Summary

Otona
Grebenca
v
Slovenskem etnografskem
muzeju
(Depicted Traces of National Identity: The Collection
of Drawings by Students of Professor Oton
Grebene
at the Slovenian Ethnographic Mu¬
seum) brings together the findings of ethnology, especially its museological specializa¬
tion, facts from Slovenian history, and the methodological apparatus developed within
the sociology of nationalism. It is distinguished by broadly sketched horizons and the
experience of museum work when it engages with museum tasks yet to be carried out: that
is, the inventoried but still unstudied collection of drawings created during the interwar
period by students at the technical secondary school in Ljubljana under the watchful eye
of Professor Oton
Grebene. Grebene
was an enthusiastic collector of everyday rural ob¬
jects. They inspired him in the design of modern furniture, and served as objects to train
the eyes and hands of his students. The themes of the drawings (involving aesthetically
designed and ornamented objects) are part of the still unsystematically studied national
style. Studying its
raison
d être
in the context of symbols, ethnomyths, and stereotypes
170
Upodobljene sledi narodne identitete
necessitated circulating between empirical material and theoretical reflections. The au¬
thor sought a suitable tool for shedding light on an apparently minor cultural fact from
the broad field of cultural heritage, which has been a code of cultural cohesion and differ¬
entiation for at least at least two centuries already, even a weapon in power relations that
regulate and help shape the life of institutionalized human communities
—
from the local
to the transnational level. Cultural equality and otherness are constructed on this basis,
as well as a series of otherness in chronotopes of human communities.
Within this broad issue, this volume is limited to the folk segment of culture, which
was raised to a symbol of identity at the national level and can be instrumentalized as an
ethnomyth and stereotype. Of course, this does not occur on its own, but is created by
interpretive readings.
Γη
this process, the premise of the collection is defined as a repre¬
sentational system or visual medium for revealing symbols, ethnomyths, and stereotypes
of national identity.
The central issue is addressed by the questions of why and how the visualized trace
of (folk) culture can become a national symbol at all, why and how a national symbol can
become an ethnomyth and stereotype, what the relationship between the symbol, ethno¬
myth, and stereotype is like, and in whose and what kind of interest this symbolic lan¬
guage is constituted. The answers in separate discourses about man as a symbolic animal
(Cassirer),
about culture as a symbolic network (Geertz), as a dynamic symbolic system
(Bourdieu, etc.), as a communication system, and so on would be simply be too brief for
these questions.
With regard to the dilemmas about what is ethnic between the primordial and instru¬
mental paradigm, and about an ethnic group between the kinship and modern
construc¬
tivist
interpretation, the author takes an intermediate or soft
constructivist
perspective.
Nationalism, ethnic awareness, and national identity are not only a matter of construction
and choice, but also actual historical and symbolic cultural attributes. The past simply
cannot be completely constructed; it can only be selectively exploited
...
the creators of
tradition have available a relatively broad and at the same time limited selection of mate¬
rial from which they can choose when creating the image of a people. This view ends in
the discussion of historical ethnosymbolism (Anthony Smith): what gives nationalism its
power are the myths, memories, traditions, and symbols of ethnic heritages and the ways
in which a popular
¡¿ving
past has
heen,
and can he, rediscovered and reinterpreted ; as in
identity, its driving force is cohesive and differential.
Outside of this, it is also impossible to understand the function of museums, which
under the aegis of modern states emerged from the nineteenth century onwards as na¬
tional institutions and thereby an ideological apparatus of the state. The normal and
effective history of museums says much about the fact that museums function as co-
creators and re-creators of ideology or socially relevant knowledge. In European eth¬
nographic museums, a weJl-grounded national ideology was produced and reproduced
through an aestheticized principle of collecting, exhibiting, and studying invented (in
the sense of constructed) folk culture. Folk culture was a link in the national cultural
grammar, whereby the reduction of true culture was at least twofold: with the interfer-

enee
of choosing and the transfer into another context
—
in a museum. There remained
aestheticized types, series, and, finally, national style.
Stereotypification is a process characteristic of the creation of (ethnic) style; the au¬
thor appropriately went beyond the merely socio-psychological definition of stereotypes
when she drew attention to the manners of their primarily visual representation, which
are always historically and socially contextualized; therefore stereotypes, regardless of
the fact that they are based on a relatively stable judgment, are subject to reinterpreta-
tion and the struggle of meanings and values, fluid comparisons between the identities
of ourselves and other symbolic inclusions and exclusions. In constituting and defending
national identities, stereotypes have an important signifying function, they are part of
their cultural topographies and symbolic geographies, they are nurtured through cultural
representations of the other, and the relatively persistent characteristics offered by ethnic
myths in their readiest form serve as a significant source for them. In conflicting relation¬
ships that demand stability and differentiation, they offer legitimacy for the present and
future, regardless of their biological (i.e., genealogical) or cultural (i.e., ideological) basis.
