COURT ACCOUNT BOOKS OF
SIGISMUND
JAGIEŁŁO, DUKE
OF
GŁOGÓW
AND
OPAVA,
GOVERNOR OF SILESIA AND LUSATIA,
FROM THE YEARS
(1493) 1500-1507:
A CRITICAL EDITION OF SOURCES
(Summary)
The presented book is a critical, scientific edition of account books recording every day
running of the court of Prince
Sigismund
Jagiełło,
the son of the King of Poland and Grand
Duke of Lithuania
Casimir F/. (+
1492).
Transcription, i.e. a critical transcript of a text us¬
ing the currently valid system of writing with maximum possible respect to the phonetic
and morphological specifics of the given language, became the predominant methodologi¬
cal approach. Naturally, the rules of transliteration of the original text were applied as well.
Combination of both the approaches results from the complicated language characteris¬
tics of the edited source in which many expressions, phrases or complete sentences could
be found not only in the predominant Latin but also in several other languages (mainly in
Polish, but also in German and even a few were in Hungarian). When the scribes were not
familiar with the appropriate Latin expression, they did not hesitate and used analogic ex¬
pression from their own mother tongue (Polish) or simply used different word which was
commonly used to describe the given phenomenon in their region. All
non
-
Latin words
including family names of persons and nonlatinized names of localities were transliterat¬
ed. On the other hand, the Latin texts were precisely transcribed. The edition includes two
types of elaborate footnotes: Language footnotes reflecting the transcription problems are
in italics
-
they point out scribes' mistakes, revisions and problematic readings, they offer
related comments, etc. The explanatory footnotes serve to determine human settlements
(towns, townlets, and villages), countries, states, geographic formations (rivers, mountain
ranges) and to convert the date formulas into nowadays common form. Persons are iden¬
tified within the Index of Persons. The edition includes also detailed Index of Locations,
Countries and Geographic Names and Subject Index.
Sigismund,
in history known mainly as the King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania
Sigismund
I the Old (+1548), belonged among the princes of the
Jagiełło
dynasty, which
reached one of the peaks of its power around the year
1500.
However,
Sigismund
was in
quite a difficult position at the beginning. The Jagiellos controlled geographically consider¬
able area of Middle and Middle-East Europe and reigned over a number of states
-
Poland,
Lithuania, Hungary and the Bohemian countries, but these were divided among his older
brothers Vladislaus (+
1516),
John Albert
(+1501)
and Alexander (+
1506).
Even the young¬
est of the
Jagiełło
siblings Frederick (+
1503),
who had been quickly climbing up the ladder
of the Church hierarchy, had promising future ahead of him. In short time he became the
Bishop of
Kraków,
Archbishop of
Gniezno
and finally Cardinal. Thus during the last years
of the 15th century it was only the second youngest son
Sigismund
who was slowly becom¬
ing a prince without real prospects to establish his own power base. The thorny question of
provision and power establishment of
a Jagiełło
dynasty member became an issue regular¬
ly discussed during
Jagiełło
family gatherings. Many plans we thought of, but they stayed
only on paper for their fantasticality or even political adventurousness. In
1498
at last came
an offer from the then senior of the dynasty. The offer resulted from the lengthy family
meetings and no less difficult talks with the estates of individual countries.
The King of Bohemia and Hungary first provided his younger brother and his court ref¬
uge in his residence in Hungarian
Buda. In
1499
he granted
Sigismund
a fief of Duchy of
Głogów
in Silesia and in
1501
a fief of Duchy of
Opava
at Moravian-Silesian border, both
the countries were part of the Bohemian Crown.
Sigismund
stayed in the Hungarian me-

