INSTEAD OF A CONCLUSION
In history, there are two types of people
—
those that create history and those
that follow it. Nikola
Petrov
Rusinski
belongs to the former category. He is a
person whose awareness for the high values of human dignity has been implanted
into him early on in his life and constantly cultivated ever since. He remained
loyal to the revolutionary concept for liberating Macedonia and to the ideological
philosophy of the left wing (the socialists) to the very end. But because of this
persistance
of his,
Rusinski
also felt dissapointed many times throughout his life
especially by some of his contemporaries, as well as some of his fellow fighters,
who, despite being very well acquainted with his activities and his dedication to
the Macedonian liberation movement, minimized their significance or kept silent
about them. In this regard, we would like to mention Professor Ljubomir Miletich
from Sofia and the chronicler of the Macedonian liberation movement, Hristo
Siljanov. Thus, in the Memoirs by Ljubomir Miletich
—
an account of the battles
in the
Ohrid
region, printed in Sofia
(1926) —
what is apparent is the malicious
and biased attitude towards the revolutionary and organisational activities of
Nikola P.
Rusinski
as
a voivode
and a coordinator in the
Ohrid
revolutionary
district.l The recollections written down by Lj
.
Miletich are based on the accounts
by Smile Vojdanov,
Dejan
Dimitrov
and Nikola Mitrev who were first members
of the detachment led by
N.
P.
Rusinski,
then themselves became leaders of
detachments and local voivodes in the
Ohrid
region, but whose education was
rather scarce.
Rusinski,
on the other hand, who was a much more important
voivode
and coordinator, more educated than they were, and much more mature
regarding the ideology, was not interviewed when the accounts of the three
voivodes were written down2 (or even when they were printed), although he must
have had a thing or two to say. His name was barely even mentioned in these

a voivode
by the name of Nikola, from the Maleshevo region
by birth (Smile Vojdanov),3 and the other time as Nikola
Maleshevskľ
(Dejan
Dimitrov).4
It is a similar situation with the written accounts of Gjorche
Petrov
as well, where the name of
Voivode
Rusinski
and his activities in the part of
Mariovo
closer to
Prilep
at the time of the
Hinden
Uprising, are not mentioned at
all.5 However, the question of whether Professor Lj. Miletich himself intervened
to that end in the course of writing down these accounts and while editing them
before they were released for printing, remains an open question.
The
marginalisation,
and at times even the ignoring, of the revolutionary
engagements and opus of
Voivode
Nikola P.
Rusinski,
the specific tasks he had
and their results in most of the
Bitola
revolutionary district, is most obviously
done by Hristo Siljanov in his work The Liberation Battles of Macedonia.6
Even though he knew
Rusinski
personally ever since he came to
Prilep
as a
voivode
and a coordinator,7 and even though he had a good grasp on both the
times they lived in and the events that took place, and knew many of the other
participants in the battles, he, in his aforementioned work and in his refined pro
supremists
biasť*
reduced Nikola P.
Rusinski
to a local
voivode,
a coordinator
and an agitator, confining him only to the Demir Hisar
—
Krushevo revolutionary
district, and referring to him as a not-so-literate worker , a socialist , with
a certain amount of self-education and komitadji experience as a member of
the detachment led by
Goce Delchev .9
The revolutionary activities of
Voivode
Rusinski
throughout the Ohrid-Struga revolutionary scope
-
building the fighting
forces and arming the region, actively working with the population, eliminating
the bandit group of Bedzet-bey, and other events of which Hristo Siljanov was
very well aware
-
were not even mentioned. Moreover, nothing was said of the

But the late Siljanov did not want to have a more comprehensive conversation with me
so as not to be infected by my socialism, as he later told his comrades from

revolutionary activities of
Rusinski
in both the
Prilep
revolutionary district and in
the district of
Bitola
Plain and
Mariovo
area, as well as of his participation in the
preparations for the
Hinden
Uprising and his very participation in it, too. All this,
as well as the mystification of the truth regarding the activities of the Bulgarian
officer
Toma
Dávidov
who came to inspect all of the armed forces of the
Ohrid
revolutionary district
(1903),
and who barely lasted a week, causing an affair
with over
250
victims being incarcerated and in prisons, many of whom killed ^
he himself being one of them, were the motive behind the written reaction
by
Rusinski
towards the end of
1939,
entitled On the Road to Truth .11 In it,
Rusinski,
besides presenting his abounding revolutionary past and the sad reality
of his life, also presents in full his illegal activities within the
Bitola
revolutionary
district in a polemical way. And thus, the mystifications lose their strength before
the facts which are plentiful. It is as if
Rusinski
himself intended to do it (albeit
not on purpose).
The rich material that he has left as a source (undoubtedly based on his
j
ournal,
his notebook and his notes) is a historical material of a significant importance.
With due cautiousness in regarding memoirs as a source for reconstructing
any events and processes, we conclude that his accounts in their narrativeness,
precision and detailed factography, and in the absence of other authentic data, are
an unavoidable and valuable source for studying the history of TMORO
(SMARO
-
Secret Macedonian-Adrianople Revolutionary Organization), the Young Turks
reign, the period of wars and the circumstances on the Balkans, the anti-fascist
fight, and so on. They contain detailed information on all that he or the people
around him went through. His powerful perception and critical spirit often detect
processes and events of a wider significance for the entire Macedonian national
liberation movement. In his written accounts, Nikola
Petrov
Rusinski
is not just
a chronicler of events and processes, but also an active conversationalist who
explains, re-examines, analyses and criticises. As for the time when he began
transforming his revolutionary experience and events into a written record, which
in itself was a long process, it is believed that it was in the period between the
two world wars. Hence, the contents offered in this paper are an attempt to follow,
through the documented biography of Nikola
Petrov Rusinski
and through his
simple human and revolutionary fulness, the important events and processes from
the Macedonian historical corpus over a longer time period.
