Overviev of Polish exile education in emigration magazines
Columns of Polish magazines issued in foreign countries during and after the second
World War agitated and still agitate some essential matters which on equal terms, regardless
of political, religious, or social outlook concern our countrymen. We can distinguish among
them the crime of Katyn, the Displaced Persons, the Polish Ressetlement Corps
-
portrayed
earlier by the author, as well as the educational opportunities of Poles in exile.
Jolanta Chwastyk-Kowalczyk
analysed this subject in the following opinion-creative pe¬
riodicals: in the London Polish Daily and after an obligatory fusion (in December
1943)
with the Scottish Soldier s Daily the subsequent Polish Daily and Soldier s Daily , White
Eagle , Wings , World News , Aviation Thoughts , News , Poets Press , Culture ,
New Time (from the year
2006).
The material collected comprises of two fundamental parts. The first one deals with edu¬
cation. It is divided into two periods: the years
1940-1945
and
1945-2012.
The first period
illustrates consolidation
-
through columns of the press of Polish teachers and pupils in exile
who, by fate of the War, landed in Britain and other countries after the outbreak of the second
World War. Through press announcements and articles the chronology of the establishment
of Polish schools on the basic and secondary levels for soldiers of the Polish Armed Forces,
Polish Air Force, civilians and the running of economic, technical and vocational schools as
well as education through correspondence courses was confirmed. This is complemented by
the institutional character of the teachers activities, educational successes of the Polish youth
in the world as well as the campaign for Polish books and magazines collection for schools and
libraries in the post-war Poland. The period after the end of the second World War to
2012
delineates the general Polish educational system, Polish private schools, Saturday-schools for
the teaching
ornative
subjects in Britain and beyond, Polish pupils in Great Britain after the
year
2004 —
who appeared in the columns of the emigration magazines.
The second part depicts the propagation, by the editorial boards of the magazines in exile,
of higher education acquisition by Poles, which is also taken into perspective in the same two
time
-
periods. In the first period
-
the years
1940-1945
the cult of education manifests itself
in the calendar of activities of the Polish Government in Exile and the academic community to
organize Polish academic institutions abroad within the framework of British Universities. They
include: the Polish Faculty of Medicine in Edinburgh, Legal and Administrative School in St.
Andrews, Polish School of Architecture in Liverpool, Council of Technical Studies in London
(RAST),
Technical School in London, School of Foreign Trade in London, Trade and Admin¬
istration Training School in London. It analyses publications dealing with Polish academic life,

profiles
of Polish academicians, manifestations and propagandas of Polish sciences, protests and
scientists expression of solidarity with the Polish sciences mutilated by the Nazis.
The second period
-
from
1945
to the present day denotes the plight of Poles after the
allies withdrawal of recognition for the Polish Government in Exile, Polish education, forma¬
tion of divisions (eg. PWL) during the war, the fate of Polish students abroad, the establish¬
ment of new scientific institutions in London or the conversion of already existing ones: Polish
University College, School of Easel Painting, Office of Central and Eastern European Studies,
Research Institute on Home Affairs, Polish Scientific University in Exile, Polish Institute and
General Sikorski Museum,
Józef Pilsudski
Institute, various scientific associations as well as
the activities of the academic community at the Stefan
Batory
University in Vilnius, associa¬
tions of scientists and students, academic life in the various Western European countries, in
both Americas, Africa, Asia and Australia, commentaries on Polish sciences in the country as
well as the position of Polish students in foreign universities after the year
2004.
The author has shown that Polish emigration magazines have performed and are perform¬
ing, above all, an
informatory
function and serve as a link between the steadfast generation
and the successive waves of political or economic emigration. They play a significant role in
the propagation of education and the augmentation of educational competence. Conscious¬
ness formation, in order to arouse in compatriots the courage to study in British Universities
at any time. This is in line with the conviction that appropriate education at all levels exerts
an impact on the improvement of one s lot in exile.
It would seem that political changes taking place in the world for a decade since the end
of the second World War, the Polish political system transformation from
1989,
the admission
of Poland into NATO and as member of the European Union in
2004
should facilitate the
functioning of our compatriots in the educational arena abroad. Paradoxically these phe¬
nomena did not contribute to the improvement of Polish education and higher educational
institutions abroad. This situation has not changed as this sphere of life does not constitute
a subject of special concern for the Polish government. Although in other, decidedly, legal
situations, protected as citizens of the European community, than it was with the generation
of the present steadfast emigrants, they are still left to cater for themselves.
PUNO
is un¬
ceasingly on the verge of insolvency, not possessing a stable income, though taking preventive
measures to rectify this situation.
Polish schools teaching native subjects are dependent on the ingenuity and determination
of the teachers as well as parents of Polish children, rarely by the support of the local British
authorities. If our compatriots living in Britain will avail themselves of the opportunity of the
potentiality of the columns of the Polish press to consolidate the emigration environment in
order to institute an efficient Polish system of primary and secondary school education in exile
as well as maintain and strengthen the smallest University in the world with a

year tradi¬
tion will be seen in the near future. It will also be discerned whether this will end up on the
more and more universal phenomenon of forming internet scanning groups which in the
process of education effectively avoids contact with Gutenberg s Galaxy and as consequence
remain satisfied with trivial information generally available on the internet.
The saddest conclusion emerging from the analysis of the contents of the publications in
the Polish magazines in exile concerning education is the fact that the contemporary, over a
million Polish diaspora is incapable of achieving what the barely one hundred and sixty thou¬
sand emigrant community could create
—
a cohesive Polish Primary and Secondary school
educational system compatible with the British one.
