OSKAR kolberg
(1814-1890)
enriched Polish culture and
science with an invaluable set of resources; he planned
and realized an extensive programme of folkloric and ethno¬
graphic research. He is the author of the multi-volume work
entitled
Lud. Jego zwyczaje, sposób życia, mowa, podania,
przysłowia, obrzędy, gusła, zabawy, pieśni, muzyka i tańce
[The People: Their Customs, Way of Life, Speech, Folktales,
Proverbs, Rites, Witchcraft, Games, Songs, Music and Dan¬
ces] and a large archive of manuscripts, which presents the
condition of

9th century folk culture of the Commonwealth
from the time before the partitions. His works illustrate how
this culture was diverse and abounding at that time. No other
European country possesses such material in this discipline,
from this time and on such a scale. The archive of
Oskar Kol¬
berg
has been used for almost
150
years by ethnologists,
folklorists and ethnomusicologists.
Oskar Kolberg
was raised in the beginning of the
1
9th cen¬
tury according to the tenets of classical Enlightenment. As a
young composer influenced by the Romantic movement, he
became fascinated with folk songs. Later, he dedicated his
life to the
Positivist
idea of the organic work by collecting
the material for Polish science. His talent, musical educa¬
tion, determination and unusual skill to get into contact
with folk artists allowed him to write down thousands of me¬
lodies by ear, and to transfer their ephemeral beauty to fu¬
ture generations of scientists and folk culture enthusiasts.

Kolberg was
aware that folk culture was an inherent part of
national culture. Driven by those reflections, he came up
with a plan of complex research and published its outcomes
in regional monographs focusing on ethnographic and folklo-
ristic descriptions.
In the years
1857-1890
Kolberg edited and published
thirty three volumes: a monographic set of ballads and thirteen
regional monographs. Later, in the years
1964-2013,
other
monographs and supplements to the
1
9th century volumes
were published on the basis of his archive, which includes the
results of Kolberg s fieldwork, notes of his collaborators and
notes from literature. Moreover,
Dzieła wszystkie
[The Com¬
plete Works] includes Kolberg s correspondence, his musi¬
cal compositions and texts published in addition to
Lud
[The
People]. For a better orientation of Kolberg s legacy this
book includes the index of all volumes of
Dzieła wszystkie.
The present volume is an outline of the biography of
Oskar
Kolberg. Thus, it contains the most important facts
from Kolberg s life, the description of the environment in
which he was raised as well as the development of his atti¬
tude towards the importance of folk culture. Moreover, this
volume includes Kolberg s research programme, originally
published in
1865,
as well as the description of its realiza¬
tion. In addition the content of his monographs is discussed,
especially its political and economic determinants. Kolberg
was an educated musician and his compositions were popu¬
lar among people at his day. He was also a highly regarded
musical writer and
co
-editor of
Encyklopedia powszechna
[The Universal Encyclopaedia] published in the mid-
1
9th cen¬
tury. However, for the next generations he has been known,
most of all, as the author of
Lud.
His most considerable
achievement is the documentation of material, social and spi¬
ritual culture of the country in a period of great changes. Since,
at that time, the country s transformation became natural,
mainly because of the abolishing of serfdom. Kolberg was
conducting his field research at a time when traditional ele-

of culture co-existed with new ones. Moreover, he pre¬
sented interdependences of the culture of peasants, gentle¬
men and towns people, as well as relations between Polish
and Ukrainian folklore, which occurred especially in the
area of ethnic borderlands. Kolberg was a man of wide inte¬
rests, and his ability to document musical folklore is im¬
pressive. His accomplishment is invaluable not only because
of the number of collected melodies, but also because of his
level of accuracy.
Volumes of
Lud
and
Obrazy etnograficzne
(Ethnographic
Accounts] as well as the Kolberg archive with manuscripts,
which are published under the common title
Dzieła wszyst¬
kie,
are major achievements of the Polish humanities of the

9th century. By being continuously useful to many branches
of scholarship, they give evidence to his enduring legacy and
personal achievements.
