Summary
The hitherto research on the history of Polish Protestantism concerns
primarily the interwar period and focuses in its findings on the territory
of today s Poland. Themes relating to the Polish Protestantism after
1945
are just being undertaken by historians. As yet, the fates of the Polish
Evangelic emigration in North America and Western Europe, as well as
in other parts of the world, have not been described. In that respect, the
monograph presented below fills the gap in the native historiography.
The chronological framework of the dissertation is broad. It begins at
the turn of the 19th and the 20th centuries and terminates in the early
21st century. That long period of time lets us trace the processes de¬
scribed at a broader angle in accordance with the rule
longue durée.
The
fates of the
Evangelies
in emigration have been presented against broader
background of political changes occurring in Poland and Europe in the
period of interest, that is nearly
100
years.
The top Protestant emigration activists were the influential people
of the Polish London. They were:
bp Władysław Fierla

the bishop of
the Polish Evangelic-Augsburg Church abroad, Pawet Byrtus, Jan Raabe,
Adam
Gaś,
Alfred
Palmi,
Halina
Martin,
Wiktor
Martin,
Walerian Kwiat-
kowski. The long-term priest of the Polish circles, vicar Alfred Bieta once
said that the London parish was composed of intelligentsia and people
connected with London government .
The evangelic party while at emigration initiated plenty of celebrations
related to the history of the Republic. It was both noticed and appreciated
in the Polish political circles. The effect was: e.g. inviting bishop Fierla
to organize by the authorities and Polish organizations in emigration the
millennium celebrations on White City. They were attended by almost

thousand people. The evangelic party also organized its own part
within the celebrations the Millennium of the Christian Poland. Bishop

Anders. It was influenced by the fact
that the Anders family were of Lutheran creed. Only
Władysław
Anders
himself converted himself into Catholicism.
Life directed Polish
Evangelies
to various continents. Polish parishes
after
1945
were established in Canada (Toronto), the USA (Detroit, New
York), Australia (Adelaide), France (Paris), the GFR
(Düsseldorf,
Essen).
In Stockholm in
1975
there was the Association of the Polish
Evangelies
in Sweden established. It existed until
1978
when it was replaced with the
Polish Evangelic Institute. Its founder was an emigrant from Poland engi¬
neer Jan Siostzronek who edited the paper

I Dialog . The institute
had its branches in Germany. It was managed by
Kazimierz Sławiński
from
Immenhausen.
The centre of Polish Lutheranism in emigration was still Great Brit¬
ain. There, until
1995,
resided Bishop
Władysław Fierla
-
the top Polish
Lutheran activist in emigration. He was known in the structures of the
world Protestantism, in the World Lutheran Federation, and closely co¬
operating with the conservative Church of Missouri Synod. He was also
the editor of the
Poseł Ewangelicki
—
the intermediary between
evan¬
gelies
all over the world.
London was also the site of the Polish Evangelical-reformed church
abroad, which grouped scarce Polish Calvin emigration. Its main activists
were priest Roman Mazierski, and after his premature death the civilians:
Olgierd Cumft, Stanisław
Karszo-Siedlecki, Irena
and
Andrzej Sągajłło.
The press organ of the church was the paper

There also was a secular organization functioning In emigration band¬
ing Polish
evangelies
of both Lutheran and
Calvinist
confessions. It was
the Polish Evangelic Association established in
1943
in London.
In the late 40s and mid-50s there was a view dominating in the spheres
of the Polish
protestant
emigration, common among all of it, about the
transience of the stay abroad. Polish
protestants
also lived in illusion that the communist system in Poland
would collapse soon.
After
1956
they got resigned to the fact that it would not happen in
the foreseeable future and focused all the organizational efforts on
sur-

viving and not losing their Polish-evangelic tradition. The majority of the
emigrants scattered all over the world supported, within their capabil¬
ities, the Polish Evangelic-Augsburg Church abroad financially through
donating church contributions.
The native country was not forgotten either. They subscribed evangelic
press published in Poland. In the religious work they used the Agenda
(the sequence of the service). In the emigration

there
was information concerning the events in the Polish Evangelic-Augsburg
Church in Poland. The local priests also published in the monthly.

Ewangelicki
often disclosed information not available in the country. It
happened in the case of Warsaw Lutheran church in
Małachowski
square
taken by the communist authorities in
1951
(it was returned after the
case was publicized in the world in the autumn of
1956).
Other forms of aid for Lutheran believers in Poland were food, clothes
and medication packages. For the third ones the Polish Evangelic-Augs¬
burg Church abroad received donations from the World Lutheran Feder¬
ation as well as from the Lutheran Church of Missouri Synod.
The general attitude of the Polish Evangelic-Augsburg Church abroad
to the Evangelic-Augsburg Church in the country was defined by using
the term home by the church dignitaries.
Polish parishes or the associations of Polish believers all the time exist
in the territory of Great Britain, Canada, the GFR and Australia. They
yet belong to several local church structures and constantly lose their
once-Polish character. Slowly, naturally, in connection with generation
change an slight Diaspora character, they blend into the Anglo-Saxon
world around. They have remained, though, as English collections faithful
to conservative Lutheranism. One of their priests, the above mentioned
Artur
Borkenhagen,
defending the conservative character of Lutheran¬
ism, the example of which was the activity of the Church of Missouri
Synod, declared in the 50s There are things in our world which never
grow old. The Christian Gospel is not changeable just like Christ him¬
self, yesterday, today and forever . Such a motto, no doubt, accompanied
the representatives of the Polish
protestant
emigration in the USA and
Canada. There were followed by the next emigrant
evangelies
left by the

history of the 20th century in Great Britain, Australia and other places of
the globe.
Despite those natural assimilation phenomena, the society of the Pol¬
ish
evangelies
abroad still functions. Those left abroad by the war and the
younger, driven by economic factors, meet for services and meetings in
the parishes scattered all over the world. The inflow of the
lat
group may
give hope for further lasting of the administrative structures of the Polish
emigration. It is a tiny part, but as can be seen from the events described
above, also co-creating the beautiful page of the history
ofthat
Polish
Nation living, not of their own choice, out of the country.
