THE FIRST MEDIEVAL RUSSIAN PRINCES
-
SAINTS
(IMAGES, SYMBOLISM, TYPOLOGY)
Summary
The conversion of the medieval Slavs into Christianity and the time of Christianization
in the Slavic national cultures led to the formation of the community of
Slávia
Orthodoxa.
This period is characterized by increased creative productivity and intimate look at
oneself and one s own history through the prism of common cultural ideas. Breaking
with paganism and seeking a foothold in Christian values, the medieval Russian bookman
was attracted by the aura of Christian holiness and splendour of the royal purple. Thus
he stared building a literary pantheon of his first Christian rulers
-
Princess
Olga,
Prince
Vladimir, Boris and
Gleb.
Their commemoration illustrates the aspiration of the Eastern
Slavs for Christian self-identification.
The diachronic look at the questions of royal hagiology shows that rulers-saints and
the holy texts dedicated to them have drawn the attention of the scholars from the dawn
of Palaeo-Slavistics. With some temporary dips, the interest in them has been maintained
to this day through the considerable scholarly production by Russian, Bulgarian and other
researchers.
The observations on the early medieval Russian royal holiness of Princess
Olga
and
Prince Vladimir, princes Boris and
Gleb
led to results in the following areas: First, the
question of construction of the royal paradigm and the sanctity of the first Russian princes
-
saints; Second, the question of the poetics, genre typology and the genesis of the literary
works dedicated to these saints; Third, the typology of their images in the literary context
of the Eastern Orthodox community.
In search of the dimensions of the early princely holiness, we traced explicit and
implicit Old Testament, New Testament and hagiographical models, some of which un¬
noticed by earlier researchers. The Bible has a very strong presence in the Russian Pri¬
mary Chronicle
{Povest
vremennykh let) not only manifested in specific authoritative
quotes from it, but also through references to biblical imagery and archetypes. The book
of the great codes
-
to paraphrase the definition of
N.
Frye
-
the Bible, stirs images and
allusions, and influences the formation of the poetics of the chronicles, hagiographical
writings, hymnography and rhetorical texts about the first Christian rulers of Kievan
Rus.
Their figures have been seen through iconic biblical archetypes:
Olga as
the Queen of
Sheba
,
Sarah
,
Rahab and Mary; Vladimir as Jacob, David
,
Solomon and Paul, Vladimir
and Yaroslav
—
as David and Solomon; Boris and
Gleb
-
as Abel and Joseph suffering
from his brothers, the innocent children of Bethlehem pursued by King Herod, the cruci¬
fied Christ, and others.
In the paradigm of the ruler saint, the hagiologic models of the saints, equal to the
Apostles, the saints
-
educators, and the martyr saints are the ones that help generating
the semantic core of the saintly image: In the case of St.
Olga such
model is St. Helena,
for St. Vladimir s veneration
-
the apostles-like saints such as St.
Constantine
the Great

and Bulgarian prince St. Boris-Mikhail, for St. Vladimir and his son Yaroslav

apostles and educators
SS
Cyril and Methodius; in the case of
SS
Boris and
Gleb
—
the

