Why has Sierra Leone's diamond trade not benefitted the
country, but instead restricted its economic growth and
perpetuated its reliance on international aid?
•
Is the exploitation of diamonds by foreign interests just
another form of
neo-coloniaïist prédation?
•
How is it that Sierra Leone's diamonds have been used to
finance criminal networks and wars far beyond its borders,
and even
al
-Qaeda?
Diamonds have played an important role in the political economy of
Sierra Leone, as was highlighted by the use of 'conflict' or 'blood'
diamonds in the decade-long civil war. Yet their role is larger than
this. Exploited by global business interests, Sierra Leone's diamonds
have also been used by groups extending beyond the borders of
West Africa: global criminal networks in the US and Russia,
international terror groups and 'legitimate'transnational companies,
as well as to finance factions in Lebanon's civil war. The marginal-
ization and exclusion of Sierra Leone mean that it and other such
resource-rich nations remain reliant on aid. This study will be of
importance not only for scholars of African studies, but for
NGOs
and
those with a wider interest in development.
