Summary
The monograph: Ukrainian Donbass. Faces of regional identity
was devoted to the reflection on an unifying role of a national discourse
in Ukraine in the context of its regional diversity. The main objectives
of work focus on the research on the
Donbas,
understood as historical
region, and its contemporary perceptions within Ukrainian society. Un¬
doubtedly, Ukrainian part of the Donets Coal Basin is a region which in
the public opinion strictly embodies some kind of incompatibility with the
version of Ukrainian culture recognized as a national in the official dis¬
course. In Ukraine as well as elsewhere, the semantic field of
Donbas
defi¬
nition, which is the abbreviation of the Russian name of basin
-
Donetskii
Bassein,
extends to a distinct cultural space, which characterizes not so
much the part of Ukraine, but the Ukrainian-Russian border. Unmistak¬
able,
Donbas
is the symbol of these Ukrainian cultural resources, which
are widely regarded as the aberration resulting from long-term interaction
with Russia.
The first chapter, entitled Ukraine
—
the state of regions in search of
national identity was intended as a starting point for the further analy¬
sis of the place occupied by
Donbas
in the Ukrainian national discourse
and the resonance of its regional characteristics in the Ukrainian society.
The emphasis here has been placed on the examination of the content of
the Ukrainian national discourse, assuming that certain method of presen¬
ting national history greatly influences the development of attitudes and
identity within a society. Basically, since
1991
in Ukraine two models
of presenting national history can be distinguished. One of them refers
to the traditional Ukrainian historiography, while the second one remains
a modified variant of the Soviet scheme of Ukrainian history. On the basis
of these models, two, extremely different, projects of Ukraine i.e. col¬
lections of the ideas about its past, about its civilization, and finally, mu-
303
SUMMARY
tually exclusive future projections are formed. The main objective of the
project corresponding with the traditional scheme of Ukrainian history is
the demand for construction of a modern Ukrainian society on the ethnic
background with a clear and valid breakdown into the dominant titular
ethnos and ethnic minorities. In this variant of the Ukrainian national dis¬
course, Russian-speaking Ukrainians are treated as an object of renation-
alization, as those who have not yet realized their Ukrainess and whose
duty is to catch up the rest of Ukrainian society in its development. Al¬
though, however at the level of everyday life there is no any cultural dis¬
crimination in access to jobs, education, political representation etc., but
the imposition of Russian-speaking Ukrainians Creole condition is fairly
common practice, which radicalizes this discourse in the relatively effec¬
tive way. In the project referring to the history of Ukraine model practiced
by the Soviet school, contrary, the concept of the modern Ukrainian nation
is based on the idea of citizenship, while ethnic and cultural ties rather
belong to the private sphere. Its leitmotiv is
multi
culturalism of Ukraine,
which explains the
Donbas
regional specificities even. In fact, multicultur-
alism is a kind of slogan here, because in so far as in Ukraine representa¬
tives of more than a hundred ethnic groups are living, Ukrainians and Rus¬
sians together constitute
94%
of the Ukrainian population. The slogan of
multiculturalism, however, has a wide acceptance among the vast number
of Ukrainians, for whom Russian is the language of everyday use and
the vision of multicultural Ukraine meets their requirements. At the level
of everyday life such a dichotomy of national discourse is not bothering
anyone s attention. Two formulas of Ukrainess activate in times of politi¬
cal turning point and are successfully used by all parts of the Ukrainian
electoral scene. In the process of formation of the modern society Ukrai¬
nian revealed not only the two above-mentioned projects, but that they are
symbolically regionalized. In the complex regional structure of Ukraine
the two poles are clearly outlined. They are
Donbas
and
Galicia,
in which
and in their mutual opposition aspiring to the nationwide standard regional
identities are generated.
In the remaining chapters, the characteristics of the Donets Coal Basin
region are described. These descriptions are carried out in chronological
order, although the narrative axis focuses on the issues. On the basis of the
historical development of three specific characteristics-phenomena, typi¬
cal of the region, the
Donbas
region is presented. These are the Russian
culture of Ukraine, the miner s culture and the myth of the
Donbas
separa¬
tism. By analyzing the features mentioned, was emphasized this semantic
304
SUMMARY
layer of the concept of region, in which it appears as a set of practices
resulting from the common people living in a particular territory.
Introduced in the second chapter the term Russian culture of Ukraine
refers to that part of the material and spiritual heritage of the Ukrainian
society, which developed in the cultural center of Russian influence and
in Russian language. The essence of this term is the semantic opposition
to the term Russified . This chapter is an attempt to identify the sources
of these phenomena that we can qualify for the concept of Russian culture
of Ukraine in the
Donbas
region with regard to the presence of the Russian
language and blurring the Ukrainian-Russian ethno-cultural border. Par¬
ticularly expressive components of the proposed approach of the
Donbas
region history are impulsive migration processes, which resulted in the
settlement of the territory and the modernization process the late nine¬
teenth and early twentieth century. Formed in the following ethnic struc¬
ture of the region is based on a specific cultural synthesis that Ukrainian
researcher Illia Kononov called Ukrainian-Russian dominant coalition.
