Abstract
Showing the functioning of the Corps District
№
VI between
1921-1939
raised compli¬
cated problem to study for Polish researchers. Many factors effects it, among which it is
important that these areas, because they were ethnically mixed, the role and tasks of the
army did not limited exclusively to the general framework. Besides, most of the documenta¬
tion mentioning to illustrate the activities of the Corps District
№
VI was destroyed during
World War
2,
and that survived, remained mostly outside current Polish borders.
The condition of research on the above-mentioned subject was not satisfactory, however
diverse military issues concentrated on the whole territory of interwar Republic of Poland.
Because of the condition of preserved resources of Polish archives, among others, partial
archival remains from Central Military Archives, scientific work defined in the title of the
examined subject was not possible without searching through Ukrainian archive documents:
Central National Historical Archives of Ukraine and district archives: National Archives of
Lvov District, National Archives of
Tarnopol
District and National Archives of Ivano-
Frankovsk District. Useful documents were also found in archives of London, UK.
This work was characterized from historical perspective in chronological and thematic
manner. The analysis was divided into six chapters. Functioning of General District Lvov
during the war realities was described in the First Chapter. In the Second Chapter the pro¬
cess of the crossing the Polish Army in the peace establishment was shown, as well as cre¬
ation of Corps Districts and characteristics of the territory, taking into consideration ethnic
and social structure. The next three chapters are the merits of the work, referring to the
nonviolent structures and powers of the Corps District Command, the characteristics of the
dislocated military units, everyday life issues and cooperation with the authorities of the
army, soldiers and civilians in the years
1921-1926,1926-1935
and
1935-1939.
The final chap¬
ter provides an analysis of the actions taken by Corps District
№
VI during the growing
danger of the war and illustrates the process of mobilization in the particular units from
East
Małopolska.
The main research problem of that monographic work was to establish the facts about
the functioning of the administrative apparatus of the Polish Army in the Corps District
№
VI and everybody connected with this fact. All of the elements relating to the organisa¬
tional structure of the
№
VI Corps District Command and general services were included,
as well as their changing roles and responsibilities during the discussed period. By the way,
the personal department of the management was reconstructed. In addition, the subject of

analysis have became issues such as dislocation, organization and the degree of training of
individual military units and ancillary services.
An additional aim of work was to show the relationship between the military authorities
of the civil administrative authorities and the local population while at the same time point¬
ing to the influence of the army on the defensive education society and then the analysis of
social moods. Moreover, there was shown the activity of the Lvov General District Com¬
mand during the Polish-Russian
1920
war and preparatory actions carried out in the area
administered by the
№
VI Corps District Command since the spring of
1939.
Between
1921-1939
Corps District
№
VI was one of ten military unit in Poland. The
administrative station was the subject area belonged to
№
VI Corps District Command placed
in Lvov and the chain of amenable to its territory agendas In
1921
Lvov District covered
37,400
square km, and after changing frontiers in
1927
and
1934
its territory raised to
41,900
square km.
According to the public list from
1921
almost
3,5
min
people lived within the Corp s fron¬
tiers, in
1931
there was
4,2
min
people, and the day before the World War
2
there were
4,5
min
of them. Within this number
48
per cent were men, they were
12,5
per cent of reserve for the
army in the scale of the country. Unfortunately, Poles were only
38
per cent from the general.
For the whole interwar period
№
VI Corps District Command was the main war insti¬
tution in East
Małopolska.
The chiefs standing on the Corps head had, according to their
ages, different prerogatives and competence. But, in general, they always had the control
over the dislocated military units, they controlled material, money and tax economy of
these formations witch took change of discipline and order, they were responsible for battle
training of soldiers (and troops) and taught preparing to military duties among the civilians.
The essential aim of the Corps chief was the constant cooperation with representatives of
the authorities and the local people.
The territory cooperation was possible thanks to particular military units dislocated in
different cities that were garrisons. Because of the army rebuilding in 1920 s in the area of

Infantry Divisions and

Cavalry Brigades were dislocated. It gave

Regiments and independent Artillery Battalions of different
kinds,

Aircraft Regiment and
1
Armoured Battalion.
From
1921
solders of all troops cooperated with the authorities and civilians, though
initially the military often was forced mainly to combat diversion. After
1926,
the right
cooperation of all sides started. The developing cooperation with every year involved new
sphere, of everyday life.
Every year Corps District Command trained the civilians in the preparing military duties,
and offered some time also in anti-aircraft and anti-gas defense. Till the beginning of the
World War
2
soldiers in the Polish Army in the East part of
Małopolska
gained great appre¬
ciation among the local people.
It was shown especially one day before the beginning of the war, as well as in its dura¬
tion and after finishing the war in Poland. First, the people supported the army in protect¬
ing the country, and then, after the outbreak of war, nourished the soldiers in the necessities
and took care of the wounded. Later, under the pressure of loosing their own lives, people,
hid and smuggled soldiers through the green border . Thanks to that situation soldiers could
continue the battle in the rebuilding the Polish Army in France. These events showed that

VI Corps District Command wasn t only the military administration and soldiers weren t
limited to doing orders and their duties. With people and the authorities the army created
well functioned state organism.
