A large literature on conflict and violence in Africa now exists, but there is very tittle that examines
the linkages between development strategy and practice and violence. This volume is an important
addition to current debates about Africa.

he Economic Roots of Conflict and Cooperation in Africa explores how the development strategies
of African nations shape the nature and dynamics of inter-group violence. The overview chapter
assesses development doctrines, patterns of development, and levels and nature of violence in both
North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa. Focusing on

countries, the case-study contributions explore
the immediate and long-term impacts of development initiatives on reducing or increasing inter-group
conflict and violence. They demonstrate the importance of evolving identities as economic roles and

College, USA. He also directs the Pacific Basin Research Center at

University of America, USA. He
has written six books on the politics and economics of development.
Natalia Mirovitskaya is Senior Researcher and Lecturing Fellow at the Duke Center for International
Development, USA. She has published on sustainable development, environmental security, and
peacebuilding and has taught in several countries. With William
Ascher,
she has also co-edited other
books published in the Politics, Economics, and inclusive Development series: Economic Development
Strategies and the Evotution of Violence in Latin America
