the Germans had laid
more than
4
million mines along, and inland from, the Normandy coastline,
which meant that clearing paths to enable Allied infantry and vehicles to
advance was a priority
PAGE TWO The view from a Landing Craft Assault (LCA)
as American infantrymen, struggling in the water because they are
weighed down with heavy kit, begin their lengthy trek to the shore from
the beached position of the LCA. The prone men visible ahead of them are
either dead or seeking what cover they can from the -withering storm of
German machine gun fire from undamaged strongpoints.
PAGE THREE Weapons dropped for or made by the French Resistance. This
group includes delayed-action explosives and incendiary devices. Of note
are the incendiary matches and the home-made fragmentation grenade.
ABOVE General Patton s pistols. The Colt .45in single action revolver (top)
has
non-
factory engraving and initialled ivory grips. The Smith and
Wesson .357in Magnum revolver (bottom) also has initialled ivory grips
and was sent to
Patton
in
1935.
