Pleasures, passions and preferences
Summary
The first part of this joint publication, derived from the Poland-wide interdiscipli¬
nary conference of the academics and academic youth at all levels, includes twenty-one
articles mainly devoted to various aspects of the ordinary nature, and to some extent,
also occasional moments of lives of people in the 18th century. The issues dealt with
in this work correspond to the latest research tendencies within the historical research
area. The authors concentrated on above all various pleasures and passions of the
Enlightenment people, inscribing into the established rhythm of everyday living, but
also bring a series of aspects and manifestations of interesting preferences, entertain¬
ment, games and other issues having all the hallmarks of the festive, occasional and
exceptional phenomena closer.
The article by
Agata Roćko,
opening the volume, outlines perspectives from which
the products of the material culture in the 18th century are perceived nowadays, deriv¬
ing from necessity, luxury or snobbery, and being peculiar hallmarks of such values
desired by the Polish gentry as position, splendour, and honours. Barbara
Arabas,
bas¬
ing on pictures and graphics by Giuseppe Zocchi from the
Opificio delie Pietre Dure
museum in Florence, discusses outdoor games (among others playing on the swing,
badminton, arch shooting, and billiards) that were very popular in the 18th century and
have retained topicality until now. Another form of entertainment was touched upon by
Adam Bukowski, paying attention to the activity of Warsaw Opera houses at the time of

Looking at various problems connected with the royal stage from the perspec¬
tive of the public allowed him to bring particular spectator behaviours closer, as well as
draw a conclusion on an early-democratic nature of the court theatre of the last Wettin
on the Polish throne. Interests people in the 18th century manifested in prognostics, is¬

18th century is also considered by
Jacek Szpak
reflecting upon organization, structure
and development of libraries of the Polish Paulines in the 18th century. The analysis of
manuscript library inventories coming from

convents is a basis for conclusions on an
intellectual level of monks, as well as their reading needs and preferences.
Another group of texts is initiated by
Danuta Kowalewska,
devoted to Jan
Bohomolec s struggle with faith in visits of guests from the beyond popularised in
the Enlightenment period. The author brings the relations concerning visions closer,
and synthetically presents the priest s arguments who was trying to combine the idea
of progressive trends of the Enlightenment with the doctrine of the Catholic Church.
Małgorzata Marcinkowska,
on the other hand, discussed various aspects of everyday life
inscribed in poetic prayers of writers in the 18th century and at the beginning of the
19th century. Her considerations included the following common areas of conversation
with God: time, death, work, nature, and interpersonal relations. Works written for the
purposes of passion services, on the other hand, caught Anna Malinska s attention, who
made a comparative analysis of three publications of this type, looking for prototype
elements in their construction taken into account in later analogical works.
Two following articles consist of detailed and synthetic discussions of the issues
connected with the material shape and role of the luxurious choices in life of the soci¬
ety in the Enlightenment period. Interesting remarks presented by
Magdalena Bożena
Toczyńska
concerning jewellery at that time, and in-depth considerations made by
Agata
Roćko,
concentrating on various manifestations of fascinations people in this very period
had with porcelain, enriches an attractive illustrative material.
Beata Garlej,
on the other
hand, bases her considerations on two novels by
Ignacy Krasicki,
covering fundamental
changes that took place in culinary preferences of the gentry society those days. The
author paid attention to relations between attachment to the native cuisine as well as
food habits and interest in foreign specialties.
Magdalena Górowska
worked on descrip¬
tions and praises of feasts, entertainment and recreation in a friend s circle, located in
the reality of Spas village, retained in poetry by father
Józef Morelowski.
The sources of
inspiration of the Arcadian convention used by the Jesuit poet from
Połock
are looked
for by the author in the tradition from Czarnolas.
The next, numerous series of dissertations, cover ways of perceiving and express¬
ing love and eroticism in poetry by the renowned and less known authors in the
Enlightenment era.
Beata Prokopczyk
deals with the very issue, analyzing idyllic by
Franciszek Zabłocki
noticing both shepherds elements and Arcadian motives, as well as
clear elements of the native colouring, overcoming the schematic nature of an idyllic con¬
vention. Anna Petlak, on the other hand, analysed works by
Wincenty Ignacy Marewicz,
being a literary documentation of love the poet felt for Barbara Jelska, a daughter of the
starost
in
Pińsk
at that time. The author placed the writer in biography and discussed
the main issues dealt with by him in relation with the feelings felt for the beloved,
thus, paying attention to a complex genological nature of the works under investigation.
Dominika Swiątoniowska,
on the other hand, referring to the elements of the world of
eroticism and tales, placed her reflection on the rococo works by the Enlightened writ¬
ers in an interestingly characterised space of the boudoir, as well as in the monastery
scenery. In the vision of love, outlined in texts, she looks for serious questions on the
nature of a human being and the possibility of its subjugation as the source of pleasure

and play. The last two articles in this series of works are devoted to the erotic writings
by
Stanisław Trembecki,
functioning in the manuscript circulation.
Magdalena Patro-
-Kucab, on the other hand, made a detailed analysis of two epithalamions, paying at¬
tention to the allusive and modern nature of the poetics of description of the scenes of
sexual relations of the newly-wed, accentuating the common right of a man and woman
to physical pleasures.
Grażyna Filip,
on the other hand, conducted a linguistic typology
and analysis of erotic lexis and metaphors of the works written by a royal chamberlain,
functioning in a narrow aristocratically-informal circulation.
In the last group of texts the authors describe literary profiles of women of the „age
of lights , concentrating on the aspects of their functioning in various social groups.
Weronika Pawlik-Kwaśniewska,
making use of the categories worked out by long-lasting
feminism, presented a titled character of one of the novels by
Michał Dymitr Krajewski
as the subject of an educational experiment initiated by a father.
Jacek Głażewski,
on
the other hand, basing on diary records by Marie-Jeanne Roland outlined her image in
a detailed way, in which the authentic fascination with literature shaping the author s
opinions on religion, morality and revolution, plays a significant role.
Monika Urbańska
observes the creation of the female characters in novels, paying, at the same time, at¬
tention to an educational and moralizing dimension of these performances, sometimes
inspired by the writer s biography. The text closing the volume by
Jolanta Kowal
pays at¬
tention to the images of women outlined in one of the novels by
Józef Ignacy Kraszewski.
She brings the methods by means of which the writer exposes immorality, the lack of
patriotism and degenerated traditions of the representatives of aristocracy closer on the
one hand, and pure morality of the representatives of other social groups on the other.
