The Arab uprisings that began in
2011
have drawn attention to factors of identity that are
crucial to assessing and reassessing the ways that states form, stay together, and react
to the forces of globalization. For different states in the
MENA
region, these factors have
had different implications and consequences which stem from the politics of identity and
the historical and political processes individual states have faced in their development. This
volume examines these factors in terms of religion, ethnicity, and other variables to illustrate
their importance in state formation and the concrete and intangible changes that have taken
place in the region. It focuses on the historical, political, economic, and social factors at work,
especially as they take shape within the context of globalization. Case studies examine diverse
states such as Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain. The contributors take the view that
identity is a dynamic and changing factor in the process of state
formation.
Kenneth Christie is Professor of Political Science and Program Head of the Masters in Arts in
Human Security and Peacebuilding at Royal Roads University, Canada. In the last
25
years, he
has taught and conducted research at universities in the United States, Singapore, South Africa,
Norway, and the United Arab Emirates, concentrating on human rights, security, identity and
religion, and globalization. His recent publications include America s War on Terrorism: The
Revival of the Nation-State Versus Universal Human Rights
(2008)
and US National identity and
Foreign Policy in the 21st Century
(2008).
Mohammad
Masad
is Assistant Professor in the Department of Humanities and Social
Sciences at Zayed University, United Arab Emirates. His research interests include Islamic
history, the Middle East, Medieval divination, Mediterranean cultures and societies, Palestine,
Dubai, and the United Arab Emirates. He is recipient of the Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Research
Abroad Fellowship.
