Summary
Polish-born generals and admirals in the Russian Army in
1914-1917
Poles who chose an officer career in the Russian Army were driven by the fol¬
lowing motives: living standards, family traditions and patriotism (the dream of
sword/dream of independence).
Despite good opinions about Poles as a brave nation, our compatriots were
reluctantly seen in the Russian officers corps. Russians were afraid that military
knowledge which Poles gained than could be used against Russia as it was a case in
January Upraising where the commanders were graduates from the Russian Mili¬
tary Academies:
Zygmunt Padlewski, Zygmunt Sierakowski
and a prominent officer
Romuald Traugutt.
In order to attempt to become an officer, even a reserve officer, it was needed to
obtain from the regimental commander or the district military chief a loyalty and
law-abidingness guarantee in writing.
According to secret instructions from
1864, 1865
and
1874,
officers of Roman
Catholic confession (wieroispowiedanii) could not serve in the engineering troops.
They could not be authorizing officers, or treasures and were not allowed to work
in a department of armament of individual units. It was forbidden for them to hold
higher positions in military districts. Moreover, they were not allowed to hold posi¬
tions of district military chiefs in the following provinces: Warsaw, Vilnius and Kiev,
and were not admitted to manage military railway institutions in the whole empire.
Poles faced huge impediments at officers promotions. In
1888,
a regulation on
Catholic vacancy was in force which allowed to promote only
1%
of Roman Cath¬
olic confession officers from
10%
of all Catholic Poles. Poles, in favorable circum¬
stances, without graduating from military academies and protection could achieve
the rank of colonel.
Despite huge difficulties, officers of Polish origin achieved high positions in
the Russian Army. Their path to get prominent positions and ranks was much more
difficult than their peers
-
Russians, or Germans. All these restrictions and limits
which were used against Poles resulted from concerns about Poles loyalty. Poles-
Catholics had a total ban on studying in the Nicholas Academy of General Staff.
It was a huge impediment to the officer s career. Graduates of this most important
military university played a significant role in the army, they held key positions.
Poles avoided this regulation by changing confession to Protestant or Orthodox.
Despite many difficulties but thanks to innate abilities, hard work and resource¬
fulness or even superiors kindness, officers of Polish origins received referrals from
the home unit which allowed them to take an exam and they had successfully passed
difficult entrance exams (there was a huge sifting of candidates) to the Academy of
Summary
General Staff. They mostly graduated in a student s group marked as the Category I.
Later in the service they obtained high positions.
Initially
24
generals were selected who had Polish origins and graduated from
the Nicholas Academy of General Staff. During the World War I they held high posi¬
tions and played an important role in the Russian Army. From among the graduates
only two Catholics were found in a list from
1914.
They were featured in the list
only because they graduated from the Academy of General Staff before the ban of
studying for Catholics was introduced. Officers of Polish origins who were gradu¬
ates from the Academy of General Staff were much more numerous. Research on
this topic has been still conducted.
Eventually concise biographies of

rear-admirals and vice-admirals in the Russian Army in
1914-1917
have been elabo¬
rated. Archival materials to the publication were obtained during

month stay in
the archives and libraries of Moscow and St. Petersburg.
