This book consists of five chapters: an introduction, family as a develop¬
mental and educational factor and components of education
-
physical, intel¬
lectual, moral, aesthetic, religious and sexual. Within the moral component
particular attention has been paid to the following questions: being human
and humaneness, being inhuman and inhumanness and several types of love.
The fourth chapter deals with society and its basic features and is followed by
a conclusion, an abstract in a foreign language and bibliography. The book has
an aim of enabling the reader to gain some knowledge on how the folk peda¬
gogy developed and how education which was based on it fulfilled its function
of training the youth to be successfully educated and self-educated in order
to become the creators of social life and bearers of progressive trends. The ba¬
sic characteristics of folk education are here laid out, amongst which the most
important are
-
being natural

folk education evolved in a natural environ¬
ment and in a natural way; spontaneity
-
it was not organised according to the
set rules, but according to the learner

needs; graduality
-
nothing was done
suddenly and in fits:

makes a mickle). Everything had to be done in a set order

(There is no daybreak before the dawn); had to be obvious

on exploring natural objects and occurrences in their natural setting. Example
giving was the most powerful educational method: children were asked to fol¬
low the adults examples; the adults told them: Do it the way I do it . This work
gives special attention to the family as an educational factor and the education¬
al role of parents, especially the mother. Motherly education was based on love
whereas father
s
methods came from fear. The educational role of other fami¬
ly members has also been pointed out, especially the role of grandparents. The
components of education are analysed here from different perspectives. Phys¬
ical education stressed all those factors which enabled every child to develop
into a strong, beautiful and healthy human being, having in mind that health,

strength and beauty were extremely valued. When it comes to the intellectu¬
al education, it was important to develop those mental strengths and abilities
which would enable every individual to develop all their mental competences
-
speech, thinking, imagination, memory, and intuition. In the area of moral
education it was necessary to produce

(a good, kind hearted man, with natural gifts). Special atten¬
tion was given to the development of humanness and to eliminating everything
that enables inhumanness. Love was another focus, as love was considered to
be a factor which enables interpersonal relations which are based on tolerance,
friendship, understanding and mutual respect. Beauty was another interest of
folk education. The beauty
ornature,
clothes, footwear, artefacts, especially the
beauty of jewellery was particularly valued. Many songs and other literary cre¬
ations were dedicated exactly to describing human beauty, weapons, equipment
and so on. Next to the demand on every individual to have a healthy body, to
be intellectually developed
-
smart, moral and beautiful, it was expected that
he/she is religious and that he/she nourishes healthy sexuality. It was required
that the religiousness is developed through believing, prayer and good deeds.
Many erotic songs were dedicated to sexual education and this had an aim of
establishing healthy sexuality. All erotic songs give away gaiety, but also seri¬
ousness and seek the establishment of healthy sexual relations. Folk education
did not forget that the man as a work-driven creature. That is why work and
diligence were valued, respected and praised, whereas absence of work and la¬
ziness were stigmatised as damaging faults. We have pointed out the fact that
the man is a social being and that he cannot live without other humans and
without socialising with them. Society is not only a precondition for human
survival, but is also a shelter, a teacher, as well as a judge of people s values. A
man
s
features and values can only be perceived within a society. The others
are the ones who value man s deeds and their outcomes. The man is what oth¬
ers think and say about him, not what he thinks of himself. The book further
indicates that folk literature: epic and lyric poetry, short stories, fairy tales, fa¬
bles, anecdotes and other genres set up a basis of folk pedagogy and folk edu¬
cation. They were a spiritual, moral, aesthetic, religious and sexual basis. Eve¬
rything you needed to know and learn could be found in them. They were in¬
exhaustible sources which enabled everybody to be educated and get equipped
for the future. To sum up, the people used to be their own teacher. They learned
from what they created themselves, therefore, self-teaching and self-education
were the main elements of self-realisation of every individual.
