The present
work brings novelty regarding the
history of old books and libraries from the North-
Western territory of Romania, augmenting or reshaping
the history
ciť
this subject, written by other expert
predecessors: priest Dr. Virgi] Maxim, prof. Dr. Viorel
Faur,

Dudas,
Dr.
Constantin
Malinas,
Dr.
Emődi
András.
Without drawing some forced or improper
conclusions, the studies in this book make an analysis on
a multi-domanial ti^ld
-
history, theology and sociology
-
gathering from these three plans the perspective on old
book and libraries. If, exteriorly, we speak about the
circulation of old books from one geographical area to
another or their use during the liturgical service in a time
interval by a priest or a teacher-cantor who note their
names down on the pages of the book, interiorly, or
better said related to the theological and philosophic
content, our analysis is centered on the teachings of the
Church
-
present not only in the liturgical texts, but also
in the homiletic texts
-
that have as final goal the
guidance of the believers towards an authentic Christian
life and their preparation for the Kingdom of Heaven.
The first study, dedicated to the history of
censorship wants to be a decipherment of censorship
throughout time and the understanding of the
mechanisms that have led to its implementation and
function, institution that, at least for the Occidental space
and partly for the East-European one, was related to the
Holy See^ the main Christian center that implemented
censorship after the emergence of writing. The approach

analytical perspective for the area of the

intends to be an advocacy also for the
common reader, revealing the fact that during the ages
before the emergence of writing

each printed book was
compulsory subjected to a „finishing process or
purification

we believe, not only dogmatic for the
religious books, but also of the literary and grammatical
content

that aimed at eliminating as many elements as
possible that could lead to the author s condemnation or
unpopularity, but also of the institution he was related to
(school, church etc.)
The second study is dedicated to the most
important Romanian printed homiletic work of the time,
that was most spread, and namely Varlaam
s
Homiliary
(1643)
or Romanian Book of Sermons, its analysis not
being limited only to a chronological listing of events, but
opening a theological approach. The work emphasizes
the importance of attending the Holy Sacraments in the
Christian s life, visible signs of Godvs presence among
people, that are fundamentally related to the declaration
of the true belief (Orthodoxa Fide)

very important in a
century when the Romanians from Transylvania were in
danger of being completely co-opted under the umbrella
of the Protestant Reform. The purpose of this Romanian
printed work is to defend the main characteristics of the
Romanian traditional denomination
-
apostolic
orthodoxy
-
that, for the 17th century, comes with a
counterweight to the Romanian theological literature
from Transylvania
-
not only liturgical, but also homiletic
-
that considerably developed under the
Calvinist
influence.

Schematismi within the collections of Gheorghe
Sincai ^County Library of
Bihor.
Being an achievement
of the Austrian system, the
schematismus
appeared by
the half of the 18th century as a result of reformatory
measures taken by Vienna authorities. The
schematismus
has been mainstreamed within the illuminist fashion of
the time and has represented a visit card of a well-
organized institution, be it a secular or an ecclesiastic
unity. By these reformatory plans, the Viennese Court
pursued to systemize and organize all the divisions of
society. That for, a way to set up a grading structure of
its different institutions, was to incorporate them into the
printed book, which is at a higher level than the
manuscripts. By means of the patent of 1st of August
1727,
and then by that of 11th of June
1770,
the Viennese
Court has introduced the schematism as a compulsory
means and base of printed information for all secular and
ecclesiastic institutions belonging to its territory. It had to
contain the list of domains (properties), commodities and
names of the persons.
The present study is recommended as a thorough
research on printed information generically called
schematismi within the collections of Gheorghe
Şincai
County Library of
Bihor,
were a number of

samples
has been identified. The research aims to bring to light
their importance for the library science, as well as for the
documentation and information purposes, as the subject
in discussion abides to a severe lack of information.
Within the following chapters we have explored mostly
the secular and Romanian (Greek Catholic and
Orthodox) schematismi. In a future study we would

which are present
in a greater number that the other ones.
Books of worship and religious piety
(1850-1900)
in the Greek-Catholic Eparchy of Oradea-Mare
(1850-
1900).
Once with the Union with the Roman-Catholic
Church, the Romanian Greek-Catholics used in parallel,
not only the old Orthodox books of worship published in
Râmnic
and Bucharest, but also the Greek-Catholic ones,
published in
Blaj
and
Buda.
We note the fact that, in the
19th Century, the Greek-Catholic parishes have used
both those of Orthodox provenance, much less
numerically, in parallel with the Greek-Catholic ones
printed in the printing house from
Blaj,
their purchase
being made by private initiatives (priest, teacher,
community) or by the churches. Almost until the end of
the 19th century, books of worship printed with Cyrillic
alphabet were used, those with Latin alphabet being used
by parishes in the last two decades of that century. The
use of those with Cyrillic alphabet is proven by the event,
property and religious notes present on them. Removing
the books written with Cyrillic alphabet and their
replacement with those printed with Latin alphabet was
a long and lasting process caused, on one hand, by the
editorial policy of the ecclesiastical institution, which
only in
1872
regulated the printing of all the religious
books written with Latin alphabet and, on the other
hand, due to the rural mentality, quite unwilling to
change, especially since the new editions of the
Litourgicon from
1870
and the Epistle Book from
1878,
adopted new formulas, excessively Romanized, which is
another reason for their acceptance with a dose of
restraint. In addition, one must also take into account the

financial situation of the poor parishes, that could not
afford to purchase the new printed books printed by the
printing house from
Blaj,
using the ones they held.
Regarding the piety literature, in the second half of
the 19th century, the Greek-Catholics used the old
devotions of Byzantine tradition (Chapel of Virgin Mary
and various Akathists) that were in the books of worship
along with the new printed works strictly focused on the
believer s piety and religiosity. These private initiatives,
printed in the printing houses from
Gherla,
Satu
Mare,
Baia Mare,
Sibiu,
are
collections of different prayers,
translations from the Roman-Catholic devotional
literature stemming from the community specific of the
Byzantine devotional prayers, where the celebration was
made in the church according to the holidays of the
calendar of the church, focusing on private prayer.
Generically named Prayer Book, they addressed not only
to young pupils but also to believers, the aim being the
cultivation of virtues and, therefore, the implementation
of an exemplary morality in every parish. By increasing
the number of readers, as a consequence of the literacy
process, these piety books will help increase the
religiousness among the believers, complementing the
Byzantine traditional specific of the Romanian Greek-
Catholics.

Greek Catholic Diocesan Library of
Oradea
(1948-1950).
The history of the Romanian ecclesiastic institutions can
not be made without considering the history of the
ecclesiastic libraries that, for centuries, represented the
main enlightenment source of the clerics who served the
evangelic ideal and the national one. The present study

Episcopacy of
Oradea
kept until
1948
in the episcopal
palace, with a history that is complicated enough, due to
its division, during
1949-1950,
between different
institutions protected by the communist authorities. The
first chapter presents a short history of its collections
from the foundation of the Episcopacy
(1777)
till the
years after the Second World War and the second one
presents, with documentary annexes, the division of the
library between the Ministry of Cults, Orthodox
Episcopacy of
Oradea
and the Academy Library, Branch
Cluj.
