Summary
The monograph, intended to present the history of Jędrzejów in the years 1795-
1918, consists of six chapters. In the first one, entitled Miasto, ale jakie? (What Kind
of Town ?), I discuss the changes in the legal status of Jędrzejów, with a special
attention to the transformation of the town from the private-church ownership
into a state town and the loss and regaining of the town rights. In the second
chapter, Przestrzeń miejska (Town Space), I dealt with the question of the town
borders and town planning changes within. Chapter three, entitled Gospodarka
miejsca (Town's Economy), has been dedicated to issues of the trade, crafts and
industry development. In the fourth chapter, entitled Mieszkańcy (The Inhabit-
ants), a discussion of the number and social composition of Jędrzejów popula-
tion is contained, with a special emphasis on the Jewish settlement and the so-
cial changes that phenomenon had brought about. In the fifth chapter, Instytucje
(Institutions), I present the history of the offices and social organisations existing
in the town at the time. The publication has been completed with the chapter
Życie Miasta (The Town's Life), in which I discuss the most important events of
the social, cultural and political life experienced by the inhabitants of Jędrzejów
throughout the 19th century.
Adapting the problem composition of the monograph allowed for under-
standing the political, social and civilisation changes undergoing in Jędrzejów
throughout the 19th century.
Undoubtedly, Jędrzejów in the 19th century fulfilled various functions, how-
ever - and that should be clearly emphasised - the functional character of the
town changed in the course of time. In the first quarter of the 19th century, i.e.
until the cassation of the Cistercian monastery, Jędrzejów was an economic and
administrative centre of the monastery property with a highly developed trade
function. Nevertheless, fairs that took place in the town had only a local scope
of operation. Following the Cistercian monastery suppression, the town lost its
property centre function, as the abbey possessions had been taken over by the
treasury of the Kingdom of Poland and successively sold out.
The changes undergoing in Jędrzejów starting from the 20s of the 19lh cen-
tury caused the town to gain new functions. First and foremost, the privilege of
two eight-day horse fairs made Jędrzejów a trade centre of the regional, or even

international importance. Twice a year masses of merchants from over the King-
dom of Poland, and even Russia and Austria, attended the fairs. Due to that the
town flourished and its inhabitants grew rich.
Speaking of the economic issues, it is worth mentioning that Jędrzejów was
not a typical trade town. The horse fairs took place only twice a year, and the
weekly fair, called the peasant fair, did not bring a profit large enough to make
trade the main source of income for the inhabitants. Some people lived off crafts
and the majority lived off the land. Therefore, taking into account the whole
of the economic issues, one might argue that for most of the time Jędrzejów
was a trade-craft-agricultural town that became a trade centre only during the
St.John's and St.Michael's fairs.
In the course of the 19th century Jędrzejów became also a judicial and admin-
istrative centre. The town gained that function after the location of the poviat
authorities. For the first time Jędrzejów was made the poviat capital during the
Duchy of Warsaw times, however the period was too short to affect the town's
development to a greater extent. A more important fact was the establishment of
the poviat as a result of the imperial administrative reform of 1867. At that time
Jędrzejów, though formally deprived of town rights, fulfilled the function of a
large administrative and judicial centre. That state of affairs prevailed until 1918.
While discussing the town functions of Jędrzejów one cannot forget the fact
it was an important religious centre due to several factors. First of all, Jędrzejów
was the deanery capital, secondly, it was the seat of the Cistercian monastery,
and thirdly, in the Cistercian church the cult of the Blessed Wincenty Kadłubek
developed. The most important factor for developing a strong religious position
of Jędrzejów was the cult of Blessed Wincenty Kadłubek which, it seems, flour-
ished in the second half of the 19th century. At that time the post-Cisterian mon-
astery and the town itself attracted masses of the faithful, several thousand of
whom attended the annual church fair celebration in veneration of the Blessed.
Examining the history of Jędrzejów one should also mention that within al-
most 200 years the town had undergone a great evolution, transforming from
a small, unimportant settlement into a quite large town centre of a greater than
just regional significance. The deciding factor was the almost tenfold increase of
the number of inhabitants as the result of the unrestrained inflow of Jews and
newcomers from the neighbouring villages, particularly in the last decades of
the 19th century.
However, the increase of the population was not the only factor affecting the
development and modernisation of Jędrzejów. The politics of the Kingdom of
Poland authorities also contributed to that, especially the town regulation ac-
tion, realised in the 20s of the 19th century, that consisted in settling the towns'
boundaries, working out their urban development and founding a strong basis
for their material development. In the case of Jędrzejów the action caused the
original settlement gradually transformed into a quite modem urban centre. The
so called regulation plan and the privilege of organising two eight-day horse
fairs were of key importance. The plan, worked out by Marian Potocki, set the
directions of the town's extension (it should be added here that the street net-
worked marked out at the time exists to this day). Paving of the streets and

squares, successively realised from the 20s of the 19th century, completed the
process. The horse fairs, in turn, became the stimulating factor for the economic
development for decades.
The building the Iwanogrodzko-Dąbrowska Railway was of a similar im-
portance for the town's development. Thanks to that investment Jędrzejów ac-
quired another value of a communicative centre. Small and large factories and
trade storages quickly sprouted in the railway station neighbourhood. That in-
fluenced the town plan in the long-term perspective, as the industrial district
began to take shape.
The changes mentioned above had naturally the influence on Jędrzejów in-
habitants. Throughout the 19th century the structure of the town's population
undergone a diametrical change. At the end of the 18th century and at the be-
ginning of the 19th century Jędrzejów was a denominationally and nationally
homogeneous town, inhabited by only Christian townsmen. A hundred years
later Jews constituted half of the population and the social structure mirrored
the undergoing changes. New social groups were formed: the intelligentsia, the
petit bourgeoisie and labourers.
