AL Friedland was established on 8th of September 1944. 714 prisoners
went through the camp during the eight months of its existence. They were
Jews brought from the Auschwitz concentration camp, mainly from the
Łódź ghetto, and from Theresienstadt, as well as 199 prisoners who were
left in this camp by evacuation columns from different subcamps of the
concentration camp Gross-Rosen as they passed by.
121 prisoners died. They were buried on the hill behind the municipal
cemetery in Friedland. It was possible to establish the names of 118 dead
prisoners, and three people were only marked with numbers and for whom
there are no personal details, two of which were obviously not prisoners
of the Gross-Rosen camps complex.
The majority of prisoners (436) worked manufacturing propellers in the
VDM factory (Vereinigte Deutsche Metallwerke, Hamburg.) They were
employed directly in the production sector and their task was to profile the
propellers. 45 prisoners worked in the carpenter s shop (the company Fritz
Schuber.) Some of the prisoners, before they were directed to work in the
factory, were employed excavating large caverns inside of a local hill.
The purpose of these caverns remains unknown.
On 9th of May 1945, Soviet soldiers entered AL Friedland, freeing the
prisoners. There were still 488 prisoners in the camp.
The historian who is involved in research about AL Friedland, has
access to relatively rich sources. Most of all, (and this is a rarity as for the
subcamps of the concentration camp Gross-Rosen), he has residual docu-
ments issued by the camp office. Additionally, he has testimonies and
memoirs of the survivors that were collected in different circumstances,
and times- between 1945, and 2012.
This summary does not, of course, tell everything about the Friedland
camp. Without a doubt, there may still be survivors of this camp whom
I have not contacted yet, and their testimonies would definitely supple-

ment the material I presented here. Archives of the company Vereingte
Deutsche Metallwerke should also be checked. Perhaps there is still infor-
mation about prisoners who were employed in Mieroszów. The matter of the
caverns is yet another that should be explained; what was their exact loca-
tion, and purpose.
