THE END OF LIFE:
EUTHANASIA AND MORALITY
JAMES RACHELS
Killing people is, in general, wrong. But why is it wrong,
and when may exceptions be made?
Euthanasia is a sensitive subject. It arouses fear in some
people, while others believe it is an act of humanity
and compassion.
James Rachels examines the ideas and assumptions
behind the rule against killing. He argues against the
traditional view that the killing of the innocent is always
wrong, and presents an alternative view based on the
belief that there is a profound difference between having
a life and merely being alive.
This is a book for anyone who cares about the way we
treat other human beings; for anyone who has read about
cases like Karen Quinlan and wondered what ought to be
done; for anyone who has stopped to consider what we
really mean by respect for human life.
James Rachels is Professor of Philosophy in the
University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is editor of
Moral Problems and Understanding Moral Philosophy
and author of many articles on ethics, philosophy,
and religion. |
