The monograph, Histórie české sociálni práce (1918-1948) (History of
Czech Social Work between 1918-1948), provides an overview of the
development of social work in three historical eras: between 1918-1938,
during the “First Republic” between 1938-1945, during the “Second
Republic” and the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, and between
1945-1948, during the “Third Republic”. While many countries have sys-
tematically studied the history of their social work, this is not the case
in the Czech Republic, although the almost forgotten, rarely referred to
and practically unused history of the Czech social work represents inspi-
rational material for the current form of this profession.
Information on the origins of this profession can be found in archives,
literature published at the time as well as from peoples’ accounts of the
job at the examined period. All of these resources have been employed
in the preparation of this book, which particularly focuses on the pro-
fession of social worker in Czechoslovakia during the “First Republic”
period, its forgotten achievements regarding the acceptance of the disci-
pline, the development of its educational system and the application of
theories and methods in public and private practices. The book further
describes the tasks and roles of the organization of female social workers,
established as the need had arisen to define the scope of the “new” pro-
fession in relation to other professions with longer traditions, to deter-
mine their mutual cooperation and to defend its own specialty. During
its existence, the Organization of Female Social Workers, a professional asso-
ciation of female social workers, fulfilled these and many other roles,
which later led to the development and promotion of Czech social work
as an independent profession.
Towards the end of the “Second Czechoslovak Republic” and
during the war, which suspended or reduced some of the organization s

activities, three essential demands, formulated by social workers at their
congress in 1934, were met: “(1) that social work was considered to be an
independent profession, which would be perceived as part of public life,
relevant to its importance for national culture, economic balance and
healthy social development of the democratic state, (2) that a system of
independent social education was developed, based on social sciences
and which would reflect the real needs of the social work (care) discipline
and become part of the university system, provided for by the state, both
financially and professionally, and (3) that social work was considered
to be a specialized occupation and, as such, entrusted only to those with
prescribed professional qualifications, and that female social workers in
public and private practices were placed into a category commensurate
with their level of education.”
Apart from the above, this monograph also renders a detailed descrip-
tion of the development of Czech social care as it was perceived, through-
out the “First Republic” period, as a theoretical foundation for practical
social work. Further, it provides an insight into education in the field
of social work, which would not have developed immediately after the
establishment of the new state if it was not for the demands of the social
care representatives, activities of the Czechoslovak Red Cross and the
unrelenting work of Alice Masaryk. Individual chapters are devoted to
the theory and methods which are essential for social work to become
an independent discipline. The final section of the monograph outlines
the development of the profession and describes what the everyday and
professional life of a social worker should look like.
This monograph will be useful for the present day social workers
who, apart from becoming acquainted with the outset of their profession
as a discipline, can find here inspiration for social work activities in their
communities, social work in schools or use it as part of their continuing
education.
