s Love for Love
(1695)
This comedy is set in Restoration England when Charles II, the
Merry Monarch11, sat on the throne and the Stage was enjoying a
revival after the hard times under Oliver Cromwell when the
Theatre was condemned as the devil»
s
work. The theme of this play
is, therefore, very little to do with religion and morality but
rather the attitudes of society, worldly, frivolous, sophisticated,
and money-mad. Love for Love is an exciting and hilariously funny
blend of love, sex, madness, fast-moving intrigue, and villainy-
Most of the characters are worldly-wise, not even the two lovers,
Valentine and Angelica, are naive romantics but are quite a
match for the debt-collectors, fortune-hunters and one very harsh
and tyrannical father. Relatives and friends set in motion
treacherous plots to obtain the fortunes of Angelica, Valentine
and Valentine s brother, honest sailor Ben. Mrs. Frail and Mr.
Tattle, older and more cynical, veterans of numerous love affairs,
threaten the happiness of Valentine and Angelica but are most
successful with the two innocents of the play, 3en and
Miss Prue.

monster is equally an outsider and impatient with all
the trickery that goes on around him. Valentine, however, accepts
the way society works and his pose of raadness to outwit his father
and his creditors is a delightfully clever twist to the play.
Angelica survives in this world through her woman s wiles, not her
innocence. In any case, this is a comedy ana the wickedness is thus
prevented from having disastrous consequences. It is a comedy of
manners and our expectations of unforgettable comic characters
are met in I. Ir
