczyca,
was one of the most important leaders of the political camp
of
Casimir
Jagiellon
during the Thirteen Years War. As a result of transactions
with his brothers he concentrated in his hands the family nest in
Oporów
together with the castle which allowed his descendants to keep the name
of Oporowscy. Apart from hereditary possessions in the region of
Łęczyca,
the financial basis of the family s activity in the second half of the XV
с
and
in the
XVI
с
were formed by crown lands obtained through the kingly good¬
will, especially the
starosty
of
Kruszwica
in
Kujawy,
in the years
1466-
1572
remaining constantly in the possession of this family, duties of
Brześć
Kujawski
and other incomes. However, it was already in the second half of the
XVI
с
that the political role and financial status
ofthat
family were lost. The
reasons for this downfall included: increase in the number of family mem¬
bers and the division of property, the end of church careers of some of the
Oporowscy high costs of public activity and daughters dowries and, finally,
the change in the orientation of the foreign policy of the Jagiellonian dynasty
as a result of which the dignitaries of
Małopolska
achieved domination again.