Then analyzed was the process of establishing state control over the
Don¬
bas
in terms of the Bolshevik revolution and civil war. The place of the
Donbas
region in the concept of Ukraine forcing by Ukrainian indepen¬
dence movement activists from different political options, was discussed.
And finally, the impact of Soviet policy on interethnic relations in the
region was presented. The last part of this chapter examines the status of
Russian culture of Ukraine in the framework of an independent Ukrai¬
nian state after
1991.
The third chapter focuses on the key issue of social history of the studied
region. The semantic spectrum of concept
—
the miner s culture
—
extends
to the living conditions and the nature of human activity undertaken in the
Donbas
region. It is, therefore, an attempt to use the paradigm of historical
anthropology to explore ways of perceiving reality, axiological systems
and standards regulating social relations that have been, and are close to
the people of the
Donbas
region. The first part of the chapter concerns the
period from the mid-nineteenth century to the Soviet industrialization and
mainly relates the circumstances first industry immigrants settled in which
on the contemporary territory of the
Donbas
region. In the framework of
discussing part the nature of migration issues and forms of settlement was
brought up. A particular phenomenon of the
Donbas
region at the turn of
the ninetieth and twentieth century remains so called hut culture
-
from
the workers huts scattered around the mine or factory, which is a feature
of the environment suspended between urban and rural areas. The
Donbas
305
SUMMARY
region therefore was developing as industrial area, actually devoid of the
elements forming urban network (i.e. schools, libraries, theaters, sports
clubs, etc.). The next section was devoted to the period of Soviet rule and
is an attempt to evaluate it in balanced way. On the one hand, the Soviet
modernization project with housing, universal system of education, access
to healthcare and popularizing the high culture to the masses certainly
raised the
Donbas
region workers standard of living. However, the image
of the Donetsk Coal Basin as a display window of socialism has a propa¬
ganda nature. Even if the queue for housing was moving here faster than
in other regions, and the range of goods in the shops was wider, it resulted
from the favored heavy industry as an economic sector rather than the
Donbas
region. There are many factors in light of which the
Donbas
re¬
gion from the end of the fifties of the twentieth century has the hallmarks
of a typical Soviet province. The evidence of this is even the comparison
the level of investment that the Soviet authorities directed at the moder¬
nization and development of the Donets Coal Basin, with the amount of
capital that engulfed the construction of a new center of the coal industry
in the Urals. The last section of this part of the work focuses on the social
consequences of transition in the
Donbas
region at the turn of the twenti¬
eth and twenty-first centuries. The characteristic features of this process
are: deep social stratification, the release of labor market related to the
necessity of retraining, and the intergenerational transfer of poverty.
The fourth chapter, entitled Separatism
—
autonomy
—
regionalism.
Donbas
place in the new reference system, is an attempt to recapitulate
common, both in Ukraine and beyond its borders, views on separatist ten¬
dencies in the
Donbas
region. In the early nineties, and during the Orange
Revolution, a threat of separatism was one of the most frequently men¬
tioned challenges that could stand in the young Ukrainian state. It is next
to the Crimea,
Donbas
was mentioned as the region emerges from the first
impulse to irredentism towards Russia. In this part of the study two groups
of potential separatist leaders were distinguished: Russian minority and
regional elites. The later term, in light of the social reality of
Donbas,
is
meant first of all the former party and Komsomol nomenclature maintain¬
ing their influence in the region and that part of society which stepped
in political and economic life of the region on the wave of
perestroïka.
The question goes here about the authorities derived from criminal un¬
derworld, who in terms of political and legal expansion of the eighties
and nineties managed to secure a share of the post-Soviet capital. At this
point it has been spread intentions and motivations, which would direct
306
SUMMARY
the representatives of the two groups in the pursuit of a possible secession
of the inhabited by themselves region from the Ukrainian state. It also was
included to assess the degree to which it seems to be a real threat of sepa¬
ratism, which indicated the group could be a carrier. Next, separatism is
considered as critical to the
socio-cultural
realities of independent Ukraine
discourse, in which a form of rebellion Russian speaking Ukrainians be¬
comes real. In this context, separatism is a kind of self-identification myth
of the most strongly represented in the
Donbas
social group, which is in¬
vested outside pale by nation-state paradigm. This approach to the sepa¬
ratism in the
Donbas
region is also an attempt to present the issue of the
relationship between the center and the periphery in a new way. Peripheral
status of the
Donbas
region means here a sense of failure to the Ukrai¬
nian national canon sanctioned by the center. Consequently, separatism is
understood not as an act, but as the idea which symbolically compensates
people of
Donbas
a status of cultural subordination to Kiev.
The characteristics of the region included in the monograph argue that
the standards regulating regional identity in the
Donbas
region are very
strong. At the same time it is a community visibly oriented towards the
state and the nation of Ukraine. This may mean that Ukrainian national
formula forming since
1991
is much more diverse than it is at first glance,
and goes beyond the definitions, which provide both, described above,
variants of the Ukrainian national discourse.
