Martin
Krpan
-
Diplomat and Soldier
A state-building interpretation of a focal Slovenian myth
Martin
Krpan
is the most important Slovenian myth, one that far surpas¬
ses the framework of literature, art, and history. He has become a Slovenian
national hero. It can be said that he captures and personifies the characteri¬
stics of the Slovenian mentality and its national character.
The writer Fran Levstik wrote the story of Martin
Krpan
from
Vrh
in the
spring of
1858,
and it was published in the summer
ofthat
year in the new¬
spaper
Slovenski Glasnik,
a newspaper that was edited by Anton
Janežič
and
printed in
Klagenfurt.
Until now, over almost seventy reprints in Slovenian
and almost eighty translations have been published; the first translation was
in Russian, published in the year
1888
in
Peterburg.
Through his incredible and simple story, Levstik set up an example of how
one should write; amongst other things, one must wrap the truth in a pleasant
joke . This truth, then, was a penetrating social criticism of the state of affairs
in the monarchy as well as in the Slovenian nation itself. His style is polished,
sharp, and originates from the peoples language, which was for Levstik the
basis of an emerging Slovene literary language. Fran Levstik remains as one of
the leading Slovenian writers, critics, and socially engaged intellectuals.
The story of
Krpan
is simple, and because of this contains layers of mea¬
ning, it reaches beyond its time and is appealing as well as educational: Martin
Krpan
is a simple farming man, strong and inventive as well as naturally
clever, who supported himself by smuggling the then-forbidden English salt
(which is most probably meant to have been a crucial ingredient for manu¬
facturing gunpowder). One winter, he encounters the Emperor on his travels,
meeting his carriage with his horse on a small, narrow countryside road
-
and
lifts up his horse, along with the load it carried, moving it to the side of the
road so the Emperor s carriage may pass. This impressed the Emperor, who
immediately took a liking to this man who was quick in his head and wise
with his words. After some time, a giant arrives in Vienna, besieging the city
and defeating anyone ~ and everyone
—
sent to fight him. They call
Krpan,
who was the last hope of the capital, the Empire, and the Emperor himself.
Krpan
comes up with a simple and yet cunning plan; he defeats him with a
137
club made of linden wood, into which the giant strikes with his sword and
is unable to pull it out. Because of the nature of his character
—
his clever¬
ness, his honesty, and his unwillingness to bow to the rules of the royal court
—
Krpan
also makes many enemies for himself. The club he used against the
giant was made from a young linden tree that
Krpan
cut down; this happe¬
ned to be the Empress favorite tree. No armour was good enough for
Krpan;
this did not do him any favours with any of the knights. The minister
Gregor
immediately dislikes him, both as a competitor and of course as a smuggler.
Only the Emperor was on his side
—
Krpan
had, after all, saved the Empire.
And perhaps he also saw in
Krpan
his possible successor, as he offered him
his daughter s hand in marriage. The story ends with
Krpan
negotiating for
himself an official seal, entitling him to transport English salt. To show his
gratitude to the Emperor, he promises to always be of service to him, if the
need arises; and in the end,
Krpan
leaves the royal court, the life there not
being a life for him.
Krpan
was not fond of work; this hinted at his desire to rid himself of
de¬
pendance
on the feudal class that owned the land and the farmer with it. He
is thus the symbol of an independent, self-confident and sovereign individual
—
which is also the basis of the modern state. He respects the ruler, but does
not fear him, and sees him as an equal. It is in this that one finds the visionary
aspect of Levstik s story, one that is also reflected in today s independent
Slovenia. The state-building interpretation of Martin
Krpan
-
written one
hundred and fifty-one years after the story s first appearance
—
is very impor¬
tant, both on a practical and a symbolic level.
This interpretation of Levstik s story searches in
Krpan
for the characte¬
ristics of a diplomat and a soldier. And he had many of these characteristics,
being naturally clever, quick, sly, as well as incredibly strong and experienced.
He knew how to negotiate, how to follow protocol, knew that one had to be
friendly and direct when dealing with nobility, and at other times indirect,
even sneaky. He used the wisdom of his home, and was very attached to it.
Yet he was also familiar with the world of nobility, its habits and conspiracies,
and thus knew how to avoid its problems and complications. He knew how to
deal with, and dispose of, an experienced and incredibly dangerous opponent,
playing off his weaknesses against his own advantages. He avoided a way of
fighting that would allow his opponent to gain the upper hand, forcing him
to fight on
Krparís
terms, against
Krpan
s
weapon, completely surprising him.
138
He was sharp and cold-blooded, when necessary, as well as a good reader of
people and did not allow his opponent s provocations to enrage him or drive
him to panic. By declining the throne at the end of the story
-
because he
loved his own way of life
-
he is shown not to be greedy. His value system was
honest, uncorrupted, and enabled him to
Uve a
satisfying life. The royal court
was for him only a job; he wanted to remain independent.
Through this interpretation, the author discovers that
Krpan
personified
the wisdom and lessons of Sun Tzu,
von Clausewitz,
as well as Satow and
Nicholson: he was a true professional, or so we would say today. He also pos¬
sessed one point in common with the philosophers of antiquity, who saw the
ruler in the person most capable for ruling but does not want to rule. By this
interpretation, we also see some characteristics of a statesman in
Krpan.
A challenging, original, and thorough look at a famous Slovenian literary
character from two new points of view convinces that Martin
Krpan
is a
story that reaches far out of its time, a multi-layered evergreen character and
story that continuously calls to be re-read and re-thought.
The author is
a carrer
diplomat, associate professor of diplomacy, and writer.
He is employed at the Slovenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Policy Planning
Director. He graduated from journalism and defense studies at the Faculty
of Social Sciences in Ljubljana and received his PhD from the University
of
Klagenfurt.
He was the first Slovene consul in
Klagenfurt
and minister
plenipotentiary at the Slovene Embassy in Stockholm. From December
2000
to November
2004,
he was the State Secretary for International Affairs and
Defence Policy at the Ministry of Defence. He has years of experience in
business, journalism, and politics. He is the author of more than fifty articles
and papers on diplomacy and security. He lectures at numerous universiti¬
es and is a member of various professional associations. In March
2005,
he
was awarded a high Austrian decoration
—
the Grand Golden Decoration of
Honour with Star for Merit for the Republic of Austria.
Martin
Krpan
