SUMMARY
Tavern is indeed a „great third place , right behind the family, that will, as a
primary centre of our privacy, always hold the pole position, its opposite
-
the
public, without whose constitution there is no modern society, and work, as
the source of existence and self-realization of human beings, which share the
second position.
If the tavern is a true teacher of life, an unavoidable social institution, especially
in Serbs and in the Balkans, and a sociological laboratory of sorts, then it should
be subjected to rigorous scientific study. And to that extent, we claim, that it can
be abstracted as a separate area of research and as such become
a subdiscipline
within, for example, sociology of everyday life, sociology of settlements, that is,
a wider scope of sociology of culture. In that case, the appropriate name for the
„new field of research would be the sociology of taverns. Such denomination
has already appeared.
This is not as undisputable as it seems at first, and soon a fierce argument
would spark. Historians would raise their voices: „Come now, sociologists,
you have gone too far in your pursuit of always newer and newer subjects,
proclaiming them exclusively yours, while forgetting who introduced you to
the tavern in the first place
-
when it appeared on the stage of history, where
it appeared and how it has developed since then.
-
And they would be right.
Ethnologists/anthropologists would also have a lot to add: „Well, dear
colleagues sociologists, who has left such a detailed account of the tavern and
explained the meaning of its rituals if not us
—
from presenting gifts to female
singers to breaking glasses
—
And they would be right as well.
By only apostrophizing these two, we have not set aside other disciplines
that would argue in the same vein; we are aware of the fact that the complexity

of the subject of research
-
the tavern is indeed a complex phenomenon
-
requires an interdisciplinary approach.
[lî
From this reality emerges the need
for an
interdiscipline
that we have titled tavernology S2]
II
Tavernology, much like cultural studies, religious studies, and romology, is an
interdisciplinary science, which should be differentiated from multidisciplinarity.
Because, „this indicator
múltig
indeed, implies multiple disciplines which can
deal with a specific phenomenon and subject of research simultaneously,
without necessarily cooperating in a manner that local police forces of
individual countries cooperate with the
Interpol.
This
multi
does not have
to imply that, while the prefix inter does imply some kind of permeation and
cooperation
(Vukomanović, 2004:127).[3]
There is nothing left to do but to agree with the above religious studies
scholar and add
-
as we did previously
(Петровић & Тјорђевић,
2011:29) -
how
the outcome of interdisciplinarity is „more than the sum of its constituent parts
of knowledge of the subject of research which belong to different disciplines.
It is the case of a purposeful interaction of knowledge, skills and research
procedures that belong to different scientific areas with the aim of observing the
problem from various learning perspectives . (Let readers assure themselves by
reading the three wonderful examples from Tavernology: the sociological one
- Jörg Rössel,
Michael
Hölscher,
„Social Milieux in Pubs and Restaurants: An
[1]
The position of new French sociologists also supports our propositions, since it deems that
the modern society is nowadays not abundant in relationships which could be specific enough
to be called social, especially those that would fall under a single society s domain: „Today, the
social is dissipated: it is at the same time everywhere and nowhere (Latur,
2010).
The change
has taken over both society and science, and it requires a change in both the subject and
methods of social sciences, the representatives of the new French sociology believe, showing
it on the example of the fruitful connection of sociology with anthropology, philosophy of
politics, linguistics, psychology, etc.
[2]
We did not coin the term
-
it was available in the „easy literature and journalism, but we
are the first to use it in the scientific sense.
[3]
On the next page, Milan
Vukomanović
successfully explains the core of interdisciplinarity
on the example of religion: „For instance,
a multírelígíous
dialogue is the first step toward
the interreligious dialogue. Interdisciplinarity would, on the other hand, represent a sort of
permeation and cooperation of those different disciplines within the domain of religion. This
is a term which has been in use more frequently after the end of World War II and onwards,
even though it was first coined somewhere during the
1920s...
Yet in a more modern, or
maybe even a postmodern, sense it also means something else. It is even linked to a notion
of postdisciplinarity or antidisciplinarity. It is the case of understanding that the division of
science into disciplines is already outdated, but I usually use it in the classical sense
-
meaning
some sort of cooperation or permeation of those disciplines (p.
128).

S.
Kostić,
„To Travel and to Invigorate
the Body While Travelling ; and the ethnological/anthropological one
-
Mattijs

Thus, tavernology, because it is interdisciplinary, is also a synthesizing
science. Therefore, a social scientist
—
a scientist working within social sciences,
conducting the analysis of the tavern, bears the title of tavernologist.^
Ill
Tavernology is an
interdiscipline
which, founded on the permeation of theoretical
and methodological concepts of history, ethnology/anthropology, and sociology,
studies the
socio-
historical phenomenon of tavern as a social institution, its past,
present, and future.
IV
History, ethnology/anthropology and sociology cooperate in the interdisciplinary
call of tavernology, joined by a series of disciplines ranging from economics,
marketing and tourism studies, through social psychology and art history, to
communicology and literary theory.
It is self-apparent that a national economy pays attention to the income
generated by the accommodation and catering sector. Tourism studies deal with
the tavern even more, processing it and turning it into a brand, since tourism
economy is nowadays a very profitable activity. Sociological empirical research
is often without soul
-
boring and prosaic
-
without the results obtained by
social psychologists through observing the tavern networks of relationships
between the guests. Art history demonstrates an almost regular intermingling
in a, let us say painting, trio of artist-tavern-work of art.
Still, what are communicology and literary theory doing here? What do
you mean what
—
a tavernologist would reply! Have not journalists of all kinds
of mass media for transferring messages, especially those in the press, left
perhaps the most significant descriptions of atmosphere in taverns, and is not
the tavern an important journalistic institution? And what can we say about
writers and fine literature, about penetrating deeply into the spirit of tavern
and its participants?
[4]
See how this difficulty was resolved concerning the determination of romology, its studies
and the profession of a romologist

2010:16-25).

