In the early eighteenth century the great pirate captains,
including Blackbeard and Black Sam Bellamy, joined forces.
Together they established a pirate republic in the Bahamas
-
a crude
but distinctive democracy, in which indentured servants were free,
blacks and runaway slaves were equal and leaders were elected.
For a brief, glorious period they were enormously successful. They cut
off trade routes, sacked slave ships, and severed Europe from its New
World, shaking the very foundations of imperialism. But they were
ultimately overcome by their arch-nemesis, Captain Woodes Rogers

a merchant fleet owner and former privateer

and the brief
but glorious republic came to an end.
