| adam_text | THE 8th ASSAULT GROUP
OF THE ROMANIAN AIR FORCES (1943-1945)
- Summary -
According to the Order no. 530 /5.7.1943 issued by the Roma-
nian Air Forces General Staff, beginning with May the 1 l,h 1943, the 8lh
Fighter Group of the 2nd Fighter Wing, based on the Târgşor airfield,
received Henschel ¡29 B2 aircraft, and became the 8th Assault Group. On
the first day, the Group had 12 officers, 18 NCOs, 18 technical NCOs
and 270 aircraftmen. Captain Ion Cara was appointed commander of
the Group. The Group consisted in three squadrons: the 41st, under
the orders of Lieutenant (flying officer) Şotropa Leonida, the 42ml ֊
under the command of Lieutenant Nicolae Serescu, and the 60th, under
the command of Captain (flight lieutenant) Ştefan Aiexandrescu.
All the pilots were sent by train to Kirovograd, where they had fly-
ing courses for the twin engine attack aircraft He 129. It is remarkable
that the pilots were mainly NCOs formed as fighters and already hav-
ing two years of front experience, namely hundreds of flight hours in
war missions. In June 1943, the pilots of the 8th Assault Group started
formation flying, so that in July they should be able to begin front activ-
ities. For a short period of time, they were relocated on the base airfield
in Mariupol and then, on August 10 h, they started operational flights
based on Kramatorskaya airfield. The first missions were flown against
Soviet infantry and tanks; the first pilot missing in action was Adju-
tant (warrant officer) Petre Sârbu, on August 16th. By August 30th 1943
a new commanding officer was appointed, Lieutenant-Commander
(squadron leader) Duţu Vasiliu. Between August 20‘h and September
2nd 1943, the 8U‘ Assault Group moved to Mariupol and was flying daily
missions on the southern front. On his 26th mission, Adj. Constantin
Georgescu’s aircraft was hit by the enemy AA fire. With only one engine
running and a badly damaged wing, he still was able to land his no. 122
safely. In early September, Adj. Ion Enache from the the 42lld Assault
Squadron landed in no man’s land, but managed to return to the air-
field several days later.

During the first week of September 1943, the 8th Assault Group
moved on the Staryi Blisnetsy (Blisniuky, Ukraine) airfield. New pilots
came from Bucharest: Lieutenant Rada Dimitrie to the 42nd Squadron,
Captain Pretor Dimitrie to the 60th Squadron, and 2 d Lieutenant (pilot
officer) loan Buda to the 42nd Squadron. Lieutenant Dimitrie Rada died
in a flight on September 6th, and a few days later, their former German
instructor, Lieutenant Orth Dieter, liaison officer to the 4th German Air
Fleet. Adj. Theodor Zabava managed to return to the base on foot, after
he was shot down on September 14th, during a bombing mission.
The squadrons of the 8th Assault Group were moved to the air-
fields in Kherson and Henicesk (September 19th-October 29th). Adj.
loan Poenaru was shot down by the enemy AA, but he suvived and was
taken prisoner. He managed to return in 1945. Starting with October
29th, the 8th Group moved to Tschaplinka airfield and operated from
this base until November 2nd. Lt. Muntean Lazar was shot down over
Soviet positions and was saved by Oberfelwebel Reitberger. Adj. Stoian
Dumitru, from the 60th Squadron, died on November 2nd. The same
day, the whole Group was moved to the Kherson airfield. Here, the
pilots truly demonstrated their combat capabilities. The Soviets were
pressing hard and managed to break the front line; tens of thousands
of Romanian soldiers were in danger of being surrounded and taken
prisoneis. For eight days the 8th Assault Group flied hundreds of mis-
sions under enemy fire, saving Romanian troops from death and cap-
tivity. During these fights, five He-129s were shot down and two pilots
were killed. Adj. Mladin Constantin crashed behind enemy lines but
was rescued by Adj. Marinescu Ovidiu in a daring landing and take-off
under heavv Soviet fire.

Between November 12th and January 7th 1944, the 8th Assault
Group was based on Nikolaev and Lepetika airfields. Two pilots were
lost* Adj. Verde§ Enache, from the 42nd Squadron, and Adj. Logofatu
loan, from the 41st Squadron.
The 8th Assault Group moved to Odessa airfield on March 13th
1944. Then, they returned to Romania to Tecuci airfield. Cpt. av.
Vlasceanu Ion was appointed commander of the 41st Squadron and
Cpt. Eftimopol Ion took the command of the 60th.
From June 30th to August 20th, 1944, the 8th Assault Group was
based on Matca airfield, near Tecuci. Starting with August 20th, they
were based on the Gheraie§ti — Bacavi airfield.
After the events of August 23rd, 1944, when Romania joined the
United Nations, the 8th Assault Group was moved to Craiova airfield.

Starting with September 1944, they were relocated to Baloinh airfield,
in Transylvania. By the 25։tl of September, the assault squadrons com-
pleted hundreds of missions against the German and Horthyst forces,
for the liberation of Transylvania, a thousand-year-old Romanian ter-
ritory.
In this battle for Transylvania, Lt. §tefanescu Dan, 2ncl Lt. Nastura§
Vasile, and 2mi Lt. Ungur Ovidiu were lost, in action, and Adj. Bulhac
Trifan, Adj. Mavinescu Jean and Lt. Munteanu Lazar were severely
wounded.
These important losses in pilots and materials led to the merging
of the 8lh Assault Group with the 6th/3ril Dive-Bomber Group. They flied
from Some§eni airfield untill November 14,1։ and then, from Turkeve
and Miskolc, in Hungary. Another hero, Adj. Scripcaru Vasile, died on
January 13th, 1945.
The 8th Assault/Dive-Bomber Group took part in the liberation
of Czechoslovakia. For months, they fought the enemy and the bad
weather. By the end of January, after repeated attacks and bombing
missions at low altitude, they brought their important contribution to
the liberation of Lovinobaňa, Rožňava, Brezno and Mikhailovo. In Feb-
ruary-March 1945, the 8fi] Assault/Dive-Bomber Group fought on the
Hron River, for the liberation of Kremnica, Hronská Breznica, Očová.
On February 25th 1945, the 8fh Assault/Dive-Bomber Group released
20 tons of bombs from a Iowr altitude near Lieskovec and Zolna. Adj.
Dumbravä Victor was shot down by the enemy AA. Even with a badly
damaged aircraft, he crash landed and survived. The 8th Assault/Dive-
Bomber Group decisively contributed to the battle for Zvolen and the
industrial and communication center of Uherský Brod.
Fighting for Czechoslovakia, they completed 119 missions with
422 sorties and 370 flight hours. They dropped 130 tons of bombs,
destroyed nine important communication centers, 13 trains, 66 land
convoys, 185 trucks etc.
Their heroism and value in combat were acknowledged by many
different Allied Commands in several citings in orders of the day.