TAVERNOLOGY/ SUMMARY
б45
VI
Up until recently, the road to accepting a new field as academic was a difficult
one. It took decades, sometimes even an entire century, to travel from amateur
scientists, through precursors and pioneers, to founders and establishment
into higher education.161 The recognition was gained at the moment when the
discipline would start being taught at the university level
-
the status of a „big
science was indeed an exception.171
Today, with the „Americanization and „Bolognization , this procedure has
been taken to absurdity. The imperative of establishing and proposing newer and
newer courses, especially elective ones, as the pledge for retaining the „mere
workplace, pushes the academic community into quickly accepting numerous
fields, for example, with the marker „sociology . Almost every segment of social
reality, regardless of how small and insignificant it is because it is being sucked
in by the wider social phenomenon and institution and it cannot be separated
as a an individual scientific subject, declares itself independent and attaches
to itself a specific sociological discipline. That is how we have sociologies of
everything, from the sociology of love relationships to sociology of nice weather.
Or as
Dušan Marinković
(2011:4)
notes, on the abovementioned Oldenburg s
work The Great Good Place . „On the one hand, it has drawn attention toward
the social importance and function of third places, as it has, on the other, drawn
attention toward the fact that this is not a less important sociological topic
from all those that have been fragmented in the last couple of decades into
sociological
subdisciplines
(sociology of sport, sociology of entertainment,
sociology of the body, etc.).
Tavernology will, through its interdisciplinarity and real subject matter,
hopefully avoid such destiny, and count on a quick entry into the academic
community. Therefore, the correct and wary question posed by
Marinković
(2010:3-4) -
„Is there, at least, a relatively acceptable theoretical draft, a
working, preliminary conceptual scheme that could serve as a framework for
a prolegomenon for the unjustly marginalized sociological topic as is this one
on taverns
-
or as Ray Oldenburg calls them, the great good places
-
The Great
Good Place (Oldenburg,
1989) -
the answer is: yes, there is. This is the purpose
of the collection of texts Tavernology.

VII
In the previous discussions on the phenomenon of tavern, two very conflicted
bodies of opinion have appeared.
The first one comprises those who openly support the tavern as an
irreplaceable social institution, apply bright colours to it, find no flaws in it,
consider it perspective and are unaware of it being surrounded by various forms
of spending one s free time and enjoying oneself. Namely, they are on its side,
even if they lose their critical stance: „The tavern will be our second home for a
long time to come, under the condition that it stays the same. Inevitably, it will
have to change and adapt to the modern state of things and openly enter the
game with the rivals that have „attacked her from all sides and with various
„weapons . There are four of its most dangerous opponents:
6.
television,
7.
fast food restaurants,
8.
betting shops, and
9.
cafés
(Ђорђевић,
2011:48-49).
The other one is taken by those who endorse without any subterfuge, above
all, the culture of
cafés as a
more modern form of everyday spending of time,
finding even the non-existing flaws in taverns, criticizing them to depreciation,
disputing their future, and proclaiming their end. Namely, they are uncritically
on the side of
cafés,
without any understanding for the tavern.
VIII
Both camps forget at the very beginning that the picture is not black and white:
neither is the tavern an „imaginary institution, once created and eternal,
nor is the
café a
„finally found wisdom woven from some durable fabric and
everlasting. Therefore, since it is not possible
-
thus not desirable
-
to fully
remove the input of values, one has to be a tavernologist with a well-established
critical attitude. Having a critical relation toward the tavern means nothing else
than sticking to one s experiential data, studying it empirically, representing and
providing its future in a historical and ethnological manner, pointing to both
sides of its medal, manifest and latent functions, i. e. shedding some light on it
in a dialectic perspective of past-present-future.
The task of tavernology is to provide the most comprehensive possible
insight into the institution of tavern from a historical-ethnological-sociological
perspective: what it was, what it is, and what it will be in the future. For its past
is exciting, its present interesting, and its future certain. Tavern is indeed a
„great third place right behind the family, that will, as a primary centre of our

privacy, always hold the pole position, its opposite
-
the public, without whose
constitution there is no modern society, and work, as the source of existence
and self-realization of human beings, which share the second position.(8]
Previous sentences contain the main idea behind the book, that has been
collected for a year or two: to show what tavernology might be with a collection
of texts. Some texts are reprinted domestic articles, some are translations of
foreign authors, while the majority has been written for this specific occasion.
They are divided into three wholes, the so-called sociological, historical·
ethnological, and journalistic-literary tavernology (followed by an ample
bibliography of tavernological literature, register of names, notes on authors
and editor, notes on appendices, and a summary in English). The writer of
the afterword to this collection is Dr. Ljubinko
Pušić,
full professor of urban
sociology at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of
Novi Sad,
and a remarkable
analyst of tavern as an urban code. It is a great honour to have him prepare a
comprehensive and critically directed afterword titled „On a Special Reading
of Social Reality .
-
His discussion will certainly have a far-reaching influence
on the upcoming tavernological research.
In
summa,
if the editor s primary intention
-
to encourage a more
scrupulous study of tavern as a social institution and facilitate the establishment
