Spaces of the Library. The Symbolic, Physical
and Social Presence of the Institution
The theme of the book is the library. It is described and analyzed in the
cultural and social context. The Author concluded that the library has cle¬
ar physical and functional factors, which include: the stock, organizational
structure, management style of the organization and staff. However, the Au¬
thor saw a second component of the library: the cultural superstructure, the
so-called spirit, or aura of the library which built its image and identity.
Thus, the library is a sign that is placed in a world of symbolism
-
the culture
of man. It is this culture, but also the social background of the institutions
were analyzed in this book. Both resources: matter and spirit, life and cul¬
ture, interpenetrate and condition their existence. Analysis of one of them
involves getting to the other. The essence lies in the proportions and causa¬
lity. The Author assumed that this spirit means the symbolic culture of the
library, it creates an everyday routine. Accepted as a fundamental thesis that
in order to fully operate, the library needs a growing layer of symbolic and
cultural items. Hence the assumption of near harmony between the organi¬
zation of a library and its cultural values.
In recent years, the functions and tasks of the libraries are changing.
Does this mean that the spirit of the library, also is changing? The book is
an attempt at a partial answer to this question. Therefore the question which
the Author was trying to answer is: Is there a universal idea of the library?
The solution to this problem was to condition the paradigm of this book,

which is neither modernist (and even more so postmodern, or traditionalist)
.
It is the evidence of behavior in the range of the ideological foundations
of ancient libraries in the modern mercantile environment. The library is
seen here so multidimensional, systemic and structural, which were used
in a sociological approach, elements of organization theory, praxeology, but
also anthropology, semiotics and

book science.
The symbolism of the library is born in the process of communicating
with homo legens, and also have homo ludens. The Author assumed that
the library creates messages. Analysis models of the communication process
in which the visible areas are characteristic of non-profit institutions such
as libraries, that indicates that these institutions generate their own codes,
and so the seeds of languages. The feelings of the public at large is that
the institution of the message library
-
not of men hidden behind the
desks, who is the organizer. The customer experience and his opinions
about library architecture, and design influences of the building, its location
in the city, and a lot of details that apparently seem to be irrelevant. The
location and appearance of the entrance to the library, its color, and shape
of individual rooms are among the many artifacts that make up the library
language, and when the Author wrote many languages he meant libraries
from the early 21st century which differ from former institutions. You can
use the atmosphere, to feel the story, as

stopped in time. You can also
use libraries that are hyper-modern centers that provide information in its
broadest sense. You can also spend free time in the library, because people
feel good in it. They feel at home. In this sense, the library is a so-called
third place
-
a space where people meet to rest, chat, drink coffee, and
sometimes read interesting books or borrow them to take home. Of course,
these libraries offer not only books, but also electronic documents produced
in different forms and for different purposes. Libraries which we describe
as third place are modern social and democratic spaces which constantly
organizes events. Some of them are developed by the users themselves. Thus
posed the Author assumes the existence of a universal concept of a library
-
a mark or sign of all the libraries and library systems is more difficult to
verify. Verification of dynamic transformations hinder these institutions in
an era of information society. The overview of libraries from around the
world indicates the two reflections. The first shows that resemble the library
regardless of cultural background and the society for whom they work. The

second reflection, seemingly contrary to earlier, indicates the existence
of two main ideas of libraries. According to the first, a library is a place
of magical, mysterious, showing an insignificant person as an individual
against the sacrum ( spirit ) of the library. According to the second idea, the
library is a space that belongs to a community of people living side by side.
This is the place where they are hosted. This is the usual place, so you can
get some kind of service.
It should finally be answered, if so diverse a library can create its own
language? Based on a phenomenological basis for the analysis shows
instead that it boils down to personal experience language to the form of
individual libraries. Language built on the experiences of individual users
on an individual level. The external (objective) and internal (subjective)
messages issued by the library let you see it in different ways. It is in this
diversity lies the strength and future of libraries, even it is for
20-30
year
olds it will be called a idea store, media center, learning center etc.
Spirit of the library will continue to be present in them.

widened the knowledge of little-known aspects of the libraries in Poland,
Europe and worldwide, including the scientific exploration of the history
of libraries from ancient times to today. In the felicitous choice of research
topic, scope and extent of chronological and geographical study undertaken
see the main value of the book, which has not been seen before.