tropolis
and enjoyed his brother's hospitality up to the year
1501.
After the death of his
brother John Albert,
Sigismund
tried to gain the Polish throne, however he was not suc¬
cessful
-
at that time the Grand Duke of Lithuania Alexander became the Polish ruler. Af¬
terwards
Sigismund
took up residence in his newly gained Silesian possessions and tried to
acquire at least financial share from his father's inheritance. In
1504
Sigismund's brother
King "Vladislaus appointed him his deputy for the whole North half of the Bohemian state
-
Sigismund
became the Governor of Silesia and Lusatia. The
Jagiełło
Prince tried very hard
to present himself in roles traditionally connected with the image of a good and successful
ruler, thus the heart of his court comprised representatives of prominent Polish and Lithu¬
anian aristocratic families. In
1506,
when yet another of the siblings King Alexander died
unexpectedly,
Sigismund
at last managed to gain reign over the Polish-Lithuanian state. He
gradually surrendered the countries and offices gained from the grace of King Vladislaus.

The preserved Court Account Books of
Sigismund
Jagiełło
from the period before his
reign in Lithuania (he was introduced to the throne of Grand Dukes on 20th October
1506)
and in Poland (he became the King of Poland on 8th December
1506,
the coronation took
place on 24th March
1507)
consist of three manuscripts at present archived as a part of the
Crown Treasury Archives, shelf-mark "royal accounts"
(Archiwum Skarbu Koronnego,
Dz. 1
Rachunki Królewskie)
in The Central Archives of Historical Records
(Archiwum Główne
Akt
Dawnych)
in Warsaw. Formally, there are two volumes of the main account books from the
years
1500-1504
and
1504-1507
(sign.

and one supplementary volume (sign.
21)
from the years
1493-1509/1510,
which includes records of payments made to the highest
class of the courtier elite (the members belonged to the formally defined category curienses)
specially copied from the main books. Thus records from account books from before the
year
1500
which no longer exist were preserved. Manuscripts sign.

were fully edit¬
ed, from the manuscript sign.
21
only records from the years
1493-1499,
i.e. records copied
from the unpreserved main account book or books, were edited.
As far as the scribes of the Court Account Books of
Sigismund
Jagiełło
are concerned
the edited text is quite simple. Majority of the records in all the three manuscripts were
made by a person referred to in the source by a conferred academic degree "Bachelor"
(baccalarius). This anonymous scribe (Scribe A) from the Duke's office was responsible
for bookkeeping and performed also other activities the Duke entrusted him with
-
in the
Duke's dispenser's absence the scribe temporarily took over his duties and arranged the
food supplies for the court, at times he paid out the salaries or alms, his presence was re¬
quired also on the repayment of some debts and when executing some financial transac¬
tions. The second, also anonymous, scribe (Scribe B) took over only when Scribe A was
not available. Scribe

(the
records he made are pointed out in the footnotes). The third and also the last scribe par¬
ticipating on the graphic aspect of the manuscripts

is the only one who could
be identified. It was steward of Prince
Sigismund,
Christopher Szydlowiecki who regularly
and in person inspected the bookkeeping which he used to confirm by his personal
(manu
propria)
signature.
The structure of all the three account books is rather simple. The income or funds flow¬
ing in, expenses covering common everyday operations of the court and salaries paid out
to persons according to their office were recorded chronologically. There is no thematic
division. Only the first pages of both the main account books include lists of chronologi¬
cally ordered incomes excerpted from the records and these could be found also within
the respective sections of the main account books. The records were kept in blocks one un¬
der the other, the sums were not separated in any way which means that the scribe did not
make even such a simple effort to increase the comprehensibility of the records. Visually,
the records in the main books were divided into specific parts only according to localities
where the accounting transactions (incomes and expenses) occurred. The only departure
SUMMARY

