History of
Gąbin
and the surrounding area
Summary
Gąbin
is one of the oldest cities of Mazovia. Already in the beginning of
the Polish state a trade settlement near an important trade route from
Lviv to Torun and the Baltic Sea was there. The privilege of Duke
Konrad
I of Mazovia from
1215,
described
Gąbin
as ancient monarch property.
Then it was the seat of the deanery, there was a St. Trinity church, which
has survived until the end of the seventeenth century.
Gąbin
received its city rights probably in
1322,
the Duke Ziemowit V
confirmed them in
1437,
(Gąbin
has already had its city council in
1425).
In
1462,
it became a royal town and its residents received confirmation of
all existing rights and privileges from King
Kazimierz Jagiellończyk.
The
Gentry of the created county had the right to choose representatives for
the councils, which took place near
Gąbin.
The pupils graduating from the
Gabin s catholic school could be later seen among students of the Cracow
Academy.
In the sixteenth century,
Gąbin
was an important center of craft pro¬
duction in the western Mazovia. Local craftsmen have obtained numerous
privileges from the rulers of the Republic. Gabin s resilient development,
well-known for its production of cloth, encouraged the Jewish population
to settle there.
Gąbin
was one of the
10
cities of Mazovia, which already in
1507,
had a Jewish community. The official privilege of allowing Jews to
settle in
Gąbin
was released in
1578
by Stefan
Batory.
Soon they acquired
the right to sell alcoholic beverages.
An important factor for
Gąbin
was also the trade. Gabin s merchants got
rich thanks to the trade of grain floated on Vistula to Gdansk. Local Jews
also engaged in cattle trade. The number ofje-ws in
Gąbin
increased steadi¬
ly. Thanks to the efforts of the Jewish community in
1710,
the building of
a synagogue in
Gąbin
was completed
-
one of the most beautiful buildings
of this kind on the Polish lands. A famous Jewish scholar Abraham
Abele
Halevi Ben Hayyim was born in
Gąbin.

(Summary
The successful development of
Gąbin
was interrupted by fires, epi¬
demics and wars rolling through Western Mazovia. The greatest damage to
the city -was a result of years of the Swedish flood in the middle of the
eighteenth century, numerous marches of enemy troops, but also of their
own.
Gąbin
residents were present in the fight for the rights of Polish cities
during the Great Seym activity. Their representatives were in the delega¬
tion of
13
royal cities, participating in the famous black procession in
Warsaw on December
2, 1789.
The reforms of the Gentry Republic, how¬
ever, were late and in
1793,
as a result of the second partition of Poland,
Gąbin
was under Prussian rule.
Gąbin
and its area residents showed a patriotic attitude during the strug¬
gle for independence. They actively participated in the events of the
Kosciuszko
Insurrection
(1794-1795),
the Napoleonic Wars
(1806-1813),
the November
(1830-1831)
and January Uprising
(1863-1864).
The city of
Gąbin,
lying on an important military route, did not miss any of the wars
of national liberation character. Large number of forests favored Guerrilla
activities in the area of
??Gąbin.
The population of
Gąbin
and the sur¬
rounding area provided the fighting Polish troops assistance. They also suf¬
fered the consequences by paying high contributions, imposed by the par¬
titioning powers. Many residents of
Gąbin
were sentenced to death, impris¬
onment, or Siberian hard labor for helping the insurgents.
Numerous wars in the nineteenth century had a devastating impact on
the economic development of
Gąbin.
In spite of that fact, the city had sys¬
tematically developed. In the period of Grand Duchy of Warsaw-
Gąbin
-was
the capital of the
Gostynin
district. In the period of Kingdom of Poland,
one of the
28
existing post offices was established here.
Gąbin
was also
a garrison town. However, the most important factor of establishmen of
Gąbin
was the creation of a clothing settlement in
1822.
The settlers who
came from Prussia were mainly prepared for the production of cloth for the
army. Much of the production of cloth was also exported to Russia. As an
initiative of the Polish Kingdom, the aesthetic appearance of streets and
houses was ensured in
Gąbin
as well as the fire protection. In
1826
a town
hall made of brick was constructed, which is now located at the Old
Market.
The inflow of German settlers led to the creation of Lutheran parish in
Gąbin.
In
1830,
the Protestant church was built. It was also attended by
many German colonists living in Polish villages by the Vistula River. It is
also worth mentioning that Mennonites had their headquarters by the
Vistula River, especially many living in the village
Wymyśle Niemieckie.
