THE CHRONICLES OF YAMBA
COLONIAL EXPERIENCE IN CAMEROON
1884-1961
The basis, nature and place of European colonization and development
of Africa have for long engaged imperialist, nationalist,
marxist,
dependentist, pluralist and
constructivist
conversations. Although
sustaining different narratives thereto, these approaches platform on
superiority, civilisation and exploitation premises in the understanding
of the colonial experience and the present condition of the African
continent.
This book is, therefore, an endeavour that situates the Yamba1 of
Cameroon in that general chronicle of the African colonial experience.
In an effort to achieve their goals in Cameroon, Germans and British
staged a range of performances among the Yamba'. These performances,
in tangible and intangible ways, re-shaped the people's pre-colonial
story by submitting them to new perceptions and interpretations
of, and reactions to existence from politics, economy and culture
to sexuality, psychology and representation. Not overemphasizing
the worth of colonialism as a "parenthesis, an episode or footnote
that altered the African society only slightly", such an episode left
unforgettable memories among the Yamba'.
Mark BoLak Funteb is a Senior Lecturer of History at the Higher
Teachers' Training College of the University ofMaroua, Cameroon. He
is author ¿/"Missionary Contribution to and/or Modification of the
Yamba Traditional Society of Cameroon
1914-2000:
A Historical
Investigation, and has published a series of articles in both national
and international scientific journals.
