Summary
The Glazer Award and Glazer Credentials are recognitions of the Municipality of
Maribor
for distinctive production in the sphere of culture in this city along the
Drava
River. They have been granted since
1987.
Janko
Glazer
(Ruše,

1893 -
Ruše,

1975),
after whom
the award was named, was a poet, a literary and cultural historian, critic, translator
of poetry, editor, bibliographer and librarian. He graduated from classical gym¬
nasium in
1913
and studied at universities in
Graz,
Vienna, Zagreb and Ljublja¬
na. In
1920,
he started to teach Slovene and German languages at the classical
gymnasium in
Maribor.
From
1926,
he was a librarian in the Study Library in
Maribor,
and from
1931
to
22
April
1941 -
when the German dictators dismissed
him from service
-
he was its principal. During the German occupation, he and
his family were deported to Serbia. After his return to Slovenia in August
1945
and until his retirement in
1959,
he was again principal of the Study Library in
Maribor,
which needed renewal and modernisation according to the demands of
the developing university educational system. After retirement, he managed the
department of manuscripts.
He had already started to write poetry in elementary school. He published
three poetry collections: Pohorske
poti
[Pohorje Paths]
(1919),
Cas-kovac [Time-
Smith]
(1929),
Ob Jesenském ekvinokciju
[At the Autumnal Equinox]
(1946),
par¬
ticipated in the selection of Pesmi in
napisi
[Poems and Titles]
(1953,
19852) and
prepared the selection for the collection Pohorje
(1968).
In
1993,
the collection
Pesmi [Poems] was selected, edited and reviewed by his daughter Prof
Alenka Gla¬
zer.
In his poetry, he remained faithful to the traditions of Modern Art. Because
of his subtle images of the woody Pohorje highlands at the eastern margins of the
Alps, he has become known as its poet. He has edited several anthologies, written
many cultural and literary historical essays, discussions, critiques and notes that
are an important contribution to Slovene cultural and literary history. He also
studied the history of printing and newspaper production in
Maribor
and Slovene
Styria.
His comments on the lyric poetry of Oton
Župančič
are also very valuable.
His aesthetic evaluation of Slovene verbal art is especially subtle.
Year after year, Glazers versatile creativeness is remembered at the bestowal
of awards, which legitimately carry his name. They are granted to individuals or
groups of creative people
-
for life-time work and sometimes for individual excep¬
tional artistic achievements, which have promoted
Maribor
culture in a broader
region. The Glazer Credential is granted to individuals, groups of creative people,
companies and institutions, organisations and associations for cultural production

in different fields of creativity and post-creativity (literature, theatre, dance, fine
art, architecture, culture, design, photography, film, television, radio and inter¬
media art); for individual achievements in the field of the protection, preservation
and presentation of the natural and cultural heritage in the Municipality of
Mari¬
bor;
for particularly successful work over several years in mediating general cultural
values to the citizens of
Maribor;
for successful organisational work over several
years in stimulating and spreading cultural life in the Municipality of
Maribor;
and for important contributions to the development of contemporary theoreti¬
cal thoughts in the field of culture for the period of the last three years before the
bestowal or tender.
In the middle of the 1980 s,
Maribor
Cultural Community on the initiative of
Dr
Bruno
Hartman
discussed the necessity of such an award; based on the regula¬
tions adopted in
1987,
the first recognitions were to be granted under that name.
In the Republic of Slovenia, self-governing interest communities were dissolved,
yet the Glazer Awards were already in full force in
Maribor
cultural life, and so
were taken under the auspices of the Assembly of
Maribor,
which adopted the
appropriate decree in
1991.
Based on a public tender for the proposed prize-win¬
ners, the responsibility for the selection procedure is carried by the committee for
the bestowal of the Glazer Awards. The awards are granted on Glazer s birthday,
the 21st of March. This occurred for the first time in
1993
on the one hundredth
anniversary of his birth.
The evaluation of the effectiveness of a quarter-century-long Glazer Award tra¬
dition focuses on a pleiad of cultural creators who have received this recognition:

recipients of the main Glazer Award for life-time work and

recipients of
Glazer Credentials for outstanding artistic achievements. As expected, most of the
recipients of the Glazer Award are writers, for which the award s name stands as
well. They are followed by theatre, music and dance artists:
Maribor
holds a large
drama, opera and ballet institution of high quality, which has a strong impact on
the cultural level of the city. Fine art is represented by awards for life-time work
rather than by credentials.
Over the past twenty-five years, hundreds of Glazer prize-winners are succes¬
sors of creative careers that were anything but similar and easy. The environment,
predominantly of
Maribor,
played an important role in this. It was always ques¬
tioned, what did these creative minds give to
Maribor,
but we should ask ourselves
the opposite as well: has the city repaid them gratefully enough?
With this book, which illustrates and describes the selected personalities who
contributed and sacrificed a great deal for the culture of
Maribor,
we are justifi¬
ably heading towards the year
2012,
when
Maribor
is going to be the European
Capital of Culture. Thanks to these people, we think of
Maribor
as a significant
place in European cultural life and thus remain on Europe s cultural map as an
internationally recognised cultural centre.
The European Capital of Culture
2012
is an opportunity for
Maribor
to show,
why Europe cannot exist without Slovene creative minds. The city itself needs that
recognition as well, since its importance for Europe has not yet been realised. The
creative energy of the varied palette of prize-winners, which also met a worldwide
response, has already formed a prolific cultural climate in
Maribor
by siding with
its firm and substantial foundation. Undoubtedly, the Glazer recognitions will
continue to stimulate and inspire in the future.