from this rule are the headings in the form of titles of social and socio-professional groups
from periods when salaries were being paid out. This occurred especially during prepara¬
tions for longer travels or simply when cash arrived into the Prince's forever hungry treas¬
ury. For completeness, it needs to be added that the preserved book Regestrum curiensium
(manuscript sign.
21)
is structured according to individual persons
-
courtiers and within
these sections the scribe once again uses division by the localities where the payments were
made.
The funds flowed into
Sigismund
Jagiello's treasury depending on the source of his in¬
come. The sources changed over time (simply said the income grew), thus the handover of
the cash became much more complicated as well. Generally speaking, the occasional one-
off financial injections from Sigismund's ruling siblings or loans granted by different credi¬
tors, individuals and town corporations were organised ad hoc in attendance of author¬
ised persons. Income (from fiscal to the income from minting) belonging to
Sigismund
the
Duke of
Głogów
and
Opava
was sent by governors of both the territories and the transport
of capital from his possessions in Poland was carried out similarly. During Sigismund's
stays in both the metropolises of the
Jagiełło
world, the representatives of two most pow¬
erful banking houses
-
Thurzós in Buda
and Boners in
Kraków
-
took over the roles of the
main guarantors of income into the Prince's treasury.
The edited Court Account Books are a significant evidence of complicated monetary cir¬
cumstances in the Middle and Middle-East Europe at the turn of the 15th and 16th century.
The scribe responsible for keeping records of incomes and expenditures of Sigismund's
court regularly quoted exact correlations among different types of currency and differenti¬
ated also the quality of different issues of the same coin. He converted the sums of money
into florins, which in most cases were not real means of payment, but in the chaos of many
monetary systems served as an objective unit of measure. Sigismund's treasury received
cash from different areas and thus also in different currencies which sometimes made the
bookkeeping exceptionally complicated. Especially in the first months after the relocation
from
Buda
to Silesia it is impossible not to notice that the bookkeeper scribe had consider¬
able difficulties to fulfil his duty to count everything correctly as he had to revise and cor¬
rect the records (sometimes even several times). To make his work easier he used subtotals
which he regularly wrote at the end of the folio. The objective correctness of the book¬
keeping was checked in certain time periods by Steward Christopher
Szydłowiecki,
he also
entered the personally written out reports on the results of the inspections into the main
account books. Thus we can conclude that the edited Court Account Books of
Sigismund
Jagiełło
are without doubt the key sources of understanding the financial and monetary
system in the Middle and Middle-East Europe at the end of the Middle Ages and the begin¬
ning of the Early Modern Period.

The Court Account Books of the Prince
Sigismund
Jagiełło,
latter Polish-Lithuanian rul¬
er
Sigismund
I the Old, could be without exaggeration considered unique not only in the
Czech but also in the Middle and Eastern European context. The Court Account Books of
(not only)
Jagiełło
rulers were either not preserved in the Bohemian and Hungarian lands
or exist in mere fragments. The account books connected with the courts of Polish and Lith¬
uanian rulers have been preserved in exceptionally compact series but these are concerned
with the Czech history only marginally. The Court Account Books of Prince
Sigismund,
who before his reign in the Polish-Lithuanian state used to travel within the borders of all
the countries ruled by the
Jagiełło
dynasty and as a governor was also the ruler's deputy
in the north part of the Bohemian Crown and as a feoffee of King Vladislaus reigned over
the Silesian Duchy of
Głogów
and
Opava,
are exceptionally valuable source
ofinformation
which of course suits the aim of many national Middle and Middle-East European histori¬
ographies. The geographical extent of the source is immense: from the Danube in the South
to the Baltic Sea in the North, from Dresden in the West to Moscow in the East. Activities,
I
742
ÚČTY DVORA JAGELLONSKÉHO PRINCE ZIKMUNDA
interests and living requirements of the
Jagiełło
Prince further connected this territory
with Western Europe, Scandinavia or empires of the Ottoman Sultans and Crimean Tatar
Khans. Moreover, the Court Account Books of Prince
Sigismund
are exceptionally detailed
and from this point of view even more detailed than the preserved analogical matter con¬
cerned with the courts of his siblings Polish kings and Lithuanian grand dukes. Contentu-
ally and thematically the potential of the source is inexhaustible indeed
-
it can be expected
that such a thorough, nearly daily, routine records will appeal to the international commu¬
nity social scientists (historians of cultural, economic, social and political history, ethnolo¬
gists as well as religionists or musicologists)
,
natural scientists and also to those concerned
with mixed scientific disciplines (archaeologists, geographers or cartographers). Thus, in
terms of the programme, the potential of the edition is interdisciplinary.
