Monastery, the informative value of the notations, Slavonian words and expressions.
The present paper deals with the issue of the circulation of the old
Romanian books (handwritten and printed) in the Northern Dobrudja area,
especially on the surface of the Tulcea County, starting from the scientific
value of the cultural heritage consisting of books preserved in this area, both
in the laic and religious institutions, but also in the private collections.
The object of this study is to identify and to describe

editions of

copies of old Romanian books
(1643-1830)
as well as

manuscripts, as a
result of our research over the years, regarding the identification of the
localities which still keep old Romanian books and also, the effective
interpretation of the heritage that laic institution, churches and Northern
Dobrudja monasteries own.
Because of the passing of time and the hardships of the centuries,
because of the long usage of books which consequently ended in the wear and
tear of the books and because of the fact that cult books written with Slavic
letters were replaced with Latin written ones, the old books have been
neglected and partially doomed to disappearance. Because of these reasons, it

should be emphasized that reconstructing the circulation of the old Romanian
books in the
Northern
Dobrudja can only be done partially as the in facto books
are not vey numerous. The first manuscripts and printed books, as well as
many of those which appeared in the previous periods, have disappeared due
to many causes. However, research which solely focused on the circulation of
Romanian books, are very few. The description of the editions and copies,
with their particularities, has led to the realization of this reference book
(catalog) of old Romanian books from Tulcea County, similar reference books
already existing in other regions of the country.
For a better understanding of the local phenomenon, its distinctive
aspects, in the first chapter of the paper, Northern Dobrudja Spirituality.
Historical frame there is a brief presentation of the geographic area as well as
the history of Dobrudja, especially of the
1417-1877
period when the region
was under Turkish ruling. Regardless of that fact, the relationships between
the Romanians from Dobrudja and the Romanians from the left hand side of
the Danube border continued throughout the centuries. In the second part of
this chapter, reference is made to the Romanian culture from the Northern
Dobrudja. The existence of the Romanian churches, at first made of wood and
then of wall in the Northern Dobrudja villages, even from the 17th century
represented a way and a major factor for the circulation of the books in the
region. Next to the church, the role of the school and of the written culture
developed in this area is equally important for the need of spreading books
and textbooks.
In the II chapter, Old Romanian Books in Northern Dobrudja, it is said
that the editions from Moldavia had a more intense circulation in the
Northern part of the region rather than on the territory of the Constanta
County. Considering the

copies of old Romanian books, which are still
kept in collections in Tulcea, the situation of the provinces is as it follows:
42.52%
are books printed by the Moldavian printing houses followed by
28.04%
of books printed abroad. The books printed in Walachia are
21.02%
and the least,
8.42%
come from Transylvania printing centres. Moreover, some
books kept in Northern Dobrudja come from Walachia through a Moldavian
channel and others circulated from Moldavia (they were printed there) in
Transylvania, then in Walachia and from here back in Dobrudja. In the
Northern Dobrudja monasteries s patrimony, there are the most numerous
copies which were printed and then circulated in Moldavia:

Lăcrămioara Manea
Dobrudja started in the 17th century, since when some of them were printed
and continue to exist up to now. The oldest of them are: Varlaam s
Cazania
(Iaşi,
1643)
and the Bible (Bucharest,
1688),
a copy of each of them in the
collections of Tulcea Eco-Museum Research Institute and of
Celíc Dere
Monastery.
The
ΠΙ
chapter, Northern Dobrudja localities which still keeping
collections of old Romanian books represents the nucleus of the paper,
actually it is the catalog of the collections from Tulcea accompanied by their
history and the current institutions which own them. The most wide spread
edition from Tulcea County is Octoih from
Buda,
1811,
from which
8
copies
kept until nowadays have been identified at
Cocoş
Monastery. This edition
circulated intensely in Northern Dobrudja if one considers that all the copies
from the monastery come from Tulcea parishes.
In addition, as a research method, the catalog complies the International
Standard of the Bibliographical Description of Ancient Books (ISBD(A)), as
well as the desire to enrich the known information with footnotes which bring
forward not just the copies but also the editions. The bibliographic areas are
general notes (from the edition) and the specific notes (from the copy): the
description of the binding, the preservation state, ex-libris and notes, their
circulation.
The Tulcea Eco-Museum Research Institute collection includes
55
titles
in
61
copies,

of which are double or more copies of the same edition.
Chronologically speaking,
10
copies date back from the 17th century,
21
volumes were printed in the 18th century and
30
old Romanian books belong
to the
1801-1830
printing period. Here, three neo-Greek volumes, printed in
Vienna, have been introduced; they have been considered as equally
important as to join the rest of the other old Romanian books and which have
not been introduced in the monumental paper: Old Romanian Bibliography
(1508-1830).
These are books signed by cultural personalities or printed at
their expense, which equally belong to our history and culture from the
Phanariot period, but which travelled through Europe, some copies being also
kept in the great libraries of the world. The editions are:

