SUMMARY
Memory and Memories of World War II in Czech Lands. The War Memoirs of
the Czechoslovak Soldiers from Second External Resistance
The subject discussed in this work, part of the collective memory of the Second
World War in the Bohemian Lands or, more broadly, in Czechoslovakia, compris¬
es many layers. Though many similar books exist on wartime memory elsewhere,
the subject has so far rarely been dealt with by Czech scholars in the social sci¬
ences and the humanities. Despite its many difficulties, the topic and its treat¬
ment present, from the historian s viewpoint, not only great challenges but also
great opportunities.
The topic is largely defined, and to some extent also influenced, by the nature of
the sources. The author of the current work has intentionally based his research
on comparatively broad definitions of the key terms of the life stories (primarily
conceived as a means of relating individuals past experiences) and memoir-like
works (one of the forms of presenting these stories), for example, diaries, written
recollections, and memoirs (in published or manuscript form), but also works of
belles-lettres (in both verse and prose), articles, interviews and programmes in
the mass media, the recollections of eye-witnesses, and also interviews conducted
by practitioners of oral history. What these sources have in common is that dur¬
ing the Second World War most of their authors, at least for some time, served
either as volunteers or conscripts in the Czechoslovak Army and Air Force in ex¬
ile in Poland, France, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union.
The work essentially aims to identify and analyse the phenomenon of memoir-
like works as the shaping of life stories, and it attempts to discuss in outline their
authors, their typology, and the circumstances in which the works emerged, and
generally to put them into context. This also entails examining the use of memoir-
like works, that is, products of memory, as potential sources (not only as histori¬
cal sources, but also, for example, as sources of information for the mass media)
for the study of the Czechoslovak resistance abroad, Czechoslovak military his¬
tory, and Czechoslovak and contemporary history in general, as well as its pop¬
ularization and artistic treatment.
Most of the sources used are first and foremost memoir-like works by Czecho¬
slovak soldiers, which have been published as books (about

items) in large
print runs, both in the country and outside, since the end of the war. Other sources
used here include memoir-like works in manuscript form, which are in the record

group of the Central Committee of the Association of Freedom Fighters

in the National Archive of the Czech Repub¬
lic, Prague, comprising about
40
items, six comparatively long biographical inter¬
views conducted using oral-history methods, some of which are in the collection
of the Centre for Oral History at the Institute of Contemporary History, Prague,
others of which are in the author s own archive, interviews conducted by jour¬
nalists, recordings from live web chats, and also public talks. Another kind of
source used here comprises memoir-like works by non-soldiers , editions of doc¬
uments, and lists of sources, printed documents, and statements in periodicals.
Also among the important sources are websites and certain films. Last but not
least, an important source comprises selected works of scholarly literature which
analyse the way memories are treated, for example, by the mass media, or how
they are used to write works of history. As a whole, these sources should be more
than sufficient to achieve the aims of the project.
A wide range of scholarly secondary literature of Czech and foreign provenance
has been used in the research. The author has turned to it not only to aid in his
analysis of the sources but also to find his bearings in the topic, in order to anchor
his work more firmly and to provide context. Amongst this literature are works
on theory and method (in particular, works written in English and in French), by
means of which one can gain familiarity with the concept of memory and grasp
it better. A variety of articles and books, both narrowly focused and more gener¬
al ones, were also used to gain knowledge about the times and the context into
which the memoir-like works were eventually incorporated. They also helped to
form the framework of interpretation in which the history of memory and eve¬
ryday life were researched with information drawn in particular from the mem¬
oir-like works. In a certain sense, the scholarly literature was meant, at least in
part, to substitute for other research on the sources. Despite the volume and the
breadth of the existing literature, the author has aimed to use as much of it as
possible, particularly works of Czech provenance.
The special structure of the work comprises nine chapters largely of a theo¬
retical and methodological nature, in which the genesis of the life story is grad¬
ually told both at a general level and also in the forms of its presentation and
development. Using the example of memoir-like works by Czechoslovak soldiers,
the author develops a typology of memoir-like works (diaries, recollections, and
memoirs) and of the role that some close or less close other plays in their crea¬
tion. The author then briefly discusses belles-lettres, Czechoslovak soldiers life
stories as treated by the mass media, and the live recollections of Czechoslovak
solider-narrators as conceived by oral history. The penultimate chapter of this
section is concerned with the collective memory of veterans organizations in

and, later, the Czech Republic. The work concludes with an out¬
line of the ways these memory-based sources of history have been used.
