SUMMARY
The
Toplica
Uprising was a significant event in the history of Serbian
people during World War One. It was the only greater revolt behind
the front lines. The uprising broke out in the south of Serbia, by the
end of February
1917,
and it lasted for about a month. It started in
Toplica
and Jablanica, later spreading to the nearby areas.
In autumn
1915,
united armies of central forces undertook a success¬
ful offensive for the occupation of Serbia. Without any allied help, Serbian
army was forced to withdraw across Albania and Greece. Serbia was divided
into two occupational zones, by Austria-Hungary and Bulgaria. Each of the
forces formed their own administrative organs in the occupied teritory.
Serbian people were exposed to pillage, requisition, interment.
Denationalization was the chief aim of Bulgarian aggressors. They wanted to
bulgarize the population, and annex the occupied territory to Bulgaria.
The occupied population did not wish to reconcile with the situation.
They expected a fast return of the Serbian army. This hope was strengthened
by Romania s entering the war on side of the Allies, in
1916.
As there had not
been a breakthrough at Thessalonica front, some individuals took weapons
and went into the woods, organizing a resistance to the aggressors. In sum¬
mer
1916.,
Kosta
Vojinovic, second Lieutenant in the Serbian army, organ¬
ized a resistance movement in Kosanica region, and formed his troops in
Leposavic. The headqurters of the Serbian army had information considering
the events in the occupied region. By the end of September
1916,
the head¬
quarters sent
Kosta
Pecanac, a reservist infantry lieutenant, by plane, from
Thessalonica front, with a mission to form a secret resistance organization,
which would start combat once Thessalonica front has been broken through.
This group later played an important role in the organization of the
uprising, and also in the uprising itself.

There were many events, which could provoke an armed revolt.
However, there was only one motive- the order of Bulgaria to recruit capable
Serbs, aged
18-40
to fight on the side of Bulgarian army. This, Serbian peo¬
ple would not accept; they rebelled and went into the woods instead of
answering the call of recruiting. The first armed conflicts between Serbian
draftees and Bulgarian pursuits began.
In order to form unique chetnik-rebel organization, it was necessary
to hold meetings of all querilla leaders; at those meetings, it would be decid¬
ed if an uprising would be undertaken or not. The meeting, ettented by

guerilla leaders, was held in
Obilie
village, on Febrary
21.
and february
22,
1917.
At this meeting, central committee was formed, and Pecanac remained
its president. Four committee detachment s actions were formed and their
commanders chosen. Regions for the detachment s actions were determined
and the decision for undertaking the uprising was made.
There happened an armed conflict of Jablanica committee detach¬
ments and the Bulgarians, two days after this meeting, on february
24, 1917,
near
Bojnik.
In the village of Mackovac, near Kursumlija, the villages and the
aggressor s gendarmes came into conflict.
In Kursumlija, the armed fights began on February
26,
and the rebels
liberated this town on february
28.
Kosta
Vojinovic proclaimed the begin¬
ning of the uprising. There was shooting everywhere. Lebane was liberated
on March
1,
Prokuplje on March
3,
Blace on March
5.
The uprising spread to other regions. The rebels liberated Vlasotince,
Crna Trava,
and
Ribar
Spa. The regions of Zaplanje, Soko Spa, Svrljig and
Vranje also felt the effects of the uprising. In a few days, the rebels created a
liberated territory the committee state with its seat in Prokuplje. This terri¬
tory spread in the radius of
80
kilometers.
At the beginning of the rebellious
activités,
the aggressor did not
attribute any greater importance to these activities. Still, when the uprising
had proved to be important, and a free territory created, united aggressors,
forces came to the liberated territory with the aim of suppressing the upris¬
ing. About
13000
insufficiently armed rebels could not defend what they had
liberated and the uprising was suppressed. Bulgarian army entered Prokuplje
without any fight, on March
14, 1917.
The aggressors, forces had occupied
the territory again, but they had not succeed in destroying the guerilla. Many
rebellious groups had withdrawn to mountains and used to attack the aggres¬
sors from there.
The aggressor s soldiers were terrorizing and taking revenge against
the population living in the occupied territory. The nature of the terror being
exerted was of a kind, which had never before been remembered in the his¬
tory of mankind.

After
the uprising had been put down, a group around
Kosta
Vojinovic displayed the strongest resistance. His death on
december
23,
1917,
marked the end of guerilla fight.
Thus it was obvious that the uprising had been completely sup¬
pressed.
The aggressor s soldiers took severe revenge on the population of the
rebellious territory. Over
20000
people were killed in various ways, over
5000
objects burnt down, certain villages in
Toplica
and Jablanica disap¬
peared from the geographical map.