A small number of books, of unknown circulation, are kept in Dobrudja
in the possession of private people, books of an undoubted historical valued
due to their age and notes. The priest Neculai Felix Lucian s collection gathers
among others, quite a rare book, Psalter printed at
Movilău
(the Republic of
Moldavia) in
1796
in
Mihail
Strilbiţchi s
printing house.
In the IV chapter, Contributions to the Old Romanian Bibliography,
bibliographical contributions which appeared throughout time are gathered
together. Besides corrections and addenda, four printings from the second half
the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century have been drawn to the
public s attention. They are of a great historical value themselves but also for
the history of the Romanian culture from the Phanariot period. These are the
papers of foreign authors, original or translated in Greek by scholars from the
Noble Academies from
Iaşi
and Bucharest and at the same time, dedicated to
the Princes from Romanian Countries by the editors or the translators:

Such textbooks translated or compiled
after the writings of great philosophers or scientists of those times, intensely
circulated in the upper classes of Europe.
Among the manuscripts mentioned in the V chapter, Romanian and
Slavonian Manuscripts in collections from Tulcea, the travelling journal of
Prince Nicolae Caradja should be pointed out (Description
d excursion en
sud de
l Allemagne et en Suisse écrite par Nicolas de Caradja,
[1865-1869]),
manuscript
which was
a collection
item of the great bibliographer and lover of books
Constantin
I. Karadja
(1889-1950).
In the VI chapter, Considerations regarding the circulation of old
Romanian books in Northern Dobrudja area, the author analyzes the problem
of the circulation of old books from the view point of the ones kept, starting
from the region and the printing centres they came from

foreign and
Romanian printing centres). Additionally, our research came across valuable

notes with

value, the oldest of which date
back to the middle of the 17th century and the second half of this century.
Relying on the numerous notes from the copies from Tulcea, certain
conclusions could have been drawn regarding the circulation the old
Romanian books in the Northern Dobrudja.
In the next chapters, there was emphasized the informative value of the
notes from a historic, geographic, social and cultural view point as well as
their worth regarding the history of the Romanian vocabulary. Besides the old
Slavic words and Slavonicisms, other interesting cases have been pointed out,
lexically speaking: some Romanian words of other origins, terms with other
forms than the ones from the RLD (Romanian Academy, Romanian Language
Dictionary,

and even
words which do not appear in the RLD.
The last chapter, Conclusions, includes general considerations, results
from the analysis of the research. From the source of origin of the collections,
there were several stages regarding the circulation of the old books: the
circulation during the Turkish ruling, but many books and manuscripts were
destroyed during the

Russian-Austrian-Turkish wars and during the
Circassian thefts; the circulation after the Independence War
1877-1878,
due to
the construction of monasteries, the development of the education, the
consolidation of the economic, social, cultural and political ties with the
Romanians across the Danube, a period from which few 18th century books
but more 19th century books still made it up to nowadays; a new,
contemporary and still alive circulation, starting from the second half of the
20th century, influenced by the establishment of libraries and museums in their
haste to create their collections, concentrations or funds transfers, all of which
enriched considerably the Northern Dobrudja heritage.
Considering the small numbers of kept books dating back from 17th
-
18th
century
(13
and
40
copies, respectively), and those entering the laic and
religious collections from Tulcea, rather late, no firm conclusion can be drawn
regarding their number and circulation throughout these centuries. However,
the relatively large number of the printed books in
1801-1830
kept in Northern
Dobrudja, especially
161
copies described and the thousands of books printed
after
1830
in churches and monasteries, all show that the Romanians from
Dobrudja, despite the Turkish ruling, had economic and cultural ties with the
other Romanian provinces, especially with Moldavia.

It was observed that the localities where the books were spread and
from where old Romanian books at
Cocoş
Monastery were concentrated
especially in the North, North-East and West of the County, areas near the
Danube intensely inhabited by the Romanians. The central area, on the
plateau, was inhabited throughout the centuries by the Turkish people and the
Ukrainians. Also, there is no certain proof that in the settlements from the
Danube Delta, there is such an intense circulation of the Romanian books, the
Danube channels always being quite difficult to cross.
In Northern Dobrudja, relatively few manuscripts and old Romanian
books have been kept in comparison to other historical areas. This reality can
be easily explained with the help of the history of the place itself, the difficult
Turkish ruling, the hardships daunting the Romanians from this part of the
world almost in every historical period, and with the help of the idea that
there was no local typographic activity up to
1879,
after the Independence
War.
