SUMMARY
The B'nai B'rith Order was established in United States of America
in
1843
as a secession from regular American Freemasonry. The aim of
the newborn Order it was reconciliation of Jewish fractions Sefardian
and Askenazy living in USA often bothered with
dissention
and quarrel.
At the beginning of its existence B'nai B'rith was focused on charity
mostly and with time was able to create such well institutions like Hillel
Foundation and Anti-defamation League. The first European lodge was
founded in
1882
in Berlin and in
1892
on the polish territory in Cracow.
At the end of thirties B'nai B'rim Order was gathering about half of
million members. And here it could be asked the question about the
reasons why freemasons Jews decided to abandon regular lodged and
to create their own ones. They used to respond themselves that it was
caused by the too big engagement in politics of the entire American
Masonry. But it could probable that the reason remained in the charac¬
ter of ritual influenced a lot by Christian symbolism.
The B'nai B'rith Order adopted from Freemasonry an idea of struc¬
ture based on lodges. In every country where B'nai B'rith resided it
was organized in frames of District All lodges of the District were
governed by the Grand Lodge. At the head of the Grand Lodge there
was a President of the Lodge established, not a Grand Master like in
Freemasonry. But the role played in the Lodge by the President and
two vice
-
presidents were almost copied functions of Masonic Grand
Master and Wardens.
The B'nai B'rith Lodges didn't cultivate the symbolic character of
Freemasonry, which consider their Lodges as an image of cosmos and
universe. At least nothing suggests such sort of junctions in the ritual
of first degree. As in Freemasonry Lodges can be found such symbolic
objects as the square, compasses and the Bible (called Grand Lights)
and architecture's columns, the B'nai B'rith lodge contained Menorah,
an altar, Arch with two winged Cherubim, tablets of rights and one
object common for both types of lodges, the Bible lying on the altar.
However both Freemasonic and B'nai B'rim lodges acknowledged the
symbolic meaning of Temple for their lodges with the visible connota¬
tion to Temple of Jerusalem in both cases.
But B'nai B'rith entirely rejected the legend about Master Hiram
Abiff the builder of Salomon Temple. This legend lays as a root, source
of division for Masters, Fellows of Craft and Apprentices in Freema¬
sonry. From this legend also derives rich Masonic symbolism, in ac-

cordance

Masonie
work for the whole humanity is understood
as a symbolic building Salomon Temple.
What was also taken from Masonic ritual it was the ceremony of
initiation, with visibly marked moment of entering brotherhood and
leaving "profane world" of uninitiated. The B'nai B'rith candidate
wasn't going through cardinal ordeals of four elements practiced by
Freemasonry but he was experiencing circumambulations around the
lodge room following the brother with stick in his hand like as Moses.
The B'nai B'rith candidate was waiting for his admission in a ante
—
room where he was supposed to sign the declaration of entering the
Order what must have been a kind of paraphrase of Masonic Cabinet
of reflection and me philosophical testimony signed there.
In the B'nai B'rith president's speech there was highlighted the
meaning of a new link added to the brotherly chain by admission of
a new brother. This foremost for Freemasonry symbol was overtaken
by B'nai B'rith and used and symbolic, philosophy of the Order and in
a process of shaping the attitudes. The head motto of the Order there
was a symbolic triad Benevolence, Harmony and Brotherly Love. The
candidate's hand were tied with a cord which was supposed to express
the ages of slavery and a bromer handling a stick and leading a candi¬
date around the lodge was playing a symbolic role of Moses. The moral
was clear; when the candidate follows the Moses who led out his nation
from Egypt and everything what his stick indicates, when he respects
Tablets of Law and dualism of human nature represented by Cheru¬
bim, than, the candidate will regain freedom. As a B'nai B'rith brother,
as a Jew and as a man, because an allusion to human life as a journey
was also evident.
The B'nai B'rith candidate
-
exactly like a candidate to Freemason¬
ry
-
was asked to make a pledge to obey the law of the Order. The
pledge was made in the presence of all brothers members of the lodge,
which was gathering round the candidate forming the symbolic circle.
During this ceremony the David's Psalm was sung and the words of
Old Testament covenant between God and holy people repeated. This
covenant
-
Berith
-
is developing for contemporary times and is being
renewed
ali
over again.
When the candidate was already accepted, the President demon¬
strated him the Tablets of Law and explained him in a long lecture the
meaning of the Tablets how they respond to the covenant between
God and the nations of the earth not only the Israel alone. The Pres¬
ident also was mentioning the significance of Arch with Cherubim
which is a symbol of life (in almost every tradition) and winged Cher¬
ubim a symbol of duality of human nature, as every man is composed
of body and soul. The last object which was discussed during the cere¬
mony of initiation it was Menorah seven branches chandelier appealing
172
Summary
to the tree of life symbolic. The President was lighting all the light of
Menorah end saying the word meaning a different value stopping at
each light, the same he was referring its significance.
At the end he was summing up the ceremony stressing the fact, that
it was consisting of two parts, the ritual and the lecture with interpreta¬
tion. The ritual ceremony was an scene of Exodus from Egypt includ¬
ing active participation of candidate and end a brother playing role of
Moses with his leading stick. This ceremony was important thanks to its
historical dimension
-
as it was reminding
od
coming out of slavery by
Jewish nation and was giving hope for future for all Jews, and spiritual
dimension telling about the possibility and necessity of coming out of
slavery by every human being, no matter what kind of slavery it is; fear,
superstition, obscurantism etc.
But the lecture of President was focused on the historical aspect
mainly. The new accepted candidate was supposed to follow the Mo¬
ses' stick and be a member of holy people. The B'nai B'rith mem¬
bers mission was directed to all the nations and concerned not only
spreading peace and justice but also preaching Judaism as a universal
religion, which Judaism truly was, in opposition to Islam or Christian¬
ity. The initiation of B'nai B'rith member was finished with traditional
blessing given by President to the new accepted member and all the
brothers.
The B'nai B'rith ritual took many plots from history of Israel, Ju¬
daism and its tradition and from the Masonic tradition as well reaching
the European culture of initiation and its anthropological, hermetic and
symbolic meaning. In this term the role and significance of Freemason¬
ry ritual is alike.
The separate problem there is a reach correspondence of B'nai
B'rith brothers concerning their attitude to the ritual. There is no doubt
they were very attached to the ceremonies in the lodge, they estimated
its dignity and grave role uniting fraternity. The ritual scenes always
were accompanied with deep emotions. The moment of initiation was
remembered by brothers as one of the most appealing and touching
experience of their lives.
