SUMMARY
I he publication includes memories of 1844-1871 regarding, inter alia, the January Ris¬
ing of
1863,
the Warsaw Main School and the life of Polish intelligentsia in the second half
I of the 19th century in the Kingdom of Poland.
Andrzej Roch Świętochowski
(the author) was
born
16
August
1844
in
Sławków,
where his father
-
Ignacy,
an insurgent of
1831 -
served as the con¬
ductor of the second class hard roads on the stretch of
Olkuska
road. In
1845
Ignacy Świętochowski
was moved to the same position in
Białogon
near
Kielce.
Due to the family s difficult financial situ¬
ation and the housing conditions, far from favourable,
Andrzej,
then the youngest son, spent five years
with his
Kluszczyński
grandparents in
Niesułowice.
He was placed in their care when he was

year
old. He returned to his father and family in
Sławków
in
1850,
after the death of his mother, Emilia,
née
Kluszczyńska, Nielepiec
by her first marriage.
He began his education in an elementary school in
Niesułowice
and continued in
Dąbrowa
Górnicza,
where he stayed for merely one year, as the family could not afford the tuition.
Ignacy
Świętochowski,
whose dream was for all of his children to gain at least some form of basic educa¬
tion, decided to prepare his two sons
-
the elder Stefan and the younger
Andrzej
(the oldest son,
Tadeusz,
already had a certificate of graduating from the fourth grade)
-
for exams to the second
grade of the Secondary Science School in
Kielce.
In
1855
Andrzej Świętochowski
passed the entry test
to the second grade. Again, due to the shortage of money, which made it impossible for the family to
cover the school fees, he had to stop studying and spent the school year of
1856/1857
at home, work¬
ing on the school curriculum on his own. He graduated from the
Kielce
Secondary School in
1861
top
of the list. His father could not even consider any further education of his son.
In the years
1861-1863
he stayed with his brother
Tadeusz
in
Miechów
and worked with him, first
with the engineer
Jakub Wysocki
-
the manager of hard roads in the southern part of the then prov¬
ince of
Radom,
then with
Józef Chełmiński
-
the county engineer. Between these employments he
also tried his hand as a private tutor, and this experience had a profound effect on his later life.
When the Rising broke out in
1863
Andrzej Świętochowski
was in
Miechów
and witnessed the
battles of rebels under the leadership of Apolinary Kurowski and the bloody retaliation of the Rus¬
sians. Banished from
Miechów
along with its other residents,
Świętochowski
accepted the hospitality
of
Michał Katarzyński,
the father in law of his brother
Tadeusz
and the then mayor of the
Giebułtów
commune, and spent several weeks in
Książ Mały.
Having survived the Russian attack on
Giebułtów
thanks to a fortunate coincidence, he went to
Kraków.
His dreams of joining the troops of Langiewicz
collapsed into rubble as his closer encounter with some of the insurgents in Krakow brought bitter¬
ness and disappointment. In
Kraków,
in April and May of
1863,
he worked as an apothecary appren¬
tice in the pharmacy of
Piotr Krokiewicz
and in the office of the Society of Mutual Insurance in June.
He then got a job as a tutor and supervisor in the pension house of
Dobrzçcki
at
Jagiellońska
street.
From September
1863
to mid-March
1864
he attended the lectures of
Józef
Majer
and
Józef
Kremer
at the Jagiellonian University as an unenrolled student. At the end of March
1863,
in accordance with
the recommendation of the Austrian authorities acting under the influence of the Russians, he had

Kraków
and return to the Kingdom of Poland. From April to August
1863
he stayed with his
brother
Tadeusz
in
Olkusz,
helping him with office work and preparing two sons of local officials
for the third grade of secondary school. He spent his free time on intensive reading and thinking
about how to realize his secret dream and enroll in the Warsaw Main School, established in
1862.
His
true friendship with
Michał Katarzyński
made this dream possible. With his financial support,
An¬
drzej Roch Świętochowski
came to Warsaw in September
1864
and in October, after passing the ex¬
ams, he became a first year student at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics. His renewed friend¬
ship with Adolf
Dygasiński
meant that under his influence he changed the faculty to Philology and
History in
1865,
where he graduated in
1869.
After studying for two years until the end of June
1871,
he worked as a private tutor of the two oldest sons of Jan and Anna
(Chościak-Popiel)
Orsetti
-
the
owners of
Ujazd.
During this visit he met
Paweł Popiel
and his family. Thanks to this acquaintance,
and particularly thanks to the contacts with
Jadwiga Chościak-Popiel,
later the wife of Count
Feliks
Rostworowski, he became a great lover of Italian art, as well as a connoisseur, as his

published as early as in
1875,
clearly shows.
After returning to Warsaw on

August
1871,
he started working at the Warsaw Fire Insurance
Company and simultaneously taught geography of the world and of the former Poland in private
schools for girls and boys. On
25
October
1871
he married Helena
Bernhardt -
the daughter of
a famous Warsaw physician Adolf
Bernhardt.
They had five children, four sons
-
Jan, Bolesław,
Brunon, Tomasz
-
and one daughter,
Zona.
After three years of work in the Warsaw Fire Insurance
Company he became the head of the department of insurance, and after
1885
he was nominated the
permanent representative of the Company at the sessions of the Convention and chaired the meet¬
ings of the Warsaw Committee throughout its existence, In January
1900
Świętochowski
took over
the duties of the temporary Deputy Managing Director,
Konstanty Górski,
and after two years he
became a full manager and a member of the Directorate from
1906.
On
19
October
1918,
due to his
failing health, he handed in his resignation at the meeting of the Managing Council and retired, but
remained a member of the Council. He died on
18
December
1928
at the age of
84
and was buried in
the family grave in the Warsaw
Powązki
Cemetery.
Gifted with literary abilities he published poems in the Warsaw newspapers and magazines, such
as

Tygodnik Ilustrowany
[Weekly Illustrated], his unpublished manu¬
scripts have also survived. They include translations of the dramatic poems by

[The Great Geographical Atlas of the World]. From
1877
he published his reports
on the social and economic issues of Warsaw in the %xaj [Our Country] magazine. During his long
life he travelled extensively throughout Germany, Austria and Italy.