-
martyrs St. George and St. Demetrius, St. Stephen, St. Wenceslaus I etc. These
observations revealed the common key in the poetics of respectively three types of holi¬
ness in texts of
Slávia
Orthodoxa: First, women-renovators, equal to the Apostles; Sec¬
ond, rulers equal to the Apostles, forerunners in faith and spiritual illumination; Third,
the rulers martyrs.
Olga
and Vladimir are the first Christian rulers of Kievan
Rus.
In all the works on
Prince Vladimir (with exception of hagiographical narratives) a connection has been es¬
tablished between the deeds of
Olga as a
harbinger of Christianity in the Russian lands
and Vladimir as her follower. A similar relation has also been created between Vladimir
of
Rus as
the one who brought Christianity into the Russian lands and his son Yaroslav,
who continued their Christianization. Prince Vladimir was also seen in a close connection
to princes Boris and
Gleb
not just as a father attached to his favourite sons, but also as
suzerain to his vassals, as the
baptiser
to the first canonized saints. With their tragic death
and refusal to take up arms against their brother, Boris and
Gleb
showed the conscious
choice and the free will in the Christian self-sacrifice, the respect for the royal hierarchy
and seniority, and the ultimate rejection of the princely strife.
In the holy pantheon of Kievan
Rus,
Boris and
Gleb, Olga
and Vladimir occupy a
central place, setting the paradigm of royal holiness. In the historiography of Kievan
Rus
the common direction of their spiritual impact became apparent in the nature and in the
similarities of the interpretation of their images in Old Russian literature. In the cases of
Princess
Olga,
Prince Vladimir, Boris and
Gleb,
Prince Yaroslav there is not only a dy¬
nastic relations, but also interconnectedness in their literary representation. Most works
dedicated to them
-
chronicles, sermons, hagiographical and hymnographical writings
belong to the earliest stage of Old Russian literature. These texts are part of the larger
genre formats such as the collection of chronicles, liturgical preaching and the Prologue
(Synaxarion). They are united in their aim to glorify the royal holiness and to adorn the
Riurik s dynasty with the nimbus of those chosen by God.
The analysis of the poetics and the genesis of the eulogies in
Povest
vremennykh
let dedicated to Princess
Olga
of
969,
to Prince Vladimir of
1015,
to Princes Yaroslav
and Vladimir of
1037,
and to Boris and
Gleb
of
1015
shows their common imagery
and stylistics and demonstrates their relation to the rhetorical genre. Eulogies for the
four rulers-saints rely on similar structures, patterns and formulas. Thus the idea of
Dmitry Likhachev that these six works create a kind a textual community, described
as The account about the initial dissemination of Christianity in the Russian lands,
was supported by further specific textological observations on five of them. The new
points that this study introduces is the hypothesis about the use of
Klimenťs
of Okhrid
rhetorical works in the compilation of these texts,
-
namely, drawing on themes, imagery,
patterns, compositional models and rhetorical techniques of his work, which in turn are
undoubtedly based on the Byzantine tradition.
Eulogies in medieval Slavic literatures inherited genre typology of Byzantine rhetoric
practice. Rhetorical texts in Byzantine and Old Bulgarian literature are rich in images
and symbols of light, luminosity, and light-radiation. We find them in classic Byzantine
models such Akathistos hymn to the Virgin Mary, Hymn to Christ by Gregory Nazianzen

alleged source
—
Kliment s sermons. The observations presented here shed new light on
the reception of Kliment s works in Kievan
Rus,
and in a broader frame
-
on the role of
his works as a building block of the literatures of
Slávia
Orthodoxa.
The overall analysis highlighted common semantic code, and hence
—
a common
approach to the poetics of the literary presentation of the first dynasty of Christians rulers
in Kievan
Rus.
The idea of
sanctification
of the Russian statehood and confession is
embodied in highly artistic forms. Texts dedicated to
Olga,
Vladimir, Boris and
Gleb,
are mapped within the semantic triad light
-
sanctity
-
the world in which the Russian
lands are correlated to the Christian oikoumene. The aesthetic inventions of the scribe,
who worked at the dawn of Old Russian literature, recharged the traditional poetic tools
of Byzantine encomiastic style and the rhetoric style of St.
Kliment
applying them on
original Russian historical topics.
Old Russian holy images of princes follow the typology of Christian royal holiness,
whose model was set by Byzantium, introducing at the same time original aspects in
hagiological imagination of
Slávia
Orthodoxa. These characteristics become especially
apparent when the
sanctification
of the Old Russian, Old Bulgarian and Serbian rulers and
the
topoi
related to the royal sanctity are compared.
I would like to believe that this study deepens the understanding of biblical
archetypes and hagiographical symbolism, which were fundamental to medieval literary
poetics and literary practice in Kievan
Rus,
and that it also throws additional light on the
royal paradigm in the Byzantine- Slavic cultural commonwealth.
