memories of growing up in Liberia, it follows her to Hamburg, Germany, where she pursued an
education and forged friendships, but also experienced the racism, terror, and nationalistic fervor

traveled to the United States, where she furthered her studies, embracing her newfound freedom
even as she observed deteriorating conditions in the segregated American South in the early years

Vivian Seton is the daughter of
Fatima
Massaquoi. She received her
Abitur
from the
Freie
Waldorf
Schule,
Germany, an LL.B from the University of Liberia, and an M.Sc from Georgetown s School of
Languages and Linguistics

USA. She has taught at Montgomery College, USA, Catholic University,
USA, anà
the University of Liberia.
Konrad
Tuchscherer is Associate Professor of History and Director of
Africana
Studies at St. John s
University, New York, USA. He is a specialist in the history of written traditions in Africa and his
work has appeared in major journals and featured in reports by the BBC and NPR. Tuchscherer
contributed to the Smithsonian s groundbreaking exhibition
ort
African scripts and wrote a chapter
in the resulting book, inscribing Meaning
(2007).
Arthur Abraham is Professor of History and Eminent Scholar at Virginia State University, USA, and
formerly Professor of African Studies and Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences at Fourah Bay College,
Sierra Leone, and the University of Sierra Leone. He is the leading historian of Sierra Leone and has
an extensive publication record. His most famous work is
