The building of today’s Goethe-institut has its origins in 1905 as a
Prague insurance bank, and served as the Embassy of the GDR after
the Second World War. In 1990 the Goethe-institut began to use the
building step by step. When Heinrich Blomeke became director of the
Goethe-institut in Prague in 2008, he first invited the interior architect
Jan Reuter to develop ideas for a smooth modernisation of the pub-
lic areas in the building to overcome the contradiction between its
prominent location in an historical building and the need to address
a younger audience with contemporary programmes. We identified
six areas for artistic concepts and asked Stephan Berg, director of
the Kunstmuseum Bonn, to curate this project. It was very clear that
it would be not a question of a superficial embellishment of the inte-
rior. but an intense artistic intervention. STEPHAN BERG invited five
artists from Germany who developed their projects in a series of work-
shops and research trips. All five artists did not merely accept this, but
lived up to the challenge so that the artistic contributions that arose
within these three years can point to a wealth of dialogic possibili-
ties with the building, the city and the Czech culture. They investigate
further the relation between Germans and Czechs, and the Goethe-
Insiitut’s perception of itself and its role.
As a painter, MICHAEL JÄGER works in the interface between the
space and the picture, between the architecture and the surface. In his
reverse painting on glass, he links the fluent, abstract, imagistic pas-
sages with constructive and spatially arranged structures that expand
the flatness of a picture into 3D. in Prague, he produced a mural paint-
ing in a side wing of the building which rises over two levels, referenc-
ing the colours of the Goethe-institut as a whoie in a very artificial colo-
ration. The artist was influenced by Prague’s Art Nouveau architecture
and his painting reflects in still more essential ways the sketches and
drawings of the great Prague architect Pavel Janäk (1882-1956) who,
around 1910, created a specifically Czech cubistic canon.
The ’work of ANTJE SCHIFFERS is based on the principle of con-
stant exchange. On her trip to Italy (“How I travelled through Palermo
to Siena", 2000/2001), she traded her pictures in advance for neces-
sary painting materials and an Italian language workshop, and later

she financed her trip with the help of pictures she painted on assign-
ment for lodgings and fare. With a similar concept she went to Russia
and Central Asia (“I am in the steppe,” 2002). In ail of her projects
since 2004, together with her life partner THOMAS SPRENGER, she
investigates the status of an artist and the value of his work. In their
Prague project “We phone with Prague” they used a Czech weekend
house (“chalupa”) for drinking wine and beer and collecting mush-
rooms, but their intention was to understand this narrow space, this
place between “work and leisure” as a metaphor for the desire of
Prague’s citizens to be somewhere else, as a place of their real identity.
The whole idea arose from their noticing that many people in Prague
leave the city on Friday afternoon to live on their “chalupas” and do not
come back before Sunday evening.
The nature to which JULIA SCHMID refers in her work is always
shown in a domesticated form, cut back and trimmed to fit civilisa-
tion’s needs: e. g. as floral decoration in public buildings, as vegeta-
tion on the sidewalks or as a park ensemble. For her projects she
researches on site, and prior to her activities she always defines an
(mostly) urban area for her investigations. In Prague, she chose the
Wenceslav Square as a place of significant historical meaning where,
to her surprise, so few traces today offer evidence of the demonstra-
tions that took place here during the Prague Spring towards the end of
the ‘Sixties’. In her second Prague project, she asked visitors and staff
of the Goethe-lnstitut’s library to choose their favourite or most impor-
tant books and arrange them so that a round set could be installed
and photographed in a shape of a “Book Clock.” Last but not (east,
her mixed collections of German books and Czech translations are a
reflection on cultural dialogue of both nations.
Since the end of the 1990s, HEIKE WEBER has turned the medium
of drawing in a very wide-ranging sense into a subject of spatial-instal-
iative interventions, which extend the graphic process beyond the con-
ventional picture format in the direction of a performative spatial draft.
A crucial aspect of her artistic intervention in the Goethe-institut refers
to an extensive floor drawing where a PVC coating is covered with
mostly red permanent edding-marker lines. Since the lineatures orient

themselves on the room shape and follow its every edge and irregular-
ity, they function indexiaily, aiming for a true connection with reality,
which can be understood as an act of localization. Yet the most impor-
tant meaning of the red lines remains their ability to create a link to the
surrounding architecture. The overall impression of a certain tremor in
her “Bottomless5’ project is an appeal against the idea of a solid, eas-
ily readable reality. Each visitor exposing himself to Weber's floor rows
will experience this as a hazard to his fixed standpoint, as a slight ver-
tigo and hallucination of a spatial abyss. And of course, the artistic
self, recording these quakes, is itself a part of this process. From the
strict two-dimensional medium of drawing emerges a unitary physical
experience, more yet: the physical dimension of the architecture.
SASCHA WEIDNER has developed an impressive photo proce-
dure that joins the aesthetic of nearly-accidental snapshots, thorough
staging, intimacy and romantic seeking for a picture. A style of staging
characterized by extremely different sizes and free-style presentation
of the material combines with a tradition of subjective photography of
the 1980s and 1990s - such as that of Wolfgang Tillmans. For his pro-
ject “The pictures of others55 in the 2nd floor of the Goethe-lnstitut the
public itself is the producer of the photos. On a wall, a set of 2386 lami-
nated pictures in different sizes is presented. Each photo was made
by a chance Prague tourist who was asked to give Sascha Weidner his
pictures. The photos are arranged just due to their colours, not by con-
tent, so that new connections and narratives reveal among the motifs.
For “The Sorrows of Young W.55, the whole wall in corridor on the
ground floor was painted black to serve as a blackboard. The art-
ist wrote parts of Goethe’s “Werther” using crayon and pinned a lot of
adhesive Post-it notices and index cards on it, including the complete
set of photos from a former project, but with their back sides turned
up. In addition to that, he brought a set of personal colour photos of
his family (450 pieces) onto the wall, coupled with other magazine pic-
tures of catastrophes around the world and some artistic postcards.
This massive logbook will be supplemented with the visitors commen-
tary, For example, the language teachers get index cards with ques-
tions from Sascha Weidner, which can be supplemented with the

student’s statements. On the matrix of the Goethe text which charges
the whole exhibition with a powerful existential dimension, a dialogue
about the possibilities of being able to disclose myself to another per-
son unfolds in this sober corridor of the Goethe-lnstitut And it is by no
means an accident that it happens just where Czechs are learning the
German language.
The art works wifi remain in the Goethe-lnstitut Prag
from 2012 until 2015.
