Grain who died during a concert in
Gdańsk
in January
1756
was known as a composer of vocal-instrumental church music. All his sur¬
viving scores of this character are kept at the
Gdańsk
Library collection of the
Polish Academy of Sciences. However, the three harpsichord concertos, in
E
minor,

F
minor, are in the
Staatsbibliothek zu
Berlin
Preußischer
Kulturbesitz,
Mendelssohn
Archiv,
catalogue number
Mus. ms. 5270/1-3.
Their
first recorded rendition by the author of the publication and accompanying
musicians constitutes an integral part of this publication.
Part One is devoted to the life of the composer. So far little is known about his
early years which he spent in Hamburg and studied under
Georg Philipp
Te-
lemann.
Better known are his later years, in
Elbląg
and
Gdańsk,
as a lot of sur¬
viving information deal with his professional activities and are valuable in the
context of his work. Part Two of the publication discusses structure and selec¬
ted performance practice problems encountered in the three recorded harpsi¬
chord concertos. It is preceded by information about other known composi¬
tions by
Johann
Jeremias
du
Grain as well as about the evolution of the form
of a solo concerto to locate
du
Grain s concertos in a historical and style con¬
text. Due to the absence of the composers own performace instructions the
issues concerning interpretation presented in this publication are based on lite¬
rature by other composers,
du
Grain s contemporaries.
The compositions under discussion are proof enough of
du
Grains proficiency
in baroque vocal-instrumental forms as well as in the purely instrumental ones,
for example, the three harpsichord concertos marked by many elements of a new
style. The quoted facts from his life help understand the factors which influen¬
ced the evolution of his individual music idiom. Among the most important were
his contacts with G.P. Telemann in Hamburg which probably encouraged him
to undertake later on organizational efforts in
Gdańsk
where he gave the first pu¬
blic concerts. Another noteworthy event that could stimulate
du
Grains compo¬
ser skills was the work on fragments of an opera by G.E Haendel which together
with added recitatives composed by
du
Grain made up a pasticcio designed to
mark the 500-years anniversary of the town of
Elbląg
in the year
1737.