ôummary
867
The local people of Jewish faith, mainly engaged in trade and crafts gave
impetus for the economic development of
Gąbin.
In
1857, 1,642
Poles,
1,897
Jews and
388
Germans lived in
Gąbin.
Local Poles mainly worked in
craft and agriculture. The main source of income for
Gąbin
residents of
German nationality
-
was usually crafts and small industry.
After the affranchisement decree of
1864
and the establishment of large
farms, the local and regional market of
Gąbin
gained importance. Gabin s
merchants and craftsmen made ??their way to fairs and markets in neigh¬
bouring cities with their goods;
Gostynin,
Plock,
Łowicz, Kutno, Sochaczew
Żychlin.
Gabin s cobblers, potters and carpenters, specialising in the pro¬
duction of painted chests, for the rural population to store clothes and
linen for Christmas, were famous in Mazovia.
In the years
1865-1914
Gąbin
was one of the major cities of Western
Mazovia. In
18б5
its population reached
4,110
residents and in terms of the
number of people it outnumbered, among others, the ??district city
—
Gostynin
(3124
inhabitants).
Gąbin
exceeded the number of five thousand
in
1872,
and
6
thousand in
1890,
half of the population was Jewish pop¬
ulation, about
10% —
the population of German nationality. Occasionally,
there have been some animosity and strife between the nations, especial¬
ly between the Polish and Jewish people, mainly on economic back¬
ground.
In the second half of the nineteenth century,
Gąbin
was one of the rich¬
est cities in the province of Warsaw and the Polish Kingdom, taken into
account its income and expenditures per one city resident. The main
source of income -was the sale of trees from urban forests. City managed
significant funding, but could not utilize it properly because it lacked gov¬
ernment and was restrained by decisions of tsarist authorities, which result¬
ed in plans for necessary municipal investments being cancelled or only
partially implemented.
The Volunteer Fire Department, founded with the approval of the tsarist
government in
1897,
played an important role in the socio-political and cul¬
tural life of
Gąbin.
The community of
Gąbin
and the surrounding areas
actively participated in the events of the Revolution in
1905—1907,
demand¬
ing introduction of the Polish language to schools and offices. It is also
here where a strike of primary school students took place. Very active
underground Fighting Organization of the Polish Socialist Party, organised
attacks on particularly hated tsarist officials. Farm workers striked on sur¬
rounding farms. Young Jews with radical views joined the Bund and the
Social Democracy of the Polish Kingdom and Lithuania. One of the posi¬
tive consequences of the events of
1905-1907
was the agreement of the
868
âummary
Russian authorities to create a 4-class urban school in
Gąbin.
Once the
Catholic wooden church burnt in
1913,
a construction of a nev/ church has
started.
A new chapter in the history of
Gąbin
was begun by the outbreak of
WWI. In
1914-1915
fierce fighting between the Russian and German armies
took place around
Gąbin.
After the withdrawal of Russian troops from the
city, the German occupation began. To gain the Poles trust, teaching in
Polish was restored in schools. At the same time the policy of the occupa¬
tion authorities was wasteful, expressed by, among others, mass export of
urban forest trees. In
1916,
a structure of the Polish Military Organization
(POW) was formed in
Gąbin.
On November
11,
the day of regaining inde¬
pendence by the Polish state, members of the POW proceeded to disarm
the German soldiers stationed in
Gąbin.
The evidence of the involvement of residents of
Gąbin
and surrounding
areas and socio-political life of the Second Republic was its participation in
the elections to the Legislative
Sejm in 1919.
During the Bolshevik invasion
of
1920,
the Polish Army reported many volunteers from Gabin s area. Its
residents also supported the Council of National Defense and the Polish
troops fighting the invaders. They were also members of a number of para¬
military organisations, such as Legionnaires Association, the Polish Military
Organization, Rifle Association, one of whose tasks was reached after
Jozef
Pilsudski regained power in May
1926 —
the spread of Marshal worship.
Great political influence among the inhabitants of
Gąbin
was the Polish
Socialist Party and among the rural population surrounding
Gąbin
—
the
Peasant Party.
The Zionist organisations led a vigorous political activity among the
Jews in
Gąbin.
A religious-zionist party Mizrachi whose creators were
already in
1916:
Rabbi Yehuda
Leib
Goldsmith and his brother Mordechai
Jon Goldsmith
—
rabbi of
Plock,
was influential in
Gąbin.
In the second half
of the 30s of the twentieth century, among the German population living
in villages by the Vistula river, activities of the Nazi ideology have arisen.