The theoretical hypothesis of the nationalization of folk culture would have remained
too unproductive had it not been supplemented with findings on who its main agents
and addressees were. Starting in the nineteenth century, these individuals came from
educated circles (artists, collectors, clergy, and teachers as the bearers of education). For
the creation and functioning of national culture it was necessary to have consensus
about its normative level (e.g., a common language, historical awareness, territory, region,
lifestyle characteristics, ethnic cultural heritage, etc.); its content is some sort of com¬
mon denominator by which the majority of its members identify themselves. Identifi¬
cation is enabled by socialization/enculturation and gradual internalization (under the
influence of schools and other national foundations or institutions of the state apparatus).
The Slovenian processes and comparable national endeavors in Europe therefore had two
processes in common: standardization of the population and ethnic endeavors to obtain
political autonomy in their own country or (e.g., in prewar Yugoslavia) to preserve and
protect their ethnic interests.
The
Grebene
collection as well as certain other collections at the Slovenian Eth¬
nographic Museum were not created through professional motives. An important back¬
ground to their origin is biographical, in the sense of the individual motives of the col¬
lectors cultural habitus. A special distinction of the collection is that it is appropriately
documented and, in comparison to other related collections in the museum, it has greater
documentary value, especially from the point of view of museum policy or professional
orientation before the Second World War, which was distinctly oriented toward confirma¬
tion of ethnic character and ethnic identity.
The Ethnographic museum (founded in
1923)
was the first ethnological institution,
understaffed, spatially cramped, with poor material support; it constantly struggled to
survive
—
probably also because it (at least declaratively) supported the ideas that circu¬
lated among some of the members of the educated bourgeoisie. The concept of a national
style did not grow out of some kind of perfected ethnographic perspective, but from
172
Upodobljene sledi narodne identitete
its decontextualized, (stereo)typified knowledge. The main practitioners of the national
style were not academy-trained experts, but amateur ethnographers. Some rank Sic,
Karlovšek,
and
Grebene
among ethnographers, which means that amateur and profes¬
sional collectors, occasional and serious writers, teachers, and university-educated ex¬
perts were characterized as scholars. In general it is true for this period that the popular-
izers of the national style were primarily amateurs, also at a completely practical level:
in order to preserve ethnic motifs in contemporary design for architecture and the or¬
namentation of useful items, and in this form to indirectly strengthen ethnic/national
consciousness.
The visual analysis of a collection contextualized in this way was carried out at three
levels: representative meaning,
iconographie
symbolism, and iconological symbolism.
For this purpose, quantitative
(iconographie)
and qualitative (iconological) analysis were
used. Their origin and representational artistry were taken into account, especially or¬
namentation, of the objective world of rural culture, which relies on ethnic elements or
ethno-mythology. For her interpretation, the author relied on Roland Barthes and
Erwin
Panofsky.
One of the major findings of the study is that, based on analyzing this collection, it is
not possible to assert that everything that applies to the sociality of human collectives and
their identities is an ideological construct, concept, or invention, but rather that it primar¬
ily involves various models and opportunities that the actors in national movements used
on the basis of a cultural repository. In similar living conditions of European peoples (tak¬
ing into account their political and/or cultural genesis), elements of the predominant type
of culture (i.e., rural or peasant culture) were in the foreground; these functioned well in
inward unification and outward differentiation, in comparisons with others (e.g., at large
exhibitions) or in persisting in and defending one s own ethnic interests. The reduced and
aestheticized folk/rural concept was certainly an element of the Slovenian mythomotor
during the interwar period, and of course also a stereotype (in provenience and motifs).
An interdisciplinary-based study like this is an important supplement to the findings
of all disciplines that serve to shed light on this issue: to sociology and historiography,
which for some time have exceeded their disciplinary field boundaries, whereby ethnolo¬
gy also traced out its line of demarcation from them in the past, it primarily offers insight
into social relations and the importance of the cultural facts that helped create Slovenian
ethnic consciousness and strengthened the sense of ethnic belonging. In addition, the
concrete issues could not have been studied without taking into account the relationships
with concepts in art history and with contemporary analyses of the visual. It has enriched
ethnology through its results, which are an important contribution not only to the im¬
age of its orientations in the first decades of the twentieth century and are also important
from an international comparative perspective, but also serves as a reminder of the power
of the theoretical and methodological tool that modern sociology and humanities offer.
This is exactly what is connecting various disciplines in the most productive form today.