In Reborned Poland
Gąbin
was one of the cities in the
Gostynin
coun¬
ty and the province of Warsaw. After
20
years since regaining indepen¬
dence
Gąbin
had over
7
thousand inhabitants, of which about
2,5
thousand
were Jews, and about five hundred Germans.
Although the Great Depression,
Gąbin
was the largest center of crafts in
the
Gostynin
county. In
1932,
more than
500
workshops were recorded in
Gąbin,
including as many as
180
shoemaker s and
113
sewing workshops.
The Fireman s House, built in

Summary

Składkowskiego,
became an important cultural institution. Catholic associ¬
ations were very active.
Gąbin
issued a newspaper called Parish Posts of
Gąbin.
A great achievement was to build a new, impressive building of
the parish church. Its consecration took place in
1934.
Due to the excellent climate, a complex of pine forests and picturesque
lakes,
Gąbin
had a chance to become a health resort. These plans were
ruined by the outbreak of World War II.
During the September Campaign of
1939,
the area of
Gąbin
was in the
zone of the Battle of
Bzura.
Especially fierce fighting took place in
Dobrzykow, where more than
300
Polish soldiers were killed. As a result
of bombing by German planes part of
Gąbin
was destroyed.
On September
17, 1939,
the Nazi occupation, characterized by a band
of terrible repression of its people began in
Gąbin.
It particularly affected
the Jewish population. A historic synagogue was burnt. In
1941,
a ghetto
for Jews was created in
Gąbin,
who were systematically deported to labour
camps. The local
Judenrat
tried to help the starving Jews, they also risked
their lives to help the Poles living in
Gąbin.
Liquidation of the ghetto in
Gąbin
took place in the middle of April
1942.
Almost
2
thousand Jews were deported to Nazi extermination camp
at
Chełmno
on the
Ner,
where they met their bestial death.
The situation of the Polish population was not much better. Many socio¬
political activists were deported to concentration camps, from -which they
never returned. On June
15, 1941, 10
Poles were executed in
Gąbin.
Parson
Fr.
Władysław
Turowski s life was ended in an extermination camp. All
churches in the area of
Gąbin
were closed. Dismantling of the parish
church in
Gąbin
by the occupant was a great loss.
The response of Gabin s and the surrounding area s people for repres¬
sion by the Nazis was a resistance movement. Many people engaged in
underground activity of the
Gąbin
District Army (commander
—
Anthony
Stanczak), in secret teachings, sending packages to prisoners of concentra¬
tion camps. The liberation of the city from Nazi occupation by the Red
Army took place on January
18, 1945.
A nev/ period in the history of Polish and
Gąbin
started
-
Polish People s
Republic period
(1945—1979)-
It was characterized by a total domination of
the political and social life by the communists. In the first years after the
war, a legal opposition against the government of the Polish Workers Party
was the Polish People s Party led by
Stanislaw Mikolajczyk.
There was
a branch of the armed underground (commander
—
Władysław Dubielak),
fighting against impunity of Communists, that many residents of
Gąbin
and
surrounding areas joined.

Summary
As a result of the communist government policy, Gabin s private sector
of production was destroyed: crafts and trade. In the first half of the 50s
during the Polish Stalinism , people of the surrounding villages resisted
the communist authorities, refusing to collectivise agriculture. Polish United
Workers Party
(PZPR)
could proceed to implementation of the Polish route
to socialism after the events of the Polish October
1956.
Despite the difficult political situation, Gabin s residents began to
rebuild the devastated city. In
1946,
after the destruction of the Jewish peo¬
ple and the escape of residents of German nationality, it had only
ЗД00
inhabitants.
Gąbin
became a city in which two secondary schools functioned, High
School and Vocational School, after years turned into the School of
S.
Staszic.
Parishioners of
Gąbin
enjoyed the completion of construction of
a new Roman Catholic Church in
1966.
The largest employer in
Gąbin
was the Municipal Cooperative Peasant
Self-Help , members of which have built various types of production facil¬
ities and shopping services.
Gąbin
residents suffered from a lack of housing. It was difficult because
of the lack of utilities, especially water and sanitation.
At the same time
Gąbin
developed cultural life (an amateur theater
group Breakthrough ), many people attended a cinema Dawn , which
was located in the building of the Volunteer Fire Brigade. The folk Sports
Club the Blue had many successes, was Mazovia The Society of Friends
of the
Gąbin
Area presented a significant contribution to western regional¬
ism. An important factor which enabled the city of
Gąbin
to grow was its
location
